The application of the gold leaves on the side panels of the Phantom was entrusted to the Ateliers Gohard in Paris. Also responsible for restoring the gilding of the Opéra Garnier and other French national monuments, these master gilders use ancestral methods.
Each gold leaf is applied by hand in an eight-step process, creating an absolutely inimitable patina. This technique consists of applying a special glue to the surface. Once the mixtion is “in love” - an expression alluding to a slightly damp kiss - the gold leaves are laid down. And these heritage techniques require absolute precision because once a leaf has been applied, it can no longer be removed.
