Four generations of Reference speakers have shaped Canton’s reputation in the high‑end segment. This 2023 version marks a clear aesthetic break with its predecessors: angular lines have given way to organic curves, while overall size has been reduced. The Reference 7, the smallest floorstander in the series, concentrates the line’s technologies into a format suited to rooms of 15 to 30 m². Each speaker still weighs 33 kg, a sign of its dense construction.
Black diaphragms born from an electrochemical process
The “K” suffix of the previous generation signaled the arrival of ceramic in the diaphragms. Canton has taken this approach further with BCT (Black Ceramic Tungsten) technology. The process converts around 25% of an aluminum cone’s molecular structure into ceramic via an electrolytic bath, then enriches it with tungsten particles. The diaphragm turns black on both sides during this conversion. This treatment increases rigidity while keeping weight low and improving internal damping.
The two 154 mm woofers and the 174 mm midrange driver benefit from this technology. The 25 mm dome tweeter uses a black ceramic aluminum oxide (BC) diaphragm, mounted in an asymmetrical waveguide that optimizes horizontal dispersion.
A cabinet designed using numerical simulation
The multilayer cabinet does away with all parallel walls. The sides curve towards the rear, the top is rounded, and the sculpted front baffle is machined on a 5‑axis CNC machine. This geometry reduces edge diffraction and limits internal standing waves. Computer‑calculated bracing reinforces the structure without making it excessively heavy.
The metal base, separated from the body by two uprights, creates the illusion of a floating column. These uprights form the Bass‑Guide: an approximately 2.5 cm slot running from front to back through which air from the bass‑reflex system escapes. This indirect down‑firing design avoids the placement issues associated with a traditional rear port while maintaining bass extension down to a claimed 23 Hz.
The available finishes reflect three decorative sensibilities: matte satin white (fingerprint‑free), high‑gloss piano black (12 coats of lacquer sanded and polished), and walnut with a fine‑pore matte treatment.
3‑way configuration and crossover with selected components
The midrange driver, placed above the tweeter rather than below it as per Canton tradition, covers a wide band from 190 Hz to 3200 Hz. This layout brings the acoustic point source closer to ear height. The two woofers operate in parallel below 190 Hz in a dedicated volume.
The passive crossover uses air‑core inductors, low‑loss metal oxide resistors, and film capacitors. The midrange and bass driver surrounds feature a dual‑roll profile that allows for large excursions while maintaining precise cone control.
Room‑matching adjustments
On the rear, above the terminal block, two RC (Room Compensation) switches allow you to adjust the midrange and treble levels in 1.5 dB steps. This ±1.5 dB leeway on each band helps compensate for rooms that are too damped or too reverberant, or adapt the sound to personal taste. In the neutral (0) position, the frequency response remains linear across a wide range.
The WBT nextgen™ terminals accept banana plugs, spades, and bare wire. The bi‑wiring configuration physically separates the bass and mid/treble paths; gold‑plated copper jumpers are supplied for single‑wire use. This industrial‑grade connector system ensures long‑lasting, oxidation‑free contact.
Placement and amplification
Measurements show a very flat response between 200 Hz and 8 kHz, with a slight rise in the treble between 8 and 12 kHz that disappears off‑axis at 30°. Canton’s recommendation: minimal toe‑in, or none at all, to achieve optimal tonal balance and smoother highs. The sweet spot is generous for such a compact floorstander.
The 4‑ohm impedance does not drop to critical values, making the Reference 7 compatible with most quality integrated or separate amplifiers. The 87.5 dB sensitivity, however, calls for a minimum of power to unleash its dynamic potential (160 W nominal, 320 W musical peak). In practice, an amplifier capable of delivering 80 to 150 W into 4 ohms is a good starting point.
Stereo use and home cinema integration
The Reference series includes a center speaker, a bookshelf model (Reference 9), larger floorstanders (Reference 5, 3, 2, 1), and an active subwoofer. All share the same sound signature and aesthetics, making it easy to build a cohesive multichannel system. The Reference 7 can serve as main front speakers in a versatile living room where music listening goes hand in hand with movie watching.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a break‑in period before reaching optimal sound quality?
Canton recommends around twenty hours of listening at moderate volume to soften the suspensions. After this period, the BCT diaphragms reach their nominal behavior, with smoother upper‑bass/midrange and more natural transients.
Do the RC switches affect the response across the entire frequency range?
No. They act only on the midrange (via the 174 mm driver) and the treble (via the tweeter). The bass range remains unchanged regardless of the selected position.
Can the Reference 7 be used without the base?
The base is an integral part of the acoustic system (Bass‑Guide). Removing it would eliminate the bass‑reflex port and degrade low‑frequency performance.
What type of cable should be used for bi‑wiring?
Two pairs of cables with sufficient cross‑section (2.5 mm² minimum for lengths under 5 m) are suitable. The benefit of bi‑wiring depends on the quality of the amplifier and the rest of the system; in single‑wire configuration with the supplied jumpers, performance remains high.
