Paradigm Premier 820F v2 walnut (pack of 2)

Eight years after its launch, Paradigm’s Premier series is being thoroughly renewed. The 820F v2 retains the silhouette of the 2018 800F but changes all of its drivers: AL-MAC ceramic tweeter, aluminum-magnesium midrange, 18 cm Carbon-X woofers. This three-way bass-reflex floorstanding speaker benefits from several technologies developed for the higher-positioned Founder and Persona series in the Paradigm range.

A redesign of the Premier drivers

The original Premier range, released in 2018, occupied a unique place at Paradigm, between the entry-level Monitor series and the Prestige and Founder series reserved for the top of the catalog. The v2 preserves this intermediate positioning but thoroughly modernizes the drivers. The Canadian manufacturer builds all of its drivers in-house, in its Mississauga (Ontario) factory: cones, domes, surrounds, voice coils. This vertical integration makes it possible to use components on the 820F v2 that come directly from the development of the Founder and Persona series.

Ceramic tweeter and aluminum-magnesium midrange

The 25 mm tweeter uses an AL-MAC alloy cup, short for aluminum, magnesium, and ceramic. This composite remains both stiffer and lighter than a conventional aluminum dome: it pushes resonances beyond the audible band, which helps maintain a linear response in the high frequencies. In front of the dome, a PPA (Perforated Phase-Aligning) acoustic lens and an OSW (Oblate Spheroid Waveguide) waveguide control lateral dispersion. The goal: widen the listening area without distorting off-axis response.

Below the tweeter, a 152 mm AL-MAG midrange follows the same lightweight alloy approach, with a ventilated 2-inch voice coil. Its own PPA lens ensures continuity of directivity with the tweeter at the delicate crossover point. This area, which covers a large part of the human voice and instrumental range, directly benefits from the choices made for the components of the higher-end ranges.

Two 18 cm Carbon-X drivers for bass

Below the midrange, two 177 mm Carbon-X drivers handle the bass. Their one-piece carbon fiber-based cone aims for great rigidity while remaining lightweight, a useful condition for maintaining speed at the lowest frequencies. The peripheral surround uses the third generation of ART (Active Ridge Technology), a notched surround profile patented by Paradigm. Its role: allow greater linear excursion than a conventional surround, and therefore more sound pressure with less distortion.

In terms of figures, the response reaches 52 Hz at ±3 dB, but Paradigm also announces an extension to 21 Hz measured according to the DIN standard, which takes into account the coupling of the speaker with the room. In music listening as in home theater, this low-end foundation makes the use of a subwoofer optional: the 820F v2 alone covers almost the entire bass range of a stereo or multichannel program.

Reinforced MDF cabinet and decoupled feet

The bass-reflex cabinet is built in MDF, with internal bracing intended to limit unwanted panel vibrations. The port is located at the rear, which requires preserving some clearance from the back wall. At the base, Outrigger Shock-Mount feet widen the floor footprint and mechanically isolate the speaker from wood or tile flooring. Spikes and pads are supplied depending on the type of floor.

Three finishes make up the catalog: lacquered Piano Black, Walnut, and Black Walnut in real wood veneer. With a height of 110 cm, a width of 33 cm, and a depth of 47 cm, the 820F v2 requires sufficient clearance around each speaker. The unit weight of 29.5 kg confirms the solidity of the construction.

Amplification and home theater integration

With a sensitivity of 93 dB and an impedance of 8 ohms, the 820F v2 does not require oversized amplification. Paradigm recommends power between 15 and 250 watts per channel, which covers the majority of integrated amplifiers and preamps paired with power amps. The 180 W power handling leaves a comfortable margin for the dynamic peaks of an action movie or a large orchestral ensemble.

In home theater, the speaker can serve as the main left / right channel in a 5.1, 7.1, or Dolby Atmos system. Paradigm offers a 620C v2 center channel, two bookshelf speakers (220B v2 and 120B v2), and a multifunction 520LCR v2 model in the same range. The shared drivers among these references preserve tonal consistency between channels, an effect that is noticeable in Dolby Atmos tracks where sounds constantly move from one channel to another.
