Overview

Eight centimeters. That’s the depth Canton managed to keep while fitting two 128 mm drivers, a 25 mm tweeter, and a passive radiator into a 3.5 kg enclosure. The GLE 15 PRO SS2 borrows the design cues of the GLE S2 series, the German manufacturer’s best-selling entry-level line for several years, and adds a swivel mount that opens up new installation possibilities.

A format designed to blend into the décor

The GLE 15 PRO SS2 measures 30 cm high and 17 cm wide. Mounted vertically, it works as a stereo speaker or surround channel. Placed horizontally, it serves as a center channel. Its enclosure, finished in matte black or white, features a satin front panel onto which a magnetically attached oval fabric grille is fitted, the visual signature of the GLE S2 range.

The “Pro” version stands out from the standard GLE 15 SS2 model thanks to its universal rear mount. This mounting system allows the speaker to be aimed toward the listening area, whether installed on a wall or ceiling. For Dolby Atmos installations requiring height channels, this adjustable angle is a significant practical advantage.

Black diaphragms inherited from higher series

For the GLE S2, Canton developed a new generation of drivers called ATB, for Aluminium Titanium Black. The process consists of applying a black coating to titanium-aluminum diaphragms, a technique derived from the one used in the Vento and Reference series. The result: rigid, lightweight cones capable of responding quickly to transients without deformation.

The GLE 15 PRO SS2 features a 128 mm ATB mid-bass driver, combined with a passive radiator of the same size positioned on the back of the enclosure. This sealed design with passive radiator replaces the traditional bass-reflex port. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, it extends down to 43 Hz, an impressive figure for such a compact speaker, without the drawbacks of a port (chuffing at high volume, critical placement relative to the wall).

The 25 mm tweeter uses an Aluminium Black (AB) dome with a waveguide redesigned compared to the previous generation. The frequency response extends up to 40 kHz, far beyond the audible spectrum but with potential benefits for phase behavior and perceived naturalness in the high frequencies.

Power and connectivity: practical data

With a sensitivity of 86 dB (2.83 V / 1 m) and a nominal impedance ranging between 4 and 8 ohms, the GLE 15 PRO SS2 requires an amplifier capable of delivering good current. Its nominal power rating of 60 W and music power handling of 110 W make it compatible with most home theater amplifiers on the market, provided they are stable with low-impedance loads.

Crossover frequency between the mid-bass and tweeter is set at 3,000 Hz. The drivers are mounted on reinforced polycarbonate baskets and feature triple-fold Wave surrounds, a technology Canton uses across its entire range to improve excursion linearity.

Multiple possible configurations

A pair of GLE 15 PRO SS2 can form a discreet stereo system in an office or living room where space is at a premium. In a home theater setup, they work well as side or rear surrounds, with the advantage of being precisely aimed at the listeners.

Mounted on the ceiling, they handle the Atmos height channels. Canton also offers in the same range the more compact GLE 10 PRO SS2 (30 × 17 × 9 cm), which can supplement the setup for upper channels when ceiling space is limited.

Pairing with other GLE S2 models is a natural choice: GLE 70, 80, or 90 floorstanding speakers at the front, a GLE 50 center channel, and Power Sub 8, 10, or 12 subwoofers. Canton designed this range so that tonal balance remains consistent from one model to another.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the GLE 15 PRO SS2 and the standard GLE 15 SS2?

The Pro version includes a universal swivel mount that lets you aim the speaker in the desired direction and enables ceiling mounting. The standard model has a fixed, integrated wall mount. Acoustic specifications are identical between the two versions.

Can this speaker be used as a center channel?

Yes. Installed horizontally, the GLE 15 PRO SS2 can fulfill this role. However, Canton also offers a dedicated center channel, the GLE 50 Center SS2, optimized for dialogue reproduction with a three-driver configuration.

What is the minimum recommended amplifier?

An amplifier capable of delivering at least 50 to 80 W into 4 ohms per channel will be sufficient for moderate listening levels. To fully exploit the speaker’s dynamic capabilities in a medium to large room, aim for 100 W or more.

Does the fabric grille affect the sound?

Canton uses an acoustically neutral fabric. The difference in sound with and without the grille remains marginal. The choice is therefore mainly aesthetic.

Can this speaker be combined with models from other Canton ranges?

It is technically possible, but the tonal balance of the ATB drivers in the GLE S2 series differs from that of previous or higher series. For optimal consistency in a multichannel system, it is better to stay within the same generation.

How does the passive radiator work?

It is a driver without a magnetic motor that resonates under the effect of internal cabinet pressure. It extends the low-frequency response without requiring a port, which makes placement close to a wall easier.
