Eight centimeters per side, 430 grams on the scale, and yet 180° sound dispersion. The MSX 10 takes up the formula that made the Minx range famous, of which it is the direct successor, while adding a fourth-generation BMR driver, contemporary matte finishes, and a redesigned cabinet. Cambridge Audio sells it individually, which leaves complete freedom to build a stereo system, a multichannel setup, or a discreet addition in a second room.

A BMR driver rather than a conventional speaker

The MSX 10 is built around a single 57 mm full-range driver using BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) technology, developed by Tectonic Audio Labs. The principle: the diaphragm operates in pistonic mode in the bass and midrange (like a traditional speaker) while propagating treble frequencies through bending waves, in the manner of a flat panel. The practical result is very wide sound dispersion, close to 180°, which considerably reduces dependence on a single listening position. You can move around the room without losing the coherence of the sound reproduction, a real advantage when the speakers are placed high up, wall-mounted, or used as effect channels in a home theater system.

This fourth generation of the BMR driver gains in efficiency and treble extension compared with the previous versions fitted in the Minx Min 10 and Min 11. Sensitivity rises to 86 dB (versus 85 dB for the Min 11), and the admissible power range extends from 25 to 200 W, which is considerable for a driver of this size. Powering the MSX 10 with a generous amplifier, used at a low level, helps reduce distortion and achieve cleaner sound than with a small amplifier pushed to its limits.

A rigid cabinet designed for its dimensions

The cubic cabinet of the MSX 10 integrates cast aluminum reinforcements that stiffen the structure and limit unwanted vibrations. In such a small volume, the slightest enclosure resonance colors the sound: the rigidity of the chassis is therefore a critical parameter. The so-called “long-excursion” design of the driver partly compensates for the low internal volume by allowing the diaphragm to move more, which improves output in the lower part of the spectrum.

The stated frequency response starts at 150 Hz. It is straightforward: below that, there is no bass. Cambridge Audio does not try to hide it and recommends pairing it with a subwoofer (MSX Sub 200 or Sub 300) for any serious music listening or for home theater. Setting the subwoofer’s low-pass filter around 150 Hz is, moreover, the logical crossover point.

Flexible installation, standard wiring

Each MSX 10 is supplied with a wall mount and a set of rubber feet for placement on furniture or a shelf. The terminals accept 4 mm banana plugs, a hi-fi standard that avoids any proprietary wiring. It is a detail, but it guarantees compatibility with any stereo amplifier or home theater AV receiver on the market.

The dimensions (79 × 79 × 97 mm) allow the MSX 10 to fit just about anywhere: on a desk, in a bookcase, on the wall behind a sofa, on the ceiling in a Dolby Atmos configuration. The featherweight 430-gram weight simplifies wall mounting. Cambridge Audio also offers optional pivoting mounts and table stands for more precise positioning.

Possible configurations and limitations to know

The MSX 10 is a passive speaker. No built-in amplification, no Bluetooth, no Wi-Fi. It needs an amplifier or AV receiver to work. In stereo, a pair of MSX 10s paired with a subwoofer forms a compact system that fits on a shelf. In home theater, four or six MSX 10s can handle the surround channels and height channels (Atmos), with the front speakers entrusted to larger models such as the MSX 20 or conventional bookshelf speakers.

The 8 Ω impedance makes the MSX 10 compatible with virtually all amplifiers. As for integration with a subwoofer, the amplifier needs to have a subwoofer output or pre-outs; otherwise, the crossover between satellites and subwoofer will be difficult to optimize.

Two finishes are available: matte black and matte white. The move from the Minx range’s glossy lacquer to matte is a deliberate aesthetic choice, more in tune with current furniture trends.

What changes compared with the Minx

The MSX 10 succeeds the Minx Min 10, Min 11, and Min 12. The dimensions and weight remain almost identical, so compatibility with existing wall mounts is likely. The changes concern the BMR driver (fourth generation, with better efficiency), the finish (matte instead of glossy), the cabinet (aluminum reinforcements), and the admissible power range, significantly widened compared with the original Min 10 (25-200 W versus 15-50 W). The frequency response rises slightly (150 Hz versus 140 Hz for the Min 10), which probably reflects recalibration rather than regression.
