The ATN3600L stylus, the centerpiece of Audio-Technica’s entry-level turntables for over fifty years, finally has an elliptical version. The ATN3600LE keeps the same ease of installation as its predecessor while adopting a more refined tip geometry, capable of extracting more information from the grooves. A simple upgrade for owners of AT-LP60X, Sound Burger, or any model originally equipped with the standard conical stylus.
The difference between a conical stylus and an elliptical stylus lies in how the tip makes contact with the record groove. A conical profile, with a circular cross-section, sits relatively high in the groove and only picks up part of the information cut into its sides. The elliptical profile of the ATN3600LE, measuring 0.3 × 0.7 mil, has an oblong cross-section that allows it to sit deeper and more closely follow the groove walls. This larger contact area results in better reproduction of high frequencies and more accurate tracking of complex passages, particularly toward the center of the record where distortion tends to increase with a conical stylus.
Another concrete benefit relates to slightly worn records. By sitting deeper in the groove, the elliptical tip passes below the tiny surface scratches that, with a conical stylus, generate audible crackling. Background noise is reduced, and old records regain some of their former glory.
The ATN3600LE can be installed in a few seconds, with no tools or prior knowledge. Simply remove the old stylus assembly by pulling it slightly at an angle, then snap the new one onto the cartridge until you hear the locking click. The recommended tracking force remains the same as that of the original conical model (between 3 and 4 grams, with 3.5 grams as the standard value), which means no adjustment is needed on automatic turntables where this parameter cannot be changed.
This full mechanical compatibility with existing ATN3600L and ATN3600LC styli allows you to switch to an elliptical tip without altering the rest of your setup. The affected turntables — AT-LP60X, AT-LP60, AT-LP2D, AT-PL300, Sound Burger AT-SB727 and AT-SB2022, AT-LPGO-BT, and AT-PL50 — all retain their usual operation.
The ATN3600LC uses a conical stylus identical to the old ATN3600L and therefore offers the same sound, with only a new housing design. The ATN3600LE uses an elliptical stylus that improves tracking precision and reduces surface noise. Both models share the same mechanical compatibility.
No. The ATN3600LE operates within the same tracking force range as the original stylus (3 to 4 grams). On automatic turntables in the AT-LP60X series, no adjustment is necessary or even possible.
Audio-Technica estimates the lifespan at around 300 hours of listening. Signs of wear include loss of definition in the treble, increased distortion at the end of a side, or unusual sibilance. A visual inspection with a loupe can reveal a dulled or damaged tip.
No. Its geometry is designed for 33 and 45 rpm microgroove records. 78 rpm records, which have wider grooves, require a dedicated stylus with different dimensions.
It’s actually the opposite: a properly set elliptical stylus distributes pressure more evenly on the groove walls, which tends to preserve vinyl better than a conical stylus, all other things being equal.
Some entry-level turntables from these brands use compatible cartridges. However, Audio-Technica only guarantees proper operation on its own models. You should check compatibility in the manual for the turntable in question or with the manufacturer.
None. The stylus can be removed and refitted with simple finger pressure, with no screws or screwdriver. The procedure is identical to replacing an ATN3600L or ATN3600LC.
