The Sonos Sub (Gen 3) is the third generation of the renowned wireless subwoofer from the American brand Sonos. Designed to complement existing Sonos audio systems, this subwoofer adds an extra dimension to the listening experience by delivering deep and powerful bass.
At the heart of the Sonos Sub (Gen 3) are two force-canceling drivers, positioned face-to-face. This unique configuration eliminates unwanted vibrations and resonances, ensuring pure and distortion-free bass reproduction. The Sub can reach frequencies as low as 25 Hz, covering the entire bass spectrum audible to the human ear.
The subwoofer is equipped with two Class-D digital amplifiers, specifically tuned for its unique acoustic architecture. This high-quality amplification, combined with advanced digital signal processing (DSP), allows the Sub to deliver powerful and precise bass, regardless of the listening volume.
Sonos’ exclusive Trueplay technology optimizes the Sub’s performance based on the room’s acoustics. Using the microphone of an iOS device, the system measures the acoustic response of the environment and automatically adjusts the subwoofer’s settings to achieve the best possible sound quality.
The Sonos Sub (Gen 3) retains the iconic design of its predecessors, with its square shape and characteristic central cutout. Available in glossy black or white finishes, it blends seamlessly into any interior. Its compact dimensions (389 x 402 x 158 mm) and weight of 16 kg make it relatively easy to place and move.
The Sub (Gen 3) is robustly built with high-quality materials. The central cutout, known as the “acoustic slot,” is not just aesthetic but plays a crucial role in the subwoofer’s acoustic performance. The Sub can be positioned vertically or horizontally without compromising sound quality, offering great installation flexibility.
The Sonos Sub (Gen 3) is designed to integrate perfectly into the Sonos ecosystem. It connects wirelessly to the home network via Wi-Fi (compatible with 802.11b/g/n standards on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) or can be directly connected to the router via a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port for a more stable connection.
The Sub is compatible with most amplified Sonos products, including the Arc, Beam, and Ray soundbars, as well as the Era 300, Era 100 speakers, and older models like the Play:5. It can be used in a home theater setup or to enhance stereo music listening.
A notable new feature of the third generation is the ability to use two Subs in the same room, providing even more uniform and powerful bass response.
Setting up the Sonos Sub (Gen 3) is remarkably simple. Just plug it into a power outlet, press the connection button, and follow the instructions in the Sonos app. Pairing with other Sonos speakers is automatic and takes only a few minutes.
The Sonos app offers precise control over the Sub’s settings. You can adjust the bass level, invert the phase (0° or 180°) for better integration with other speakers, and even completely disable the Sub if needed. These settings can be customized individually for each room or listening configuration.
While the Sonos Sub (Gen 3) maintains the same sound performance as its predecessor, it features several internal upgrades. Processing power has been increased with a quad-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, and memory has been doubled to 256 MB of RAM and 256 MB of flash storage.
These upgrades make the Sub more future-proof for software updates and new features. The Sub (Gen 3) also has a more powerful radio receiver for extended range and a more stable connection.
Visually, the only noticeable difference is the redesigned connection button, which aligns with the design language of newer Sonos products.
The Sub (Gen 3) is compatible with most amplified Sonos products but not with the Sonos Connect, Port, or Move. It’s important to check compatibility before purchasing.
No, the Sonos Sub (Gen 3) is designed to work exclusively with Sonos products. It cannot be used as a standalone subwoofer with other audio systems.
Yes, the Trueplay feature currently requires an iOS device for calibration. Android users cannot use this feature but can still manually adjust the Sub’s settings via the Sonos app.
There is no noticeable sound difference between the Sub (Gen 3) and previous generations. The improvements are primarily in internal components and connectivity.

It stands out, no doubt I can't seem to adjust it properly, or maybe I don't have good hearing for high frequencies.
In summary, if the volume is too low, I only hear the subwoofer; that's for radio. Now let's see how it performs for movies...
