The ArtSound UNI30 is a two-way passive hi-fi speaker with a bass-reflex enclosure, designed for medium-sized spaces. Sold in pairs, it has a compact form factor while still delivering effective bass reproduction. Its spherical ball-joint mount allows for wall or ceiling installation. The speaker can be used in residential interiors or professional environments such as shops and restaurants.

The Universals series: three models, one common approach

The UNI30 is part of the Universals range, a series of on-wall speakers available in three versions: UNI20, UNI30, and UNI40. Each model is intended for a different room size and power level:

The UNI30 therefore occupies an intermediate position: more powerful than the UNI20 and equipped with a bass-reflex port that allows it to better reproduce low frequencies, yet more compact than the UNI40, which is intended for large rooms or high sound levels.

The Universals series is characterized by a clean front panel combined with rounded corners, an aesthetic choice that makes it discreet and well-suited to both contemporary and traditional interiors. ArtSound draws on more than 20 years of expertise in the design of these speakers.

Acoustic design and drivers

The UNI30 uses a two-way configuration, splitting the workload between a 3.5-inch woofer and a half-inch tweeter.

The woofer features a polypropylene cone reinforced with mica. This composite offers both lightness and rigidity, two essential qualities for a transducer tasked with reproducing mid-bass frequencies with accuracy and responsiveness. Polypropylene is highly resistant to humidity, which makes the speaker suitable for environments such as kitchens.

The neodymium-magnet tweeter handles the high frequencies. Neodymium provides a powerful magnetic field in a compact form factor, helping to keep the overall size down while ensuring a fast response to transients.

The bass-reflex port, located on the rear of the speaker, plays an active role in extending the low end. It allows the air inside the cabinet to contribute to reproducing low frequencies, partially offsetting the limitations inherent to the small enclosure volume.

The frequency response ranges from 100 Hz to 20 kHz. The 100 Hz low-end limit means sub-bass is not covered, which is a logical choice given the speaker’s compact size. For applications that require deeper bass, adding a subwoofer can complete the system.

Cabinet and mounting bracket

The UNI30’s cabinet is molded from ABS, a thermoplastic known for its strength, light weight, and ease of manufacture. This material ensures good durability and long-term reliability.

With dimensions of 180 × 115 × 112 mm and a weight of 1.2 kg, the speaker is easy to handle and install. Its vertical rectangular format can also be oriented horizontally if required.

The included mounting bracket is multifunctional and allows for fast installation. The spherical ball-joint hinge makes it possible to align the speaker in the desired orientation, including horizontally. This positioning flexibility is particularly useful when the speaker is mounted high up: it can be tilted downwards to direct the sound towards the listening area.

Connection is via pluggable screw terminals, which greatly simplifies attaching the speaker cable. This design allows for a neat installation, even in hard-to-reach places.

Power and compatibility

The UNI30 is a passive speaker, which means it requires an external amplifier to operate. Its rated power handling is between 20 and 60 watts, and its 8-ohm impedance makes it compatible with the vast majority of hi-fi and home theater amplifiers available on the market.

Its sensitivity of 90 dB at 1 watt/1 meter indicates decent efficiency: a modest amplifier will be enough to produce a satisfying sound level for home use or background music in commercial spaces.

For professional installations using 100-volt lines (typical in shops and public venues with long cable runs), ArtSound offers a specific variant: the UNI30T. This version incorporates a transformer that allows switching between standard 8-ohm operation and 100 V mode.
