Tangent CD III
Overview
The Tangent CD III is the latest version of the Danish manufacturer’s CD players. This model enables uninterrupted playback between tracks, making it easier to enjoy live albums and classical works. It features a display for simple navigation and retains the brand’s usual compact form factor, offering a practical solution for physical disc collections.
Clean Scandinavian design in the service of functionality
The CD III continues the Danish design philosophy established by Tangent since its founding in 1996. With its square dimensions of 200 mm per side and only 65 mm in height, this player takes up barely more space than a CD itself. The matte black chassis sports a brushed aluminum front with the model name discreetly inscribed. The front slot-loading mechanism—a proven design requiring fewer moving parts than a traditional drawer—contributes to the device’s reliability while preserving the purity of its lines.
The LCD screen is the most visible new feature compared to the CD II, which made do with a simple status LED. This display interface now allows for precise track navigation, showing track number, elapsed time, and total duration. The control buttons, arranged on either side of the screen, offer a satisfying tactile feel with robust mechanisms. The overall build reflects careful assembly, typical of Danish craftsmanship where visual simplicity never excludes manufacturing quality.
Comprehensive connectivity despite compact size
The rear panel of the CD III brings together the essential connections needed for flexible integration into any audio system. Stereo RCA analog outputs allow a traditional connection to any amplifier, while the Toslink optical digital output enables direct connection to external converters or digital amplifiers. This dual approach lets each user operate the player according to their preferences: use the internal 16-bit/44.1 kHz SC6135B converter or delegate conversion to a more sophisticated external DAC.
The built-in 100–240 V power supply eliminates the need for a bulky external adapter, enhancing installation convenience. The main power switch is logically located on the rear panel, allowing a complete power cut. In standby mode, consumption remains below 0.5 W, meeting the European EuP 2013 energy efficiency standards.
Gapless playback: a long-awaited fix
The integration of gapless playback is the most significant technical change in the CD III. This feature, absent from the CD II, directly addresses complaints from users frustrated by artificial gaps between tracks. Concept albums, live recordings, and classical works regain their original fluidity, without the distracting pauses that broke musical immersion.
This technical improvement may seem basic—continuous playback has been standard on CD players since the 1980s—but its absence on many recent models, including from reputable manufacturers, often results from decoding chips optimized for digital file playback rather than the continuous stream of traditional audio CDs. Tangent has clearly listened to its user community and reinstated this fundamental function in the CD III.
Audio performance and technical specifications
The SC6135B converter ensures faithful reproduction of the digital signal with a frequency response extending from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The signal-to-noise ratio above 80 dBA guarantees hiss-free listening, even during the quietest musical passages. While these specifications may seem modest compared to today’s high-resolution converters, they perfectly match the requirements of the Red Book CD format at 16-bit/44.1 kHz.
The reading mechanism, quiet in operation, handles commercial discs as well as burned CD-R and CD-RW media efficiently. Compatibility with MP3 files burned to CD also lets you enjoy personal compilations, though sound quality will then depend heavily on the encoding bitrate of the source files.
A universal remote for the Tangent ecosystem
The included infrared remote goes beyond simple CD player control. Designed as a universal interface for the entire range, it also operates the Ampster BT III, Tuner III, preAmp III, and PowerAmpster III. This unified approach eliminates a pile-up of remotes on the coffee table while simplifying day-to-day use of a complete Tangent system.
Basic functions—play, pause, stop, and track navigation—are available directly. The remote also enables disc ejection and access to tone controls when used with compatible amplifiers. An infrared extension cable comes with the unit, allowing you to place the player in a closed cabinet while maintaining remote control.
Integration into Tangent’s III series
The CD III fits naturally into Tangent’s new generation of compact electronics. Paired with the preAmp III and PowerAmpster III, it forms a high-fidelity separates system occupying less than 20 cm in height when stacked. This modular approach lets you build your system progressively according to your needs and budget, starting, for example, with the CD III/Ampster BT III duo, then moving toward a more ambitious setup with separate preamplifier and power amplifier.
The aesthetic coherence among the different components creates a visually harmonious whole, far from the mismatch often seen when combining devices from different brands. The identical format of all components makes them easy to fit into tight spaces: a desk shelf, a compact TV stand, or a custom wall installation.
Frequently asked questions
Can the CD III play CDs burned with high-resolution files (FLAC, 24-bit WAV)? The CD III plays standard audio CDs (16-bit/44.1 kHz) and CDs containing MP3 files. High-resolution files burned to CD will only be recognized if they are in MP3 format. For native playback of high-resolution files, a network player or dedicated digital transport is required.
What is the main difference between the CD II and the CD III? Beyond the addition of a display, the major difference is the implementation of gapless (seamless) playback. This feature, sorely missing from the CD II, finally allows you to listen to live albums, symphonies, and concept albums without artificial pauses between tracks. This improvement transforms the listening experience for many musical genres.
Does the optical output significantly improve sound quality? The optical output transmits the digital signal without conversion, enabling the use of an external converter. The perceived improvement will depend on the quality of the external DAC used. With a high-end converter, gains can be substantial in terms of definition, soundstage, and dynamics. The internal SC6135B converter is nevertheless perfectly respectable for everyday use.
Is the player compatible with karaoke CDs (CD+G)? The CD III focuses on pure audio playback and does not support specialized formats like CD+G. It plays standard audio CDs, CD-R/RW, and discs containing MP3 files. For karaoke applications, a specialized player remains preferable.
