The ST300 Signature Silver from Atoll Electronique is a device that combines the functions of a network player, digital-to-analog converter, preamplifier, and headphone amplifier. Designed and manufactured in Brécey, Normandy, it is built on a dual-mono architecture inspired by the 400 series and features a 69,000 μF power supply. It is part of a philosophy focused on sound quality, with no unnecessary digital processing.
A Solid Aluminum Front Panel Hiding an Ambitious Architecture
The front of the ST300 Signature immediately commands respect with its 8 mm of brushed aluminum, machined in Lorraine. At the center, the 5-inch color display (800 x 480 pixels) shows album covers, metadata, and technical information with excellent readability. This front panel shares its design with the ST200 Signature, but the rear reveals the ST300’s higher ambitions: high-quality gold-plated connectors, dual analog RCA and XLR outputs, multiple digital inputs, and detachable antennas for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Inside, you’ll find meticulous construction, with each stage having its own linear power supply: 30 VA for digital, 10 VA for the DAC, and an additional 10 VA for the audio circuits. This separation isolates the different sections and prevents mutual interference. The MKP Clarity Cap ESA series coupling capacitors, recognizable by their distinctive red color, reflect the care given to the signal path. Manual assembly at the Brecey factory follows a strict protocol, including point-to-point soldering, individual inspection, and a burn-in period before shipping.
Dual Burr-Brown Conversion and Fully Balanced Processing
The digital heart of the ST300 is based on two Burr-Brown PCM1792 chips, each dedicated to one channel. This dual-mono architecture, absent from the ST200, achieves 132 dB of dynamic range and an equivalent signal-to-noise ratio—figures usually reserved for professional studio equipment. The Cirrus Logic CS8416 circuit handles digital streams up to 192 kHz/24-bit, while native support for DSD (64 and 128) and MQA expands high-resolution playback options.
The output stages use pure class A biasing, with no negative feedback. This topology, more expensive in terms of components and heat dissipation, prioritizes linearity and eliminates crossover distortion. Each channel features four discrete stages assembled from selected transistors. The analog volume control via switched resistors can be bypassed for maximum transparency when the ST300 is connected directly to a power amplifier.
Uncompromising Connectivity for Multiple Sources
The ST300 Signature accepts virtually any imaginable source. On the digital side, four inputs (two coaxial, two optical) allow you to connect a TV, game console, CD transport, or any other device. Two USB-A ports (front and rear) support flash drives and hard disks formatted in FAT32, NTFS, or EXT2/3/4. The two analog RCA inputs integrate a turntable (via external phono preamp) or CD player into the digital ecosystem.
The network section supports DLNA and UPnP protocols via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Roon compatibility, added via firmware update, provides access to this particularly sophisticated music management interface. Streaming services Qobuz, Tidal (with Tidal Connect), Spotify, Deezer, HighResAudio, and thousands of available web radios turn the ST300 into a true contemporary music hub. Bluetooth integration, while limited in quality compared to other sources, makes it easy to listen occasionally from a smartphone.
User Interface and Mobile App: Everyday Ergonomics
The front display shows all relevant information: album cover, title, artist, file format and resolution, volume level. Navigation is done via the included remote control or the Atoll Signature 2 mobile app (iOS and Android). The app turns your tablet or smartphone into a complete control center, with direct access to playlists, favorites, and sources. While the interface is more basic than some competitors, it makes up for it with stability and responsiveness.
The gapless system ensures uninterrupted playback between tracks—a crucial detail for live albums or classical works. Creating and managing playlists is simple from the app. Metadata (tags) are correctly interpreted for all supported formats: FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, WAV, DSD, as well as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WMA for compressed files. The 12V trigger output synchronizes power on/off with an external power amplifier, a particularly relevant setup with the AM300 Signature from the same manufacturer.
