Overview

Storing your vinyl without damaging it, finding records easily, and being able to reorganize everything as the collection grows: that’s the brief HumminGuru set itself with the FlexiCube. This polypropylene cube holds around 70 12-inch records upright, folds flat when empty, and can be stacked or turned into a shelf as needed. A simple format built around one observation: most vinyl crates are either rigid or fragile, rarely both at once.

A cube that folds, stacks, and unfolds

The FlexiCube is a foldable cube measuring 391 × 385 × 385 mm (external dimensions) that, once folded, slips into a closet or under a bed without taking up space. Unfolded, it becomes a rigid crate with walls sturdy enough to hold the weight of 70 upright vinyl records, or around 15 to 20 kg depending on the thickness of the sleeves.

The polypropylene (PP) used is a lightweight, durable plastic that is unaffected by moisture. It’s the same type of material used in professional storage bins. It doesn’t warp under load and can be cleaned with a quick wipe of a sponge. The trade-off is aesthetic: this is a functional crate, not a piece of fine wood furniture. But that’s precisely what allows it to fold.

A locking system that also becomes a shelf

The FlexiCube’s appeal goes beyond a simple storage crate thanks to its interlocking system. The cubes fit into each other (up to three high) via a locking mechanism. Stacked, they form a stable storage column. But they can also be placed on their side to create an open shelf, with the records then accessible from the side, like in a Kallax unit.

This dual configuration (stackable closed crate or modular open shelf) offers real flexibility in layout. A small collection of 100 to 150 records fits in two stacked cubes. A larger collection can occupy a row of three cubes side by side, themselves stacked on two or three levels. The three-cube height limit must be respected: beyond that, stability is no longer guaranteed by the manufacturer.

Access records without twisting yourself up

Access to the vinyl works in two ways depending on the chosen configuration. In stacked crate mode, records are removed from the top. In open shelf mode, you flip through them from the side like in a record store bin. This second option is clearly more comfortable for browsing your collection, but it requires arranging the cubes in a horizontal row rather than a column.

The internal dimensions (341 × 329 × 351 mm) leave enough room to handle sleeves without forcing them. Records with double gatefold sleeves or thick sleeves fit without any issue, but actual capacity then drops below the stated 70: expect more like 55 to 65 records if your collection includes a lot of gatefolds or records in thick protective outer sleeves.

Easier transport and moving

Each cube includes a carrying handle. A simple detail, but a useful one: a crate loaded with vinyl records is heavy, and being able to grip it properly helps avoid unpleasant surprises. The compact cubic format can be handled with one hand when the crate is partially filled, and carried with two hands without difficulty when full.

For moving house or temporary transport (flea market, listening session at a friend’s place), the FlexiCube also works as a transport box. The vinyl records stay upright and secure during the journey. Once you arrive, you just set the cube down and start digging through it.

Modularity and long-term scalability

The FlexiCube’s modular concept works well for keeping up with a growing collection. You start with one cube, add a second when space runs out, then a third. The interlocking system lets you reconfigure the whole setup as you like without tools or permanent fixings.

This gradual approach has a practical advantage: you don’t invest straight away in an oversized piece of furniture. It also has a limit. Beyond 9 cubes (three columns of three), the whole setup becomes bulky and lateral stability relies only on the weight of the records and the cubes fitting into each other, without wall mounting. For a very large collection, a dedicated wooden unit will remain more suitable. The FlexiCube finds its place between a simple cardboard box and a custom hi-fi cabinet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the FlexiCube hold 7-inch (45 rpm) or 10-inch records?

Yes. The internal dimensions are more than sufficient for all common vinyl formats. 7-inch and 10-inch records will stand upright in the cube, but they will not fill it vertically. You may need to support the top with a divider or simply accept that the smaller formats will move around a bit in the remaining space.

What maximum weight can one cube support when other cubes are stacked on top of it?

HumminGuru guarantees stacking up to three cubes. One full cube (around 70 vinyl records) weighs between 15 and 20 kg depending on the sleeves. The bottom cube therefore has to support the load of two full cubes above it, or around 30 to 40 kg. The polypropylene handles this load without deforming.

Are the cubes sold with dividers or separators?

No. The FlexiCube is supplied empty, with no accessories. If you want to organize your records by genre or alphabetical order, you will need to get dividers separately.

Does the cube protect vinyl records from dust?

In stacked closed-crate mode, the records are relatively protected from ambient dust by the cube’s walls. However, the cube has no lid: the top remains open. For long-term storage, protective outer sleeves are still recommended.

Is the FlexiCube compatible with IKEA Kallax units?

No. The FlexiCube’s external dimensions (391 × 385 × 385 mm) are slightly larger than those of a standard Kallax compartment (around 335 × 335 mm opening). The cube does not fit inside a Kallax, but it can be placed on top of it or next to it.
