Overview
Since 1993, the Baltic range has embodied a unique approach to sound reproduction: a spherical satellite housing a three-way coaxial speaker, a concept for which Cabasse remains the only manufacturer in the world. This fifth generation refines the formula with a completely redesigned TCA transducer, honeycomb-structured aramid diaphragms and understated matte finishes. The wall-mounted version offers discreet integration without sacrificing the acoustic qualities that have built the range’s reputation.
The point-source principle applied in three ways
The coaxial architecture of the Baltic 5 combines three transducers on the same axis: a 20 cm woofer for the low frequencies, a 10 cm midrange driver, and a 2.5 cm tweeter placed at the center. This layout allows the entire sound spectrum to radiate from a single point, eliminating the time delays between channels that are characteristic of conventional speakers with separate drivers.
Phase alignment across the different frequencies remains constant regardless of the listening angle, a notable benefit in setups where the listener cannot always be positioned exactly on-axis with the speakers. The HDSE (Homogeneous Distribution of the Sonic Energy) measurement protocol developed by Cabasse takes into account 360° directivity, not just the frontal axis. Direct and reflected sounds thus share a spectral coherence that promotes a stable soundstage, even away from the primary listening position.
Aramid diaphragms and rare-earth motors
For this fifth iteration, engineers at the Plouzané research center have developed new honeycomb-structured aramid fiber diaphragms. This honeycomb design offers a particularly favorable stiffness-to-mass ratio: the diaphragms resist deformation without adding weight to the moving assembly, which improves transient response.
The bass and midrange diaphragms share the same material and are manufactured simultaneously by a dedicated robot, ensuring consistent behavior between the two ranges. The cone profile follows a smooth, continuous curve that maximizes radiating surface while reducing diffractions at the junctions. The rare-earth magnet motors, more powerful than conventional ferrite magnets, provide increased control over diaphragm motion and boost power handling compared with previous generations.
A sphere that serves as an acoustic enclosure
The spherical shape of the enclosure is not just an aesthetic signature. This geometry eliminates the corners and edges responsible for unwanted diffractions and colorations in the midrange. The absence of parallel surfaces inside the speaker prevents standing waves that would typically affect rectangular cabinets.
The bass-reflex loading integrated into this 27 cm diameter sphere extends low-frequency response down to 75 Hz. While this limit may be sufficient for music in a moderately sized room, adding a subwoofer remains relevant for reproducing the infra-bass range or movie soundtracks. The integrated magnetic shielding allows you to place the speaker right next to a television without risk of interference.
Wall mounting and adjustable orientation
The wall-mounted version of the Baltic 5 includes a single-screw mounting system that simplifies installation. Once in place, the sphere pivots on its support thanks to a magnetic system, allowing you to aim the transducer toward the listening area without disassembly. This installation flexibility is suitable both for stereo use and for multichannel home cinema setups, where surround speakers often have to adapt to placement constraints.
The weight of 7.5 kg per unit in wall configuration does, however, require mounting on a solid support, ideally a load-bearing wall or reinforced studs. The compact dimensions (27.3 × 27.3 × 34.5 cm with the bracket) allow integration in tight spaces, such as above furniture or on either side of a screen.
Recommended amplification and system matching
With a sensitivity of 91 dB/W/m, the Baltic 5 offers solid efficiency for a compact three-way loudspeaker. It can handle a nominal power of 250 W and peaks up to 1210 W, providing ample dynamic headroom. The nominal impedance of 8 ohms drops to 3.5 ohms in certain parts of the spectrum: an amplifier that is stable with low-impedance loads and capable of delivering current will be an appropriate partner.
Pairing with the connected subwoofer The Pearl Sub is the most integrated option in the Cabasse range. The latter houses the amplification, streaming module, and automatic room correction, turning the Baltic 5 into a complete 2.1 system without separate electronics. Passive Santorin subwoofers remain compatible for setups driven by a conventional amplifier or home cinema processor.
Comparison with the Baltic Evolution
The Baltic 5 retains the dimensions of its predecessor but introduces several substantial improvements. The TCA transducer replaces the TC23: honeycomb-structured aramid diaphragms take over from Duocell diaphragms, with gains in stiffness and radiating surface. The new-generation rare-earth motors improve power handling and control of the moving assembly.
Aesthetically, the matte finish (black or white) contrasts with the glossy lacquers of earlier versions. The transducer’s design has also evolved: all three diaphragms are black, forming a visually more homogeneous surface than the previous configurations where the black/white contrast highlighted the coaxial architecture. This visual subtlety may appeal or disappoint depending on taste, but obviously does not affect acoustic performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the wall-mounted Baltic 5 be used without a subwoofer?
Yes, its frequency response extends down to 75 Hz, covering most of the musical range. In a small room or for listening at moderate volume, the produced bass remains satisfying. For larger rooms, higher listening levels, or reproduction of the deepest frequencies (movie infra-bass, organ, electronic music), a subwoofer usefully completes the spectrum.
What amplifier power should I plan for?
An amplifier delivering 50 to 150 W into 8 ohms is suitable for most home applications. The Baltic 5 can handle much higher power levels (250 W nominal, 1210 W peak) without damage, which allows dynamic peaks without compression. The minimum impedance of 3.5 ohms requires an amplifier that is stable with low-impedance loads.
Is the wall bracket included?
Yes, the wall bracket is an integral part of the wall-mounted version. It is fixed to the wall with a single screw, and the sphere magnetically locks onto it. No additional accessories are required for installation, apart from screws and anchors suited to the wall type.
Can the Baltic 5 be used as a center speaker in a home theater system?
Absolutely. The magnetic shielding allows installation close to a television. The even dispersion of the coaxial driver and phase coherence over a wide angle make it a high-quality center speaker, capable of reproducing dialogue with precision and integrating seamlessly into a multichannel system composed of other Cabasse speakers.
What are the differences between the tabletop, floor-stand, and wall-mounted versions?
The transducer and acoustic performance are identical. Only the support system differs: the tabletop base allows the speaker to sit on furniture, the floor stand raises it from the floor, and the wall-mounted version incorporates a mounting plate. Weight varies slightly between versions (6.5 kg on base, 7.5 kg wall-mounted) due to the included accessories.
Is the Baltic 5 compatible with the Cabasse multiroom system?
It has no built-in wireless functions as it is a passive loudspeaker. However, when paired with The Pearl Sub, it becomes part of a complete 2.1 system with Wi‑Fi streaming, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2 compatibility and access to online music services. Cabasse’s StreamCONTROL multiroom system then becomes available.
