Overview

This DIN to Stereo XLR interconnect cable from Naim Audio ensures audio signal transmission between a Naim preamplifier and a power amplifier from the brand equipped with an XLR input. Designed according to the specific specifications of the British manufacturer, it fits into the integrated system philosophy that has characterized Naim since its beginnings. Its one-meter length meets the needs of an audio setup where the preamplifier and amplifier are positioned close to each other.

Design and cable structure

The DIN to Stereo XLR cable uses a construction with three conductors enclosed in a slim black sheath. This streamlined design stands out from the thicker SNAIC cables used for connections that carry both signal and power.

On the source side (preamplifier), the cable terminates in a 4-pin DIN connector arranged in a 216-degree arc. This connector format is typically used for Naim preamplifier outputs and can carry the full stereo signal. On the amplifier side, a Cannon-type Naim XLR connector provides the link to the power amplifier’s input.

The DIN connectors used by Naim are manufactured by Preh (now PrehKeyTec) and are distinguished by their rotary-ring locking system, which guarantees a stable and secure connection. This mechanism prevents accidental disconnections that could damage the loudspeakers if the system is powered on.

The technical choice of the DIN connector

Naim Audio continues to use DIN connectors while the majority of audio manufacturers have adopted RCA (or phono) connectors. This choice is based on several technical considerations.

The RCA connector, initially designed as a DC power connector, has a high-frequency capacitive impedance of around 200 ohms. However, cables that connect two RCA connectors generally have an impedance of around 50 ohms. This mismatch creates signal reflections at both ends of the cable, particularly at high frequencies. These reflections extend the signal decay time and can mask low-level musical information, such as subtle harmonics or background instruments.

The DIN connector has an impedance similar to that of the cable itself, which eliminates these reflection phenomena. Furthermore, when two devices are connected by an RCA cable, the two separate shields (left and right) create a ground loop that degrades performance. With a single DIN cable surrounding both signal conductors, there is only one ground path, preserving the system’s common reference point.

Compatibility and applications

This DIN to Stereo XLR cable is designed to connect a Naim preamplifier, together with its external power supply, to a regulated power amplifier from the brand. The stereo version is particularly suitable for the NAP 250, where both channels are handled via a single XLR connector.

For mono or bi-amped power amplifiers such as the NAP 135, NAP 300, or NAP 500, separate cables are required for each channel. These versions are distinguished by different colored bands: green for channel 1 and red for channel 2.

The cable is compatible with Naim Classic and 500 series preamplifiers equipped with 4-pin DIN outputs. It can also be used with Flatcap, Hicap, or Supercap external power supplies when these are powering the preamplifier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this cable replace a SNAIC cable?

No. SNAIC (Super Naim Audio Interconnect Cable) cables carry both the audio signal and the 24V power supply to the preamplifier. This DIN to XLR cable carries only the audio signal and is used exclusively between a preamplifier already powered by an external source and a regulated power amplifier.

Can I use this cable with a NAP 300 or NAP 500 amplifier?

NAP 300 and NAP 500 amplifiers require separate cables for each channel (left and right), identifiable by their green and red color bands. The stereo version of this cable is designed for the NAP 250, which accepts both channels on a single XLR connector.

Does the direction of connection matter?

Naim cables are directional. A colored band indicates the direction of signal flow: it must point towards the amplifier (direction of listening). This orientation optimizes shielding performance.

Does this cable work with non-Naim equipment?

The XLR connector used by Naim on its classic power amplifiers is not balanced in the conventional sense. It is an unbalanced connection using an XLR format. Compatibility with preamplifiers from other brands requires checking pinout configurations and impedance.

What is the difference compared with Hi-Line cables or Super Lumina?

The standard Naim cable offers performance optimized for a Naim system at an accessible cost. The Hi-Line and Super Lumina ranges incorporate additional technologies such as the patented Air-PLUG connector, which mechanically decouples the cable to reduce microphonic interference. These high-end cables also use silver-plated copper conductors and multiple shields.
