Top-notch materials, luxurious sound; the only thing is that when they’re closed, you get the feeling of being in a limited, compressed sound space.

The Stellia marks a decisive milestone in Focal’s approach to high-end closed-back headphones. Equipped with a 40 mm pure beryllium M-shaped dome driver, this circumaural model breaks free from the usual limitations of closed-back headphones by delivering sound reproduction that rivals certain open-back models. Its design, entirely crafted in the Saint-Étienne workshops, combines noble materials, patented technologies, and a distinctive design that breaks with the traditional aesthetic codes of the audio sector.
The Stellia stands out with its cognac and mocha finish, which contrasts with the usual sobriety of audiophile headphones. Full-grain leather covers the headband and earcups, developing a unique patina over time. The solid aluminum headband adopts a constant curvature inherited from the Utopia, allowing optimal distribution of the 435 grams. The 20 mm ear pads incorporate a hybrid design: non-perforated leather for sound diffusion on the upper part, acoustic fabric and memory foam for comfort on the lower part.
The perforated stainless steel grilles reveal the leather of the earcups beneath, creating a play of textures reminiscent of luxury leather goods. This layering of noble materials reflects an approach where aesthetics serve acoustics without compromise.
The driver embodies decades of Focal acoustic research. The pure beryllium dome, seven times stiffer than titanium at equal mass, adopts the patented M profile that increases rigidity without adding mass. The supportless pure copper voice coil drastically reduces moving mass, enabling remarkable speed. The 110-micron NBR suspension maintains precise control of excursion.
Adaptation to a closed-back load required specific innovations: progressive bass-reflex system, pyramidal acoustic diffusers to break up standing waves, high-density EVA foam against unwanted reflections. These technical solutions allow the Stellia to transcend the traditional acoustic limitations of closed-back headphones.
The sound reproduction is characterized by a slightly warm balance with present yet controlled bass. Extension down to 5 Hz offers remarkable texture and definition in the low frequencies. The midrange retains Focal’s characteristic transparency, with natural voices free from metallic coloration. Extension up to 40 kHz in the treble ensures exceptional resolution of micro-details without excessive brightness.
The stereo image, though intimate, surprises with its width and precision. Instruments occupy distinct positions with clear separation between sound layers, the result of meticulous work on the internal acoustics.
The Stellia represents a substantial qualitative leap over the Elegia. The move from aluminum-magnesium to pure beryllium noticeably improves resolution and dynamics. With 35 ohms of impedance and 106 dB of sensitivity, the Stellia proves paradoxically easier to drive despite its higher positioning. The significantly improved passive isolation allows use in moderately noisy environments.
The low impedance and high sensitivity allow use with quality portable sources. The short 1.2 m cable with 3.5 mm jack facilitates portable use, while the 3 m XLR cable suits stationary setups. The drivers require several dozen hours of burn-in to reveal their full potential.
The luxurious packaging includes a cognac leatherette presentation box, a hard carrying case, and a dedicated cable case. This presentation evokes prestige watchmaking and partly justifies the price positioning.
The American media have already had the chance to see it and try it out. The French have not even been informed yet. The French manufacturer Focal, based in Saint-Étienne, has just unveiled its new high-end closed-back audiophile headphones.
The pure beryllium used in the drivers is perfectly encapsulated and presents no danger under normal conditions of use. Only beryllium dust, which is absent here, can pose a problem. Focal has used this material for years in its high-end loudspeakers without any reported incidents.
Gentle cleaning with a slightly damp cloth is sufficient for routine care. Occasional application of a product specifically for full-grain leather will preserve the suppleness and appearance of the material. The natural patina that develops is part of the product’s charm and should not be considered deterioration.
Although sharing the same driver technology, the Stellia offers a slightly warmer signature with more present bass. The Utopia retains an advantage in terms of soundstage and airiness, inherent to its open-back design. The Stellia makes up for this with greater versatility of use and appreciable acoustic isolation.

Very good value for money.
Superb Focal build quality.
It’s not an open-back with the same sense of openness, but I find the sound to be very high quality, with excellent dynamics and precision.
There’s a real difference compared to my previous headphones, the Focal Celestee.
I think it’s a perfect match with my Astell&Kern SP3000M DAC.
Focal could nevertheless include a 4.4 mm unbalanced cable as standard. And you can’t even buy this cable from Focal anymore.

Once broken in, this headset proves to be excellent. The music is sublime. I'm rediscovering tracks I've listened to countless times before. Truly a work of art, thank you Focal!
