Hi-Res Audio

Overview

The Prestige series broadens access to the Michi range without giving up the design standards that built the brand’s reputation. The Q430 takes the ESS ES9028PRO converter from its elder sibling, the Q5, but adopts a more compact format with a front-loading tray rather than top loading. A dedicated CD player, with no extra functions, focused on conversion quality and quiet operation.

A floating mechanism for stable playback

The Q430 uses a floating loading tray that decouples the disc from vibrations transmitted by the chassis or the environment. This mechanical suspension contributes to playback stability and limits tracking errors, a sensitive point on traditional CD mechanisms.

The tray slides smoothly. Rotel has abandoned the Q5’s top loading here (which required vertical clearance and access from above the unit) in favor of simpler rack integration. The whole unit remains quiet in use.

Aluminum chassis and glass front panel

The machined aluminum enclosure features beveled edges and a matte black finish. The front panel incorporates a glass panel that protects the color TFT display. This display shows track information (number, duration, elapsed time) and can retrieve album artwork via the Ethernet connection, provided the unit is connected to the local network.

The dimensions remain compact: 431 × 148 × 385 mm for 8.8 kg. It is noticeably less imposing than the Q5 and its 23.5 kg, a difference explained by the Q430’s simplified power supply (a single block versus two toroidal transformers on the higher model).

Differential conversion with the ESS ES9028PRO

The ESS SABRE ES9028PRO converter is an eight-channel chip. Michi uses it here in a balanced differential configuration: four channels per audio channel, making it possible to drive the XLR outputs directly without an additional conversion stage.

The stated measurements reflect this careful approach. Total harmonic distortion remains below 0.0006%. The signal-to-noise ratio reaches 120 dB on the RCA output and 125 dB on the XLR output (IHF-A weighting). Channel separation exceeds 105 dB at 10 kHz on the unbalanced outputs, 110 dB on the balanced ones. Dynamic range is greater than 99 dB.

These figures place the Q430 among the quietest CD players in its category. The very low noise floor favors the reproduction of fine details and ambience, especially on acoustic recordings or spacious recordings.

Power supply designed and manufactured in-house

Rotel manufactures its own transformers and power supply blocks, a constant across the entire Michi range. The Q430 benefits from several isolated regulation stages that filter mains noise before it reaches the audio circuits. This “ultra-quiet” power supply (in the manufacturer’s words) contributes to the low measured distortion level.

Power consumption in operation reaches 25 W. In standby, it drops below 0.5 W.

Analog and digital outputs

The rear panel offers two pairs of analog outputs: RCA (unbalanced, 1.96 V, 100 Ω) and XLR (balanced, 4.2 V, 2 kΩ). A digital coaxial output allows the Q430 to be used as a CD transport if you prefer to leave conversion to an external DAC.

No digital inputs on this model. The internal DAC is reserved for disc playback. This is a notable difference from the Q5, which accepts external sources via USB-B, coaxial, and optical.

Supported formats are limited to Red Book (16-bit/44.1 kHz audio CD), CD-R, and CD-RW. SACD is not supported.

Home automation integration and remote control

The Q430 has RS232 and Ethernet ports for integration into automation systems (Control4, Crestron, Savant, etc.). A 12 V trigger input allows synchronized power-on with an amplifier. The USB port on the rear panel is used only for firmware updates and powering accessories, not for audio playback.

The included Michi remote control works with all devices in the range. It allows you to control several Michi components from a single handset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Q430 play SACDs?

No. The player is limited to audio CD (Red Book), CD-R, and CD-RW formats. The SACD layer of hybrid discs is not accessible.

Can a streamer or computer be connected to the internal DAC?

No. The Q430 does not have any digital inputs. Its ES9028PRO converter processes only the signal from the integrated CD player. To use the DAC with other sources, you need to turn to the Q5.

What are the main differences with the Q5?

The Q5 uses a top-loading mechanism, weighs nearly three times as much (23.5 kg), includes a dual power supply with toroidal transformers, and accepts external digital sources (USB-B up to 32-bit/384 kHz, coaxial and optical up to 24-bit/192 kHz, DSD and MQA compatibility). The Q430 adopts a front-loading tray, a simplified power supply, and focuses solely on disc playback.
