The Pro-Ject T1 EVO represents the perfect blend of audiophile quality and accessibility for vinyl enthusiasts. This entry-level turntable stands out for its uncompromising approach: no plastic components, a sleek design, and meticulous attention to technical details that directly impact sound quality. Manufactured in Europe by a factory with decades of experience in turntable design, the T1 EVO delivers a lively and detailed musical reproduction that far exceeds expectations for its price range.
The chassis of the Pro-Ject T1 EVO is fully CNC-machined, with no hollow spaces inside. This solid and dense construction effectively eliminates unwanted vibrations that could interfere with playback. Available in three elegant finishes – high-gloss black, satin white, and satin walnut – this turntable seamlessly integrates into any interior.
The 8mm-thick sandblasted glass platter is a smart technical choice. Unlike plastic or lightweight metal platters found on many entry-level turntables, this material provides significant mass and excellent inertia, ensuring stable and consistent rotation. The density and rigidity of the glass effectively eliminate unwanted resonances that could color the sound. A felt mat completes the setup, protecting your records and optimizing contact with the platter.
The external power supply is another important technical detail. By isolating the transformer from the main chassis, Pro-Ject eliminates a potential source of electromagnetic interference and mechanical vibrations, contributing to the purity of the audio signal.
The 8.6-inch (21.8 cm) one-piece aluminum tonearm is one of the highlights of this turntable. Its single-piece design, with no glued or assembled parts, ensures optimal rigidity while maintaining a low effective mass of 8 grams. High-precision, low-friction bearings provide smooth and precise movement, allowing the stylus to accurately follow the grooves.
The T1 EVO comes with a pre-installed and pre-aligned Ortofon OM10 cartridge. This high-quality moving magnet cartridge, equipped with an elliptical diamond stylus, offers precise groove tracking and an extended frequency response. It represents a significant upgrade over the OM5e cartridge found on the standard T1 model, with better midrange definition and finer detail reproduction.
The belt drive, combined with a low-vibration motor, ensures stable platter rotation with minimal speed variations (0.7% at 33 RPM and 0.6% at 45 RPM). This stability translates into tonal accuracy and the absence of pitch fluctuations that could distort the listening experience.
The Pro-Ject T1 EVO adopts a “plug & play” philosophy, making it particularly suitable for beginners. Unlike many audiophile turntables that require complex adjustments, it comes pre-set and calibrated. The cartridge is already mounted and aligned, the tracking force is adjusted to 17.5 mN (1.75 grams), and the anti-skating is pre-set. Simply remove the transport locks, install the platter, and connect the cables to start listening.
The electronic speed change between 33 and 45 RPM is a notable improvement over the standard T1 model. No need to manually move the belt on the motor pulley: a simple press of a button is enough to switch speeds, making operation more intuitive and preserving the belt from premature wear.
The included phono cables deserve special mention. Specifically designed by Pro-Ject for vinyl turntables, these semi-symmetrical cables with low capacitance and reinforced shielding preserve the integrity of the low-level audio signal generated by the cartridge. This technical choice, rare for an entry-level turntable, reflects the attention given to every link in the audio chain.
The sound quality of the Pro-Ject T1 EVO is characterized by a natural tonal balance and an engaging musical presentation. The signal-to-noise ratio of 65 dB ensures an exceptionally quiet background for a turntable in this category, allowing micro-details to emerge clearly.
The bass is firm and articulate, benefiting from the rotational stability of the heavy glass platter. The midrange, particularly important for reproducing vocals and acoustic instruments, is rendered with naturalness and presence. The treble offers good extension without harshness, thanks in part to the quality of the Ortofon OM10 cartridge.
The soundstage provides convincing width and depth, allowing precise localization of instruments in space. This ability to recreate the ambiance of a recording sets the T1 EVO apart from more basic entry-level turntables that tend to “flatten” the sound perspective.
What is the main difference between the three versions of the T1 EVO?
The standard version requires an external phono preamp or a phono input on your amplifier. The Phono version includes a switchable preamp, allowing the turntable to connect directly to any line input. The BT version adds aptX HD Bluetooth transmission for wireless connection to compatible speakers or headphones.
Can I replace the Ortofon OM10 cartridge with another model?
Yes, the standard headshell allows for the installation of most half-inch mount cartridges available on the market. The 8-gram effective mass of the tonearm makes it compatible with a wide range of medium to high compliance cartridges. However, note that replacement will require precise adjustment of alignment, tracking force, and anti-skating.
How can I adjust the tracking force if needed?
Although the turntable comes pre-set at 17.5 mN (1.75 grams), you can adjust the tracking force by turning the counterweight at the back of the tonearm. A precision stylus force gauge is recommended for exact adjustment. The ideal range for the Ortofon OM10 cartridge is between 15 and 20 mN (1.5 to 2.0 grams).
