The Advance Paris PlayStream A5 is a connected amplifier offering 2 x 80 W of power at 8 ohms. It features High-Bias technology and combines classic audio characteristics with network functionalities. Its price ranges from 900 to 1000 euros, targeting the mid-range segment of the PlayStream lineup.
A Design That Embraces Its Heritage
The front panel of the PlayStream A5 proudly displays two blue backlit VU meters, a visual signature of Advance Paris that is as divisive as it is appealing. This aesthetic choice, far from being purely decorative, provides instant visual feedback on the power output. The metal chassis exudes solidity with its 8.1 kg weight, while the smoked plexiglass front adds a modern touch.
Particular attention has been paid to ergonomics: the central rotary selector offers a precise and reassuring feel, complemented by a touch-sensitive strip at the bottom for quick source selection. The central display, though modest in size, clearly shows essential information. Its dimensions of 430 x 135 x 370 mm allow for easy integration into most standard hi-fi furniture.
A nice detail: the High-Bias switch located at the rear remains easily accessible, allowing you to activate or deactivate this function according to your listening preferences.
Technical Architecture: The Subtlety of High-Bias
At the heart of the PlayStream A5 is a class AB amplifier delivering 2x80 watts at 8 ohms (2x130 watts at 4 ohms). But it’s the High-Bias technology that truly sets this amplifier apart. By increasing the idle current of the output transistors, this approach allows the amplifier to operate in near-class A for the first few watts.
In practice, this results in a warmer and more detailed sound at moderate listening volumes, a range where the human ear is particularly sensitive to distortion. The measurements speak for themselves: distortion below 0.004% at 1 kHz for 24 watts, a signal-to-noise ratio of 98 dB, and a frequency response extending from 20 Hz to 80 kHz.
The power supply is based on a substantial toroidal transformer (11.5 x 7 cm) supported by two 10,000 µF filter capacitors. This generous current reserve ensures stable power delivery even with demanding loads. The phono section deserves special mention: configurable for MM or MC (with two gain levels), it relies on low-noise NJM2068 operational amplifiers.
For digital conversion, Advance Paris has chosen a Cirrus Logic WM8740 DAC paired with an AK4113 receiver. This proven combination handles PCM streams up to 24-bit/192 kHz via coaxial and 24-bit/96 kHz via optical.
Connectivity: The Best of Both Worlds
The PlayStream A5’s connectivity reflects a commitment to comprehensiveness rarely seen at this price point. On the analog side, there are six RCA inputs including a configurable phono, complemented by Rec Out, Pre Out, and even two actively filtered subwoofer outputs. The Amp In input allows you to use only the power section, while the Pre Out output lets you add an external power amp.
The digital section is equally well-equipped with four inputs (one coaxial, three optical) and a USB-A port that accepts high-resolution files. The lack of a USB-B input for direct computer connection is one of the few shortcomings in this connectivity.
The integrated network module supports both wired Ethernet and Wi-Fi, with native DLNA and AirPlay compatibility. The list of supported streaming services is impressive: Spotify Connect, Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer, TuneIn, Napster, iHeartRadio, vTuner… The FM/DAB+ tuner rounds out the package, with three dedicated antennas (FM, DAB, Wi-Fi) for optimal reception.
Notably, Bluetooth is not built-in but available via optional modules X-FTB01 or X-FTB02 (the latter supporting aptX HD). This choice helps keep the price down while offering upgradeability for those who want it.
Setup and Everyday Use
Initial setup of the PlayStream A5 is remarkably simple. The Advance Paris app, available on iOS and Android, guides users step by step through network connection and streaming service configuration. Menus accessible via the central rotary knob allow for fine-tuning of settings: tone controls (bass, treble), balance, loudness, and a bypass function for purists.
In use, the amplifier is perfectly stable and responsive. Switching between sources is instantaneous, and streaming service management is free from any noticeable latency. The supplied remote, while not exceptional, does its job well with clearly differentiated buttons.
Displaying metadata (title, artist, bitrate) during streaming or Bluetooth playback is a welcome touch. Tone controls, though sometimes shunned by purists, are practical for compensating for a room’s acoustic flaws or tailoring the sound signature to your preferences.
Positioning Within the PlayStream Range
The PlayStream A5 sits in the middle between the A1 (2x52W) and A7 (2x115W) models. Compared to the A1, it offers substantially more power, more analog and digital inputs, and a configurable MM/MC phono input. Against the A7, it concedes 35 watts per channel, the HDMI ARC input, and a second pair of terminals for bi-wiring or bi-amping.
This positioning is particularly coherent: the A5 offers the essential features of the range without the extra cost associated with the A7’s home theater functions. For pure stereo use with speakers of medium to high sensitivity, its 80 watts are more than sufficient for most home setups.
