Waterproof headphones
A waterproof earbud resists water, sweat and dust, as indicated by an IP rating followed by two digits: the first rates protection against solids, the second against liquids. An IPX4 withstands splashes and sweat from a workout, an IPX7 tolerates brief immersion, and an IPX8 is intended for swimming. The distinction matters, because a “sweat-resistant” model is not designed for diving. Fit matters as much as waterproofing during exercise: an ear tip that seals the ear canal, an ear fin or ear hook that keeps the earbud in place while running, and a lightweight design that does not shift with every stride. Connection is most often via Bluetooth, but water blocks radio waves, so swimming requires internal memory that stores files without a phone, sometimes with bone conduction transmission that is better tolerated underwater. After a session, rinsing with fresh water and drying completely before recharging preserve the contacts, which salt and chlorine can damage. Battery life and a protected case also matter for outdoor use. For broader portable use, this type of earbud fits within the range of portable headphones and accessories; phone-free swimming can be prepared with an audiophile music player with built-in memory, and the full selection is available in hi-fi headphones and earphones.
