The Classic POWER marks a turning point in the lineage of Cyrus power amplifiers, combining four decades of British know-how with the latest technological advances developed for the XR series. This next-generation stereo power amp pushes the performance limits of the Classic range while retaining the brand’s signature half-width chassis.
A ground-up re-engineering of the technical design
The Classic POWER benefits from a complete overhaul of its electronic topology, drawing on developments from the flagship XR series. At its heart, a 408 VA toroidal transformer provides a generous, stable supply to the power stages. This oversized power supply enables the amplifier to deliver 87 watts per channel into 8 ohms, 110 watts into 6 ohms, and up to 144 watts into 4 ohms—figures that reflect excellent current capability.
A wide-bandwidth design is one of this amplifier’s key strengths. Extending from DC up to 48 kHz (-3 dB), this linear frequency response ensures no phase rotation within the useful audio band. The Huntingdon engineers have slightly curtailed the bandwidth compared to the Power-XR model (which reaches up to 100 kHz), a deliberate decision to optimize compatibility with more affordable speakers, which are often less stable in the extreme treble.
The circuit favors short signal paths and employs carefully selected components. The output stage uses faster, new-generation transistors, contributing to a particularly swift rise time and faithful reproduction of transients. This architecture achieves a remarkably low total harmonic distortion—below 0.002% at rated power—as well as a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 100 dB.
Professional connectivity and system integration
The rear panel of the Classic POWER reveals connectivity designed to suit all usage scenarios. Inputs are doubled with both unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR, the latter offering better noise rejection over long runs thanks to their 28 kΩ input impedance. Input sensitivities vary by format: 450 mV for RCA and 900 mV for XLR at full power into 6 ohms.
A welcome feature: RCA daisy-chain outputs that allow multiple amplifiers to be cascaded for multichannel or bi-amped configurations. This functionality, rarely found on amplifiers in this class, reflects Cyrus’s commitment to a modular philosophy.
Integration within a Cyrus system is facilitated by the proprietary MC-Bus port, enabling bidirectional communication between components. A 12V trigger completes the auto power-on options, ensuring synchronized startup with any compatible preamplifier. The USB port on the rear panel is not for audio but for firmware updates, safeguarding your investment over time.
The half-width chassis: a visual and technical signature
The pressure die-cast aluminum alloy enclosure, unchanged since the 1990s, is far more than an aesthetic signature. This non-ferrous construction eliminates magnetic interference that could affect sensitive circuits. The compact dimensions (215 × 75 × 355 mm) allow two Cyrus components to fit in the space typically occupied by a single traditional unit.
Despite its small size, the Classic POWER weighs in at 7.3 kg, reflecting the density of internal components and build quality. Integrated heatsink fins maintain optimal operating temperature without resorting to active cooling, ensuring perfectly silent operation.
The satin black finish and signature green display may appear dated compared with contemporary designs, but this visual consistency aids harmonious integration into an existing Cyrus system. New adjustable feet and a reinforced metal baseplate effectively reduce mechanical vibrations, improving stability and isolation.
Upgradeability via PSX-R2 external power supply
One of Cyrus’s founding philosophies remains the upgradeability of its products. The Classic POWER includes a dedicated port for the PSX-R2 external power supply, an optional 300 VA unit that can fundamentally elevate the amplifier’s performance. This ultra-stable regulated supply powers the Classic POWER’s voltage stage directly, bringing substantial improvements in dynamics, spatial definition, and bass control.
The PSX-R2 delivers perfectly filtered DC, eliminating any trace of mains hum and drastically reducing background noise. Connection is via a proprietary 5-pin cable, and the intelligence embedded in both units automatically adjusts operating parameters. This modular approach allows you to stagger your investment while retaining significant upgrade potential.
