Overview
The GLE series has long been the most popular range from German manufacturer Canton. With the S2 generation, launched in summer 2025, the drivers have been completely redesigned using technologies from the higher-end Vento and Reference ranges. The GLE 20 S2, the smallest model in the series, brings these improvements into a 30 cm-tall bookshelf format. It can operate on its own in a stereo setup or be integrated into a multichannel home cinema system.
Drivers derived from higher ranges
The core of the GLE 20 S2 lies in its drivers, developed specifically for this generation. The 154 mm woofer/midrange uses an ATB (Aluminium Titan Black) cone, an aluminium-titanium alloy treated with a chemical process that increases its surface and rigidity while keeping weight to a minimum. This type of cone had until now only been used in Canton’s more expensive series.
The 25 mm tweeter also adopts a new design. Whereas the previous generation used a flat aluminium-manganese dome, the S2 moves to a high-profile dome with an Aluminium Black diaphragm. The oscillating system, derived from the Vento and Reference ranges, pushes the membrane’s resonance point beyond 30 kHz. In practical terms, this reduces distortion in the audible frequencies and allows extension up to 40,000 Hz.
An integrated waveguide on the tweeter broadens sound dispersion. The stereo image remains coherent even when you move off the listening axis, a valuable advantage when the speaker is used as a surround channel in a multichannel system.
A discreet format for varied uses
With its 17 cm width, 29.5 cm height, and 26 cm depth, the GLE 20 S2 fits easily on a desk, in a bookcase, or on a TV stand. The rear-firing bass-reflex port does, however, require a few centimetres of space from the wall so the bass can breathe properly.
The sensitivity of 86.5 dB (2.83 V/1 m) and the 4 to 8 ohm impedance make it compatible with most hi-fi amplifiers and AV receivers on the market. With 70 watts nominal power (130 W peak), it can reach high sound levels without excessive compression, even if the compact internal volume naturally limits the very lowest bass. Canton recommends adding a subwoofer for demanding home cinema use.
The dedicated LS 660 stands (sold separately) allow floor installation at an elevated position. The speaker can also be combined with other models from the GLE series to build a 5.1 system or larger: for example, GLE 70 S2 or GLE 90 S2 at the front, a GLE 50 Center S2 in the middle, and a pair of GLE 20 S2 as surrounds.
Construction and finishes
The cabinet does not use the single-piece construction of the higher ranges, but the build quality is still meticulous. The front baffle, separate from the main body, is painted in a matte satin finish (black or white depending on the chosen version). The joins between the different elements are clean, and the edges are well executed.
Four finishes are available: black, white, macassar (dark wood), and walnut. The latter, introduced with the S2 generation, is only available on certain models in the series, including the GLE 20. The oval magnetic grilles, made from acoustically neutral fabric, attach with no visible mounting system and match the cabinet’s clean, minimalist design.
The binding posts accept banana plugs, spades, or bare wire. Wiring is single-wire (a single pair of terminals per speaker).

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a powerful amplifier to drive the GLE 20 S2?
No. The 86.5 dB sensitivity and 4 to 8 ohm impedance allow you to achieve a good sound level with an integrated amplifier delivering 30 to 50 W per channel. A more powerful model is only useful for large rooms or very high listening volumes.
Can the speaker be used near a wall?
The rear bass-reflex port benefits from at least 10 to 15 cm of clearance. Against a wall, bass may become more prominent but less controlled. An open-backed shelf or an open TV stand works well.
Can I use the GLE 20 S2 without a subwoofer?
Yes, for music listening in a medium-sized room. The specified response goes down to 42 Hz, which covers most of the musical spectrum. For home cinema with low-frequency effects or for electronic music, a subwoofer will effectively extend the low end.
Which stands are compatible with the GLE 20 S2?
Canton offers the LS 660 stands, specifically designed for the compact models in the GLE series. Any support with suitable dimensions (a top plate of at least 17 × 26 cm) can also be used.
Do the magnetic grilles affect the sound?
According to Canton, the fabric used is acoustically neutral. In practice, the effect is minimal. Removing them exposes the drivers and slightly alters treble dispersion, but the difference remains subtle when listening.
Is the GLE 20 S2 compatible with Canton Smart systems?
Yes. It can be connected to the Smart Amp 5.1 (S2), Canton’s wireless multichannel amplifier, for integration into a multiroom or Dolby Atmos home cinema system.
