Audio Technica AT-LP7X
Overview
After the success of the AT-LP7 launched in 2018, Audio-Technica is renewing its flagship belt-drive turntable with the AT-LP7X. This evolution preserves the original philosophy—an entirely manual turntable designed for precision and modularity—while bringing targeted improvements to the platter, chassis geometry, and compatibility with a wide range of cartridges.
A plinth designed for silence
The AT-LP7X is built on a 40 mm-thick MDF chassis, a material known for its natural damping properties. This mass limits resonance phenomena in the low-frequency range and provides a stable base for the arm-and-platter assembly. Four hefty feet, equipped with internal springs, isolate the structure from vibrations transmitted by the floor or furniture. Their height is adjustable, allowing the turntable to be leveled on most surfaces.
The power supply has been externalized: AC-to-DC conversion takes place outside the chassis, in a separate power adapter. This configuration reduces electromagnetic interference that could affect the cartridge’s sensitive signal.
An acrylic platter that dispenses with a mat
The AT-LP7X debuts a 20 mm high-density acrylic platter, replacing the POM (polyoxymethylene) model of its predecessor. Acrylic has acoustic properties close to those of vinyl itself: vibrations are gradually dissipated instead of bouncing back toward the record. The substantial thickness also provides high rotational inertia, stabilizing speed and reducing micro-fluctuations. According to Audio-Technica, no platter mat is required: the record rests directly on the acrylic.
The belt drive relies on a DC servo motor decoupled from the chassis by rubber bushings. An optical sensor continuously monitors rotational speed and corrects any deviations. Wow and flutter remain below 0.1% (weighted).
The J-shaped tonearm, a heritage from the 1960s–70s
The aluminum tonearm reprises the characteristic J-shape of vintage Audio-Technica turntables. This geometry reduces tracking error, especially at the end of the record where distortion tends to increase. The arm pivots on a dual-gimbal bearing system with ball bearings, ensuring minimal friction as it tracks the groove.
Vertical tracking angle (VTA) is easily adjusted via a rotating collar at the base of the arm mount, lockable with a small lever. Tracking force and anti-skate are also adjustable, with the latter covering an extended range up to 4 g. The effective arm length is 247 mm, with a tracking error angle under 2°.
A cartridge ready to evolve
The AT-LP7X comes fitted with the AT-VM95E BK cartridge, a black version of the AT-VM95E, pre-mounted on an AT-LT10 headshell. This dual moving magnet (VM) cartridge uses a 0.3 × 0.7 mil elliptical stylus, a profile that offers a good balance between fine detail retrieval and tolerance of less-than-perfect records.
One of this turntable’s key strengths is its compatibility with the full range of VM95 styli. Swapping from an elliptical stylus to a MicroLine or Shibata model takes just a few seconds, without removing the cartridge or changing mechanical settings. For those who want to install another cartridge, the turntable accepts cartridge/headshell combinations from 14 to 19.5 g without an additional counterweight, from 17.5 to 23.5 g with the included 16 g light counterweight, or from 22 to 28.5 g with the optional 32 g heavy counterweight.
A phono preamp for every setup
The built-in preamp is highly versatile: it supports both MM cartridges (36 dB RIAA gain) and MC cartridges (56 dB RIAA gain). A switch on the rear panel lets you toggle between phono output (4 mV) and line output (252 mV), depending on whether you use an external preamp or not. This flexibility allows direct connection to active speakers or to an amplifier with no phono input, while preserving the option to upgrade later with a dedicated phono stage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a platter mat necessary?
Audio-Technica states that the AT-LP7X’s acrylic platter does not require a mat: the record rests directly on the acrylic. Some users still prefer to add a cork or felt mat for aesthetic reasons or out of habit, but this is not required for proper operation of the turntable.
Can it play 78 RPM records?
No. The AT-LP7X offers only two speeds: 33⅓ and 45 rpm. Playing 78 rpm shellac records would also require a cartridge and stylus specifically designed for those wider grooves.
Is the dust cover hinged?
The dust cover is not mounted on hinges. It simply sits on the chassis and must be fully removed to handle records. Audio-Technica recommends removing it during listening to avoid vibrations.
How do you switch from an MM to an MC cartridge?
The built-in preamp supports both types. A switch on the back of the chassis lets you select MM or MC mode. You then just need to install the MC cartridge of your choice (within the compatible weight range) and adjust tracking force according to the cartridge manufacturer’s recommendations.
What are the main differences between the AT-LP7X and the AT-LP7?
The AT-LP7X uses a high-density acrylic platter (the LP7 used POM), a new low-friction thermoplastic bearing, optimized chassis geometry, and an extended anti-skate range. The supplied cartridge changes from the VM520EB to the AT-VM95E BK on an AT-LT10 headshell, offering direct compatibility with the entire VM95 stylus range.
Can an external preamp be used?
Yes. The Phono/Line switch on the rear allows you to disable the built-in preamp and connect the turntable to an external phono stage via the phono output.
