A cabinet designed for acoustic precision

The Sonos Five relies on a fully sealed cabinet to prevent resonances and ensure controlled bass. Its front panel houses six speakers: three tweeters (including a center one optimized for vocals) and three mid-woofers for solid, controlled low frequencies.

Discreet despite its dimensions (20.3 × 36.4 × 15.4 cm, weighing 6.36 kg), the speaker adopts a uniform design where the logo blends into the cabinet. Touch controls on top allow quick control, and LEDs indicate operating status.

The Five automatically detects its orientation: horizontally, it delivers stereo sound; vertically, it switches to mono to operate in stereo pairs with a second speaker.

Amplification and acoustic calibration

Each speaker in the Sonos Five is powered by its own Class D amplifier, ensuring power and precise control, even in large rooms.

Trueplay calibration (iOS only) optimizes the speaker according to the room’s acoustics: the app measures the sound response and automatically adjusts equalization, with a noticeable impact in spaces over 20 m².

The Five succeeds the Play:5 Gen 2 launched in 2015. Acoustically, Sonos states that both models offer identical listening experiences. The changes focus on the internal computing platform and aesthetics. Memory and processor have been increased to support the S2 operating system, deployed in June 2020, bringing high-resolution audio support.

One notable absence: unlike the One, the Five doesn’t integrate microphones for Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant voice assistants. Sonos justifies this choice by the Five’s typical positioning, often placed in configurations where integrated voice assistance would add little value.

The Five directly accesses major services: Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, Qobuz, Tidal, YouTube Music. Spotify and Tidal Connect modes allow using these services’ native smartphone apps while designating the Five as the playback device.

Audio files stored on a connected computer or NAS server are also accessible in AIFF, MP3, FLAC, WMA, and WAV formats. Tens of thousands of internet radio stations via TuneIn complete the offering, along with free Sonos Radio and its paid HD version with CD quality.

No, the Five works perfectly without Trueplay and already delivers high sound quality. However, Trueplay calibration significantly improves performance in most environments, particularly when the speaker is placed near reflective surfaces. This feature remains limited to iOS devices.
