Delighted with the rather warm sound quality of this amplifier, which is also very beautiful, which only adds to its appeal. Perfect with the BR04

The Marantz Stereo 70s is a compact stereo amplifier that combines the characteristics of a classic hi-fi amp with the features of an audio-video receiver. It lets you connect various audio and video sources while preserving the reduced form factor that defines this series.
The Stereo 70s adopts the new aesthetic language introduced by Marantz with its Model series. Its ultra-thin chassis, just 109 mm tall, harmoniously integrates the iconic circular OLED porthole—an enduring symbol of the brand since the 1970s. This golden window displays essential information in a champagne hue that echoes the brand’s classic models.
The symmetrical front panel features two substantial rotary knobs for source selection and volume, flanked by four more discreet controls dedicated to speaker selection, balance, and tone adjustments. These bass and treble controls, increasingly rare on contemporary amplifiers, reflect a philosophy that keeps the listener fully in control of their experience. The speaker selection relay produces a confident, distinctive mechanical click—Marantz could have chosen a quieter component, but this deliberate choice enhances the impression of solidity and precision.
Weighing 8.4 kg, the Stereo 70s remains easy to handle while conveying a reassuring sense of density. Its construction favors carefully selected components over brute mass—a philosophy evident in every detail of the unit.
For the first time in a compact stereo receiver, Marantz integrates its HDAM (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module) technology. Developed in 1992 for the PM-99SE amplifier and CD-15 player, this proprietary design has been a cornerstone of the Marantz sound signature for three decades.
These miniaturized modules replace conventional operational amplifiers with discrete circuits built from meticulously selected components. Positioned strategically between the volume control and the power stage, HDAMs offer a slew rate of 70 to 80 V/µs and an open-loop gain of around 70 dB. This configuration ensures an exceptionally pure signal path, dramatically reducing background noise to reveal the subtlest micro-details in your recordings.
The amplification architecture is based on a fully discrete Class AB topology, delivering 75 watts per channel into 8 ohms with total harmonic distortion of just 0.08%. This output—50% higher than the multichannel Cinema 70s in the same lineup—provides generous dynamic headroom for the vast majority of speakers.
The Stereo 70s rear panel reveals a wealth of connections rarely seen at this price point. Six HDMI inputs, including three compatible with 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz, accommodate next-gen game consoles, UHD Blu-ray players, and TV set-top boxes. This abundance of HDMI ports sets the Stereo 70s apart from traditional stereo amplifiers, positioning it as the nerve center of a complete multimedia system.
The amplifier also features an MM phono input for turntables, three analog line inputs, optical and coaxial digital inputs, and a USB-A port for direct file playback. Two independent subwoofer outputs enable optimal integration of subwoofers, with adjustable low-pass filters between 40 Hz and 250 Hz. Stereo preamp outputs and a Zone 2 output allow system expansion to multi-room configurations or the addition of external power amplifiers.
The HEOS Built-in platform transforms the Stereo 70s into a true multiroom streaming hub. Compatible with high-resolution formats up to 24-bit/192 kHz and DSD 5.6 MHz, the device provides direct access to Amazon Music HD, TIDAL, Deezer, Napster, and SoundCloud. AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect ensure seamless integration with the Apple and Spotify ecosystems.
Roon Tested certification confirms compatibility with this music management platform favored by audiophiles. Bluetooth and dual-band Wi‑Fi round out the wireless options, while the Ethernet port ensures a stable connection for demanding high-resolution streams. Integration with Alexa and Siri (via HomePod) enables voice control of key functions.
The Stereo 70s perpetuates the Marantz sound, renowned for its natural warmth and harmonic richness. The midrange has a velvety texture that flatters vocals and acoustic instruments. The bass is generous and full-bodied, with a roundness that adds weight and substance to the music.
This presentation favors tonal coherence and long-term listening pleasure over surgical analysis. The treble remains smooth and refined, avoiding harshness even on less polished recordings. The soundstage unfolds expansively, offering three-dimensional imaging where each instrument naturally finds its place.
For movie listening, the absence of Dolby or DTS decoders means sources must be configured to output PCM. This technical limitation doesn’t prevent the Stereo 70s from delivering a dynamic, enveloping stereo performance, with a remarkable ability to reproduce panoramic effects and the depth of modern soundtracks.
The Marantz story begins in 1951 in the New York basement of Saul Bernard Marantz. An amateur musician and perfectionist, Saul Marantz couldn’t find equipment on the market that met his standards, so he decided to build his own. His first product, the Audio Consolette, was assembled on his kitchen table in 1953. The immediate success of the first 100 units led to the official founding of the Marantz Company.
Collaboration with engineer Sidney Smith—who arrived at Marantz after seeing an ad for the Model 1—gave rise to legendary products: the Model 7 preamplifier (1958), the Model 9 power amplifier (1960), and the Model 10B FM tuner (1964). The Model 9 was even adapted by NASA for the Apollo space program, the ultimate testament to its reliability and exceptional performance.
After several changes of ownership—Superscope in 1964, then Philips, and now Sound United—Marantz has preserved its unique sonic identity and commitment to musicality. The Stereo 70s embodies this continuity, integrating the latest technologies while honoring the founding principles established by Saul Marantz: reproduce music with naturalness, emotion, and fidelity.
The Stereo 70s delivers 75 watts per channel versus 50 watts for the Cinema 70s and incorporates HDAM modules, which the multichannel model lacks. The Cinema 70s offers 7 channels with Dolby Atmos/DTS:X decoding and Audyssey room correction, but the Stereo 70s provides superior sound quality in pure stereo thanks to its more sophisticated amplifier architecture.
The Stereo 70s is perfectly suited for a 2.0 or 2.2 channel setup. All sources (TV, set-top box, console) must be configured to output PCM audio since the unit does not decode multichannel formats. This stereo configuration can be sufficient for many users who prioritize simplicity and sound quality over surround spatialization.
HDAMs significantly reduce background noise and improve transient response compared to conventional op-amps. This technology contributes to the unit’s exceptionally quiet operation and its ability to reveal the most delicate details, especially noticeable on high-resolution recordings and complex musical passages.
HEOS lets you create a multiroom audio system by connecting multiple compatible devices on the same network. You can stream the same music everywhere or different content in each room via the HEOS mobile app. The Zone 2 output also allows you to drive a separate stereo system in another room.
With its 75 watts and generous low-end character, the Stereo 70s can perform perfectly well without a subwoofer when paired with floorstanders or larger bookshelf speakers. Adding one or two subs is still recommended with compact speakers or to achieve maximum extension in the deepest bass, particularly for movie use.
Thanks to its optimized Class AB amplification and generous dimensions for a slim device, the Stereo 70s maintains a moderate operating temperature. Natural convection is sufficient in most home setups, with no need for forced ventilation even during extended listening at higher volumes.

Marantz Stereo 70s is a particularly well-balanced amplifier that combines clean, musical sound with practical modern features.
It plays warmly and pleasantly without causing fatigue, while remaining powerful enough for most setups (75W/channel).
Its slim design and the many connections (HDMI, streaming, etc.) make it ideal for someone who wants an “all-in-one” stereo amplifier without complexity.
Overall, it is a very high-quality and versatile choice for everyday listening.
