ArtSound’s MDC6.2 meets this challenge with a flush-mount speaker boasting IP66 certification, capable of operating just as well under a weather‑exposed veranda as in a steam‑saturated hammam. This revised version of the MDC6 gains 3 dB of sensitivity and adopts a dedicated dome tweeter for more precise high‑frequency reproduction.

A design built for extreme conditions

The MDC6.2’s enclosure is molded in one piece from ABS, a technique that eliminates junction points where moisture could seep in. The front grille in corrosion‑treated aluminum protects the drivers while maintaining a refined look, available in white or black depending on the desired integration.

The IP66 rating guarantees complete sealing: the first digit (6) indicates full protection against dust, the second (6) resistance to powerful water jets. In practice, the speaker withstands direct exposure to rain, salty sea spray, or splashes from a swimming pool. The specified operating range extends from −20 °C to +105 °C, covering both winter frost and the temperatures reached in a sauna.

Two complementary drivers

The 5.25‑inch (133 mm) woofer uses a polypropylene cone reinforced with mica particles. This composite improves cone rigidity without adding weight to the diaphragm, limiting distortion and ensuring stable behavior regardless of ambient humidity.

The 13 mm PEI (polyetherimide) dome tweeter with neodymium magnet takes over for the upper part of the spectrum. Compared to the original MDC6’s dual‑cone system, this dedicated tweeter delivers more even dispersion and better definition on voices and acoustic instruments.

The 89 dB sensitivity (±2 dB at 1 W/1 m) allows for a comfortable sound level with modest amplification. ArtSound recommends between 10 and 50 W per channel into an 8 Ω load.

Frequency response and natural limits

The frequency range extends from 100 Hz to 20 kHz. This 100 Hz low‑end limit clearly positions the MDC6.2 as a satellite speaker: mids and highs are reproduced with clarity, but deep bass is not on the menu. For background music on a terrace or ambient sound in a spa, this behavior is perfectly adequate. For more critical music listening or a full home‑cinema setup, adding a subwoofer will be beneficial.

The recommended coverage of 40 m² corresponds to stereo diffusion with two speakers. In a larger or highly absorbent space (textile furnishings, vegetation), adding extra pairs will maintain consistent sound pressure.

Usage environments

The MDC6.2 naturally finds its place in damp or exposed areas: bathrooms, indoor pools, covered patios, verandas, and pool houses. Its marine compatibility makes it a credible option for installations on boats or along the coastline, where salt accelerates corrosion of conventional equipment.

For standard indoor use (living room, open kitchen), speakers from ArtSound’s Happi or X-tended range will often be preferable: their non‑sealed design allows for a wider frequency response and generally lower pricing. The MDC6.2 remains relevant if the environment presents a risk of moisture, even occasional.
