Hisense 85U7SE, the 85-inch MiniLED at 144 Hz

Moving up to 85 inches changes everything else: viewing distance, the space left for the TV stand, the quality of the sources fed to it. On this diagonal, Hisense installs a MiniLED backlight with 384 zones, a native 144 Hz panel, and an audio system tuned by Devialet, in a chassis 66 mm thick. The 85U7SE succeeds the U7Q in the brand’s European lineup, with VIDAA U9 at the helm.

A 384-zone backlight

The MiniLED principle lies in replacing the few dozen diodes of a conventional backlight with thousands of miniaturized chips, grouped into separately controlled zones. Here, 384 zones are spread across a panel of nearly two square meters, or around fifty square centimeters each. The claimed peak brightness rises to 1300 nits, enough to make a bodywork reflection or an ember stand out in a dark scene.

The trade-off of this partitioning shows up in high-contrast scenes. An isolated bright object on a black background lights up the entire zone around it, and a slight halo appears around it. The phenomenon is most noticeable in a room plunged into darkness, less so in a brightly lit living room. The ambient light sensor continuously adjusts the overall image level, which helps during the day in front of a large window.

Colors covering 90% of DCI-P3

The quantum dot layer broadens the spectrum to 90% of DCI-P3, the reference color space for digital cinema, and the screen is Pantone validated. The saturated reds and deep greens of a recent HDR film therefore come through properly, even if the missing 10% results in a subtle compression of the most extreme shades.

The panel operates in 8 bits assisted by FRC. This technique alternates very quickly between two neighboring shades to simulate a third, and in this way reconstructs the equivalent of 10-bit encoding. The result holds up for the vast majority of content. On a gradient sky or a very slow fade to black, a careful eye may spot slight banding between levels, where a natively 10-bit panel remains smooth.

Dolby Vision and HDR10+ together

Few TVs handle both major HDR formats with dynamic metadata. The 85U7SE supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+ and HDR10+ Adaptive, as well as HDR10 and the HLG used by television channels. The IQ and Adaptive variants use the light sensor to recalculate tone mapping according to the room lighting, a real help on dark films watched in the late afternoon.

Also included are IMAX Enhanced certification, which unlocks masters in the expanded image format on compatible platforms, and Filmmaker Mode, which disables processing and locks the color temperature to the production standard. The Calman Ready label opens the door to automated calibration for anyone with a probe and the corresponding software.

Native 144 Hz for gaming

The panel refreshes natively at 144 Hz, with an HSR mode that pushes to 280 Hz at the cost of reduced resolution. Latency drops to 8 ms in Game mode, and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certification covers VRR and low-latency HDR. ALLM automatically switches the screen to the right mode as soon as a console starts up.

For cinema, MEMC motion compensation inserts calculated frames between the real ones. On a lateral camera pan, sharpness improves. On a film shot at 24 frames per second, the resulting smoothness quickly turns into a video-like look, that soap opera effect which gives the process away. The setting can be adjusted in the menus, and Filmmaker Mode disables it by default.

Four HDMI 2.1 ports, two bandwidth levels

All four inputs carry the HDMI 2.1 label, without offering the same capabilities. HDMI 1 and 2 are limited to 4K 60 Hz with ALLM. HDMI 3 and 4 accept 4K 144 Hz and VRR, and eARC audio return is on HDMI 3.

This distribution requires a bit of planning. A soundbar connected via eARC occupies HDMI 3 and leaves only one 144 Hz port for consoles. Two machines using the maximum refresh rate then require routing the sound differently, via the optical S/PDIF output or through the soundbar’s HDMI. The rest of the connectivity includes one USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0, a headphone jack, an Ethernet port, two antenna inputs, and a Common Interface CI+ slot.

Sound tuned by Devialet

Two 10 W speakers are paired with an integrated 20 W subwoofer, for a total of 40 W, with tuning signed by Devialet. The Room Fitting Tuning function corrects the response according to the TV’s position, against a wall or in a corner. Hi-Concerto lets the internal speakers play in addition to a compatible Hisense soundbar instead of muting them.

Dolby Atmos is decoded, but rendered on a 2.1 configuration without upward-firing speakers. Height information is therefore virtualized, and vertical dimension remains implied. For full spatial reproduction, eARC transmits the Atmos stream intact to a soundbar or amplifier. WiSA SoundSend compatibility also opens the way to wireless speakers.

VIDAA U9 and voice control

Hisense’s in-house system gives access to the VIDAA App Store and places the main streaming applications in direct access on the supplied voice remote. Alexa and Vidaa Voice coexist for voice control. AirPlay 2 lets you send video from an iPhone or a Mac, and screen sharing also works from a PC, tablet, or Android mobile. VIDAA ART turns the panel into a digital display when nobody is watching.

On the TV side, the tuner covers DVB-T2, cable, and DVB-S2 satellite, with Fransat certification and HbbTV 2.0.4 for the channels’ interactive services. PVR recording and timeshift work through a drive connected by USB. Parental control and hotel mode complete the list.
