Yamaha YH-4000
Overview
The YH-4000 marks Yamaha’s return to the high-end planar magnetic headphone segment, fifty years after the launch of the HP-1 that established the brand’s reputation with this technology. Positioned as a more accessible alternative to the flagship YH-5000SE, this 320-gram open-back headphone combines reworked orthodynamic drivers, a magnesium chassis, and hand assembly at the Kakegawa factory, where the brand’s grand pianos are also made.
A recalibrated sonic approach for more body and presence
The YH-4000 shares the same 50 mm orthodynamic drivers as the YH-5000SE, but Yamaha has deliberately removed the damping material present in the flagship model and meticulously fine-tuned every parameter to achieve a warmer, more balanced sound signature. This change addresses criticisms of the YH-5000SE, sometimes deemed too analytical and bright in the treble, to deliver a more neutral listen with bass that is now solid and present.
Orthodynamic technology, Yamaha’s name for its planar magnetic drivers, is based on an ultra-thin 12-micron polyester diaphragm—comparable to that of a C90 audio cassette. Conductive coils are printed directly on both sides of this membrane, which is sandwiched between two perforated magnetic structures. This configuration allows the diaphragm to move perfectly uniformly across its entire surface, unlike conventional dynamic drivers where only the voice coil drives the cone.
The pneumatic micro-dampers positioned on each side of the driver precisely control diaphragm movement without stifling its natural energy. This control of airflow helps preserve signal dynamics while limiting distortion, which is particularly audible during fortissimo passages or in deep bass.
Construction and materials: Yamaha’s characteristic obsession with detail
The YH-4000’s chassis uses magnesium, a metal chosen for its unique combination of lightness and rigidity. This material has vibration-damping properties that are particularly advantageous for headphones, helping to limit parasitic resonances that could color the sound. The cups feature an open-back architecture with a large vent protected by a triaxial technical fabric—the same type of material used in the aerospace industry for its strength and controlled air permeability.
A new PET mesh filter, developed specifically for this model, regulates the pressure inside the cups. After testing numerous woven materials with different airflow characteristics, engineers selected the one offering the ideal permeability to achieve the desired sound: dense, expressive mids combined with punchy bass, without sacrificing the openness and spatialization characteristic of an open-back headphone.
The headband reprises the YH-5000SE’s dual-layer design. The brushed stainless-steel support structure ensures overall robustness while applying optimal lateral pressure. The head strap uses a three-dimensional weave that naturally conforms to the shape of the skull and evenly distributes weight. The continuously sliding, detent-free adjustment system allows for millimeter-precise fitting to suit every morphology.
Ergonomics designed for long listening sessions
The hybrid earpads developed exclusively for the YH-4000 combine two materials with complementary properties. The skin-contact surface uses high-quality synthetic suede, prized for its velvety texture and ability to limit heat buildup. The outer perimeter employs supple polyurethane leather that ensures the acoustic seal needed for proper bass reproduction. The entire surface is finely perforated to promote airflow and contribute to an open sound.
Although the earpads share the same mounting system as those of the YH-5000SE, theoretically allowing interchangeability, the YH-4000’s pads appear to have a slightly larger surface area. This subtle change could contribute to better pressure distribution and thus increased comfort during extended listening.
The inclined swivel mechanism of the earcups deserves special attention. Unlike conventional systems that pivot only in a vertical plane, the YH-4000’s is angled to naturally follow the contour behind the ear. This inclination not only improves comfort but also ensures optimal sealing, which is crucial for faithful bass reproduction in an open-back headphone.
Accessories and artisanal manufacturing
The YH-4000 comes with a 2-meter unbalanced silver-plated OFC (Oxygen-Free Copper) cable terminated with a 3.5 mm jack plug and supplied with a screw-on 6.35 mm adapter. This choice to include only one cable, unlike the two (balanced and unbalanced) supplied with the YH-5000SE, aligns with the more accessible pricing strategy for this model.
The hard carrying case measuring 228 × 130 × 283 mm protects the headphone effectively during transport. Its semi-rigid design offers an appealing compromise between protection and bulk, allowing the headphone and cable to be stored safely.
Each unit is hand-assembled at Yamaha’s Kakegawa factory in Japan, the same site that produces the brand’s grand pianos and high-end audio components. This choice of local manufacturing with skilled artisans ensures rigorous quality control at every stage of assembly, from driver construction to final finishing.
Positioning against the YH-5000SE: more than a simple variant
According to interviews with Yamaha executives, although the technical differences between the YH-4000 and the YH-5000SE may seem minor on paper, the sonic gap is significant. The YH-5000SE is described as faithfully and sensitively reproducing the artists’ messages, while the YH-4000 fully expresses their passion. This semantic nuance reflects a more musical and engaging approach for the YH-4000, less geared toward pure analysis than its big brother.
The changes go beyond simply removing the damping material. The YH-5000SE’s woven stainless-steel filter is replaced by a PET filter on the YH-4000, the micro-perforated air dampers adopt a raw steel finish instead of black coating, and the Yamaha logo features a black-and-silver finish rather than all black. These changes, though subtle, help create a distinct visual and sonic identity.
The decision to offer a single set of hybrid earpads instead of the two sets (leather and suede) of the YH-5000SE, as well as a single cable instead of two, significantly reduces the final cost while retaining the essentials of build quality and acoustic performance.
What the press says
The Yamaha YH-4000 set new standards for the price when it comes to detail resolution and composure. [...] In general terms, they are exquisitely detailed and deliver a level of clarity that’s class-leading. [...] Some may find the Yamahas’ unflappability makes them sound a little matter-of-fact, overly analytical even. [...] They may not have the outright dynamic muscle of the very best, but counter with a degree of finesse that is spellbinding at times.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the YH-4000 require a dedicated headphone amplifier to perform properly?
With an impedance of 34 ohms and a sensitivity of 97 dB/mW, the YH-4000 remains relatively easy to drive compared to some planar magnetic headphones. Nevertheless, a quality headphone amplifier will allow it to fully realize its dynamic potential and its ability to reproduce micro-details, particularly in the low frequencies, which demand more power for proper control.
What is the practical difference between orthodynamic technology and conventional dynamic drivers?
Orthodynamic drivers use an ultra-thin membrane onto which conductive coils are printed, with the assembly placed between two magnetic structures. This design allows the entire diaphragm surface to move uniformly, unlike dynamic drivers where only the voice coil drives the cone. The result is reduced distortion, faster transient response, and better tonal coherence across the spectrum.
Are the YH-5000SE earpads compatible with the YH-4000?
Both models share the same mounting mechanism, which makes pad swapping theoretically possible. The YH-5000SE’s sheepskin leather (HEP-5000LE) and Ultrasuede (HEP-5000SU) pads can therefore be mounted on the YH-4000 to subtly alter the sound signature and comfort according to personal preferences.
