Overview
Eight years separate the 9000P from the last Audiolab power amplifier, the 8300XP. This new reference, designed by Danish engineer Jan Ertner (also responsible for the Quad range), incorporates the refinements developed for the 9000A integrated amplifier while benefiting from optimizations specific to separate components. The 9000P uses a dual-mono Class AB configuration and offers a bridged mode that turns it into a 300 W mono block.
A complementary feedback amplification topology
The amplification circuit is based on CFB (Complementary Feedback) technology, a technical hallmark of Audiolab. In this configuration, the output transistors and driver transistors operate together in a local feedback loop. The quiescent current of the output stage depends on the temperature of the driver transistors rather than the power transistors. This feature enables faster and more precise thermal regulation: the stabilization circuit does not need to take into account the thermal inertia of the main heatsink, which keeps the quiescent current stable even during demanding musical passages.
Measured harmonic distortion falls below 0.002% at 1 kHz at two-thirds of maximum power. The signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 112 dB (A-weighted), a high value for this price range. Each channel can deliver up to 15 A of current, giving it the ability to drive low-impedance speakers or speakers with modest sensitivity.
Linear power supply and mains filtering
The 320 VA toroidal transformer has been developed specifically for this model. Four 15,000 µF capacitors provide a total reserve of 60,000 µF. This filtering capacity powers both channels in a dual-mono configuration, with each channel having its own power supply circuit.
Audiolab has integrated into the 9000P the mains filtering technology derived from its DC Block and DC Block 6 accessories. This circuit attenuates the RFI and EMI interference present on the power grid before it reaches the amplification stages. Standby power consumption remains below 0.5 W.
Stereo mode and bridged mode
In stereo operation, the 9000P delivers 100 W per channel into 8 Ω and 160 W into 4 Ω. A switch on the back of the unit allows you to switch to bridged mode: the amplifier then becomes a 300 W mono block into 8 Ω (380 W into 4 Ω). Purchasing two units makes it possible to build a monoblock configuration offering absolute channel separation and substantial power reserves for the most demanding loudspeakers.
A second switch lets you choose between the unbalanced RCA input (1 Vrms sensitivity) and the balanced XLR input (2 Vrms sensitivity). The 10 kΩ input impedance ensures compatibility with most preamplifiers and variable-output sources.
Construction and system integration
The aluminum chassis measures 444 × 90 × 327 mm and weighs 9.2 kg. The extremely minimalist front panel features only a standby button and a status LED. This stripped-back design contrasts with the 9000Q preamplifier and its screens, but maintains visual coherence thanks to a vertical line placed in the same position as the preamp’s display. Two finishes are available: black and silver.
The 12 V trigger allows the amplifier to be switched on and off automatically from the 9000Q preamplifier or other compatible sources. Thermal management relies on internal heatsinks that keep operating temperature moderate even under prolonged use.
Sound signature and recommended combinations
The 9000P offers reproduction geared towards neutrality, with a slight coolness in the upper frequencies. Bass is tight and precise, with good transient control but without the sheer weight or warmth found with some competitors. The soundstage extends widely between the speakers with good depth and stable imaging.
This sound signature suits systems equipped with warm- or dark-sounding speakers, to which the 9000P will bring definition and dynamics. Pairing it with the 9000Q preamplifier, the 9000N network player, or the 9000CDT CD transport creates a coherent set both sonically and aesthetically. The 9000P can also complement the 9000A integrated amplifier in passive bi-amping, or serve as the main power amplification with a source featuring variable output.
Frequently asked questions
Can the 9000P replace an integrated amplifier?
No, the 9000P is a power amplifier without volume control or source selection. It requires a preamplifier such as the 9000Q, or a source with a variable-level output (network player, DAC with volume control).
What is the difference between stereo mode and bridged mode?
In stereo mode, a single 9000P powers both speakers. In bridged mode, it becomes a mono amplifier powering a single speaker with triple the power. This configuration requires two 9000Ps for a complete stereo system.
Can the 9000P be stacked on top of the 9000Q preamplifier?
It is possible but not recommended. Stacking can affect the noise floor and heat dissipation. Leaving a gap or using a separate shelf preserves optimal performance.
Is the 9000P suitable for low-sensitivity speakers?
With 100 W per channel and a current delivery capacity of 15 A, the 9000P can easily drive most speakers on the market. For particularly demanding models or high listening levels, a dual-mono configuration provides additional headroom.
