Canton PRO X.3: a compact speaker for sheltered indoor and outdoor use
Small in size, the PRO X.3 is part of Canton’s universal range. This two-way bass-reflex speaker is designed to adapt to a variety of environments: covered terraces, cellars, conservatories, bathrooms, as well as home cinema or multiroom systems. The German manufacturer has equipped it with moisture protection and a reinforced cabinet, while maintaining a sound signature that stays true to its hi-fi standards.
Discreet format and flexible installation options
With dimensions of 12 × 19.5 × 13 cm and a weight of 1.7 kg, the PRO X.3 is easy to position anywhere. Canton supplies a U-shaped mounting bracket that allows wall mounting, ceiling installation, or angled placement depending on your needs. Once installed, the speaker can pivot by almost 90° to either side to adjust the sound direction.
A safety cable is included with each unit. This precaution, mandatory in commercial or public environments, is also reassuring at home when installing the speaker high up above a passageway.
The rubberized plastic cabinet is impact-resistant. Two finishes are available: black seidenmatt (silk matte) or satin white, both neutral enough to blend into most décors.
Drivers and acoustic design
The PRO X.3 features a 25 mm textile dome tweeter and a 110 mm mid-bass driver whose aluminium cone is surrounded by a Wave-Surround suspension, an in-house technology that Canton uses across several of its ranges. The aim is to reduce distortion and improve cone excursion at high volume.
The bass-reflex system extends the low-end response down to 45 Hz according to the manufacturer’s data. This figure is somewhat optimistic given the cabinet volume, but the bass remains audible for a speaker of this size. The crossover frequency between the two drivers is set at 2,500 Hz.
The 87 dB sensitivity (2.83 V/1 m) requires an amplifier capable of delivering a bit of power to reach high sound levels outdoors, where sound disperses quickly. Canton specifies a continuous power handling of 50 W and a peak power of 100 W.
Outdoor use: what you need to know
Canton describes the PRO X.3 as a “moisture-proof” speaker, meaning it is protected against humidity. This does not mean it can be left exposed to direct rain or prolonged frost. User feedback confirms that installation under an awning, pergola, or eave offers the best guarantee of long-term durability.
For uncovered outdoor use or in regions where temperatures regularly drop below zero, other more waterproof solutions exist on the market, but they are generally more expensive and often less capable acoustically at comparable volume levels.
Integration into an audio system
The 8 Ω impedance makes the PRO X.3 compatible with virtually all hi-fi amplifiers and AV receivers. It can be used as a surround speaker, as a satellite in a 5.1 or 7.1 system, or simply to provide sound in an additional room via a zone B output.
Canton recommends adding a subwoofer for demanding listening sessions or higher volume levels. The brand’s range includes several models such as the Power Sub 8 or Power Sub 10, but any active subwoofer with an adjustable crossover frequency will do.
The binding posts accept standard-gauge cables. Users report that excessively thick cable can be difficult to fit into the terminals provided, so it’s best to stick to 2.5 mm² or less.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the PRO X.3 stay outside all year round?
Canton has designed it for use in sheltered outdoor spaces. Prolonged exposure to direct rain or below-freezing temperatures can damage the components. Under a roof overhang or pergola, it should make it through the seasons without issue.
Which amplifier should I choose for this speaker?
An amplifier capable of delivering between 30 and 80 W per channel into 8 Ω is sufficient. Outdoors, where sound disperses, having a bit of extra power in reserve is always useful. Entry- and mid-range AV receivers are perfectly suitable.
Is the PRO X.3 sold individually or in pairs?
It is generally sold individually, allowing you to buy exactly the number of speakers needed for a custom installation.
Can it be used as a ceiling speaker in a Dolby Atmos system?
Yes, the supplied bracket allows ceiling mounting. Its adjustable orientation lets you direct the sound toward the listening area. It is not “Dolby Enabled” certified, but it works perfectly as a height effect channel in a conventional Atmos setup.
Is a subwoofer essential?
For background listening or light ambient music, the PRO X.3 is sufficient on its own. For movies or more engaged music listening, an active subwoofer will provide the low-frequency foundation that this compact format cannot fully deliver.
