Overview

Two 174 mm drivers, a dome tweeter, and a footprint that’s no wider than 19 cm: the GLE 70 S2 follows the same recipe that has made the GLE series successful for over twenty years, with a technical update introduced in July 2025. Canton has brought technologies from its higher ranges (Vento, Reference) into a format designed for modest-sized living rooms.

Three drivers for a 2.5-way configuration

The GLE 70 S2 stands out within the series thanks to its architecture. Whereas the GLE 80 S2 and GLE 90 S2 use a classic 3-way design with woofers dedicated to low frequencies, the GLE 70 S2 operates in 2.5-way mode: the two 174 mm drivers share the work differently. The lower driver focuses on low frequencies, while the upper driver handles the midrange and reinforces the bass. The crossover points are set at 300 Hz and 3,200 Hz.

This configuration offers a concrete advantage: vocal reproduction gains in precision, since a single driver handles the frequency range where most of the vocal spectrum lies. The crossover frequencies were chosen to avoid interference between drivers in this critical zone.

ATB cones and Wave surrounds: what’s new with the S2 generation

The ATB (Aluminum Titanium Black) label refers to the treatment applied to the woofer and midrange driver cones. A black layer covers the aluminum-titanium alloy, slightly altering the mechanical properties of the cone while visually aligning it with the high-end series. Canton claims an optimized stiffness-to-weight ratio, allowing the driver to respond quickly to transients without coloration.

The triple-fold surrounds (Wave surround) allow for significant cone excursion while maintaining linear behavior. On a speaker of this size, this is a key parameter for low-frequency reproduction: the cone can move far enough to displace the necessary air without causing a noticeable increase in distortion.

The 25 mm AB (Aluminum Black) tweeter uses the same surface treatment principle. Its integrated waveguide controls high-frequency dispersion. Canton specifies a response up to 40,000 Hz, which goes well beyond the audible spectrum but contributes to the reproduction of instrumental harmonics.

Size and placement in the room

At 95 cm tall and 19 cm wide, the GLE 70 S2 remains discreet once installed. The 15 kg weight is moderate for a floorstanding speaker, making it easier to move while you search for the optimal position.

The bass-reflex port exits at the rear of the cabinet. This Back-Fire design requires a minimum distance from the back wall, generally between 20 and 40 cm depending on the room’s acoustics. Placed too close to the wall, the speaker will produce bloated, less precise bass. The four integrated feet provide decoupling from the floor and a stable base.

According to Canton, the GLE 70 S2 is suitable for rooms of around 15 to 30 m². Beyond that, the GLE 80 S2 or GLE 90 S2 models take over, with their additional woofers and larger cabinet volume.

Construction and available finishes

The cabinet is assembled at Canton’s factory in Tachov, Czech Republic. The front baffle has a satin finish (white or black depending on the version), while the sides are covered with textured vinyl. Three decor options are available: black, white, and macassar (an exotic wood with pronounced grain).

The oval fabric grilles are magnetically attached and hide the drivers. Their shape follows the front baffle without any visible frame. The terminal block accepts banana plugs or bare wire up to a certain diameter, in single-wiring configuration only.

Integration into a multichannel system

The GLE 70 S2 can be used as a stereo pair or as front speakers in a home cinema system. Canton designed the GLE S2 series to allow coherent combinations: the GLE 50 S2 center speaker shares the same ATB drivers, ensuring tonal consistency across the three front channels. The compact GLE 20 S2 models or the in-wall GLE 10 Pro S2 speakers complete the rear.

With an impedance of 4–8 ohms and a sensitivity of 89.5 dB, the GLE 70 S2 is compatible with most hi-fi amplifiers or home cinema amplifiers on the market. An amp delivering between 50 and 150 watts per channel will cover most home use cases. Canton’s Smart Amp 5.1 can directly drive an entire GLE setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amplifier power should I plan for?

An amplifier delivering 50 to 100 watts into 4–8 ohms is sufficient for most listening situations. The high sensitivity (89.5 dB) allows you to reach comfortable sound levels without overtaxing the electronics. Above 150 watts, make sure to keep the volume at a reasonable level to avoid damaging the drivers.

Does the GLE 70 S2 need break-in?

Canton does not specify an official break-in period. As with most speakers, the surrounds may loosen up slightly after a few dozen hours of use, which mainly affects the bass register. The differences remain subtle.

Can the GLE 70 S2 be placed on a piece of furniture instead of on the floor?

The design is intended for floor installation on its integrated feet. Placed on furniture, the speaker would lose the benefit of decoupling, and the tweeter would likely end up too high relative to the ears of a seated listener. Dedicated stands are available if floor placement is not an option.

What’s the difference compared to the older GLE 70 (2021 series)?

The S2 version adopts ATB drivers with black cones, a redesigned waveguide on the tweeter, and updated finishes. The acoustic architecture remains similar (2.5-way bass-reflex), but the components have been optimized. The stated sensitivity and frequency response are identical on paper.

Is a subwoofer necessary?

The frequency response extends down to 25 Hz, which covers most of the musical spectrum and movie soundtracks. A subwoofer will add extra energy in the very low end and relieve the woofers during high-level passages. For standard music listening, the GLE 70 S2 can be entirely self-sufficient.
