The Fyne Audio F500S mark a turning point in the evolution of the Scottish brand’s bookshelf speakers. Unveiled in February 2025 at the Bristol Hi-Fi Show, these new-generation compact speakers build on the fundamentals that made the F500 series successful while incorporating substantial technical improvements, all without a price increase. The result of the combined expertise of former Tannoy engineers, these speakers demonstrate that technological innovation and affordability can go hand in hand in the world of high fidelity.
The F500S adopt a classic bookshelf format with dimensions of 325 mm in height, 204 mm in width, and 317 mm in depth. Each speaker weighs 8.3 kg, reflecting a robust construction in high-rigidity MDF with extensive internal bracing. The slightly rounded front and rear panels are not just an aesthetic choice: this design improves the dispersion of the IsoFlare driver while reducing colorations related to edge diffraction from the cabinet.
The finish, offered in real wood veneer (black oak or natural walnut) or in piano black lacquer, gives the F500S a visual presence that transcends their price positioning. The black fabric grilles attach magnetically, allowing you to easily switch between protecting the drivers and showcasing the IsoFlare coaxial driver with its distinctive FyneFlute surround. The rear of the speaker features two pairs of high-quality gold-plated binding posts for bi-wiring, as well as a presence switch offering ±3 dB adjustment in the 2.5–5 kHz range to tailor the sound to the characteristics of the listening room.
The aluminum plinth integrates the patented BassTrax Tractrix system, recognizable by its metal conical diffuser. This base is not merely decorative: it is an active acoustic element that transforms the plane wave from the port into a 360-degree spherical wave. The aluminum feet provide mechanical decoupling while maintaining the optimal distance between the port and the diffuser.
At the heart of the F500S lies the new-generation 150 mm IsoFlare transducer, where a 25 mm magnesium dome tweeter is placed at the exact center of the multi-layer composite-fiber mid-bass driver. This point-source configuration, refined by Dr. Paul Mills and his team since their time at Tannoy, aims to reproduce an ideal sound source where all frequencies emanate from a single point in space.
The novelty of this generation lies in the use of a neodymium magnet for the tweeter, combined with a vented rear chamber that lowers the resonance frequency well below the crossover point set at 1.7 kHz. The magnesium dome, a material both light and rigid, pushes breakup modes beyond 30 kHz. The waveguide, whose geometry has been computer-optimized, eliminates unwanted internal reflections while ensuring a linear frequency response and controlled dispersion.
The mid-bass cone benefits from the FyneFlute surround, those characteristic flutes that are not merely ornamental. This variable geometry, the result of advanced computer modeling, effectively terminates cone energy and eliminates poor-termination effects that typically color the sound. Spurious resonances are thus drastically reduced, enabling better transient definition and minimal coloration of the musical message.
The passive crossover, mounted on a rigid printed circuit board and cryogenically treated at Fyne Audio’s facilities, uses carefully selected audiophile-grade components: low-loss laminated-core inductors, audiophile-grade polypropylene capacitors, and thick-film non-inductive resistors. This purist approach to signal handling ensures optimal transmission between the amplifier and the transducers.
The BassTrax Tractrix system is one of Fyne Audio’s technical hallmarks. Unlike traditional cylindrical ports venting to the rear or front, the F500S use a downward-firing port that works against a diffuser with a tractrix profile—a precise mathematical curve maintaining a 90-degree angle at every intersection of the expanding wave.
This configuration, inspired by Voight’s work in the 1920s but applied here in an unprecedented way, converts port energy into an omnidirectional spherical wave. The advantages are multiple: reduced interaction with nearby walls, better room integration regardless of speaker placement, and more homogeneous bass throughout the listening area. The system also acts as a mechanical damper, blocking potential standing waves produced by the main internal port.
The bass-reflex loading uses a dual-cavity system that broadens the tuning frequency, reducing cone excursion in the bass while maintaining an extended response down to 45 Hz (-6 dB in real-world conditions). This sophisticated approach allows the F500S to deliver surprisingly deep and articulate bass for speakers of this size, without the usual placement constraints of rear-ported monitors.
With a sensitivity of 89 dB for 2.83 V at 1 meter and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, the F500S are comfortable with amplifiers delivering between 30 and 100 watts RMS. This respectable efficiency, combined with a continuous power handling of 50 watts, offers great latitude in amplifier selection. The speakers can thus fit into modest systems as well as more ambitious setups.
Frequency response extends from 45 Hz to 34 kHz (-6 dB), widely covering the audible spectrum and beyond. This extension into the extreme highs, made possible by the magnesium tweeter, brings a sense of air and space characteristic of high-definition transducers. The bass, despite the compact cabinet dimensions, surprises with its depth and articulation, thanks to the effectiveness of the BassTrax system.
The constant directivity ensured by the IsoFlare configuration provides a stable and precise stereo image, even outside the ideal sweet spot. This characteristic makes the F500S particularly suitable for smaller spaces where the listener cannot always position themselves at the apex of the optimal stereo triangle. The soundstage retains its coherence and depth across an expanded listening area.
The rear presence switch allows fine-tuning of tonal balance to room acoustics and personal preferences. This function is particularly useful in highly damped rooms or conversely very reflective spaces, enabling adjustment of mid-treble liveliness without resorting to external EQ.
The F500S incorporate the latest generation IsoFlare driver with a high-performance neodymium magnet, a vented rear chamber for the tweeter, and a magnesium dome replacing the titanium of the F500. The waveguide has been completely redesigned to improve dispersion and eliminate internal reflections. These changes deliver a more natural treble extension, better midrange definition, and superior time coherence.
Contrary to common belief, the BassTrax system simplifies speaker placement. The omnidirectional bass diffusion significantly reduces problematic interactions with nearby walls. The F500S can therefore be positioned closer to boundaries than a traditional rear-ported speaker while maintaining balanced bass. A distance of 30 to 60 cm from the rear wall remains optimal for soundstage depth.
The rear switch provides three positions: neutral (0), attenuation (-3 dB), or boost (+3 dB) in the 2.5–5 kHz band. This zone corresponds to vocal presence and instrument brightness. Attenuation suits highly reverberant rooms or nearfield listening, while boost compensates for very damped acoustics or restores liveliness to dull recordings.
