Optoma UZ38X: 4K laser in a compact format

Three and a half kilos for a native 4K laser projector is a proposition worth a closer look. The UZ38X packs into a 238 × 215 × 130 mm chassis the essentials of what Optoma does best in home projection: a long‑life DuraCore light source, PureEngine Ultra image processing, and installation versatility that allows every possible orientation.

A laser light source built for everyday use

The DuraCore module promises 30,000 hours of operation before dropping to 50% of its initial brightness. In real‑world use, that translates to over ten years at eight hours per day, with no lamp replacement or maintenance required. Its 3800 lumens let you project with moderate ambient light. In a room with shutters closed, the image gains depth thanks to a specified contrast ratio of 1,500,000:1.

The 80% uniformity is decent without being exceptional. It’s sufficient for movies and video games, but presentations with large solid color areas may reveal slight brightness variations towards the edges of the image.

Video processing and display modes

PureEngine Ultra automatically calibrates contrast, saturation, and sharpness. PureMotion MEMC technology handles motion interpolation: it generates intermediate frames to reduce blur in fast scenes, an advantage for sports broadcasts or action games. Filmmaker Mode disables these processing features to reproduce films at 24 frames per second as they were shot.

The DLP chip delivers a native resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels. The processor handles signals up to 120 Hz vertical refresh, ensuring compatibility with next‑generation consoles in 4K at 60 Hz or 1080p at 120 Hz. Active 3D is supported via DLP Link.

Flexible installation

The 1.21:1 to 1.59:1 throw ratio and 1.3× manual zoom provide reasonable leeway to adapt image size (from 71 cm to 7.62 m diagonal) to the available distance (from 1 to 8 meters). The native 105% vertical lens offset avoids having to tilt the unit to center the image, while ± 30° keystone correction (automatic vertical, manual horizontal) compensates for imperfect positioning.

360° operation allows projection onto the ceiling, the floor, or any intermediate orientation. The unit is rated for continuous 24/7 operation. The IP6X certification for the optics (not the entire chassis) guarantees dust‑tight protection for the critical part of the system.

Noise levels range between 28 and 33 dB depending on the operating mode. In Eco mode, fan noise remains unobtrusive a few meters away.

Connectivity and integration

Two HDMI 2.0 inputs are enough to connect a TV box and a game console, or a Blu‑ray player and a PC. The USB‑A port supplies 5 V / 1.5 A, sufficient to power an HDMI dongle such as a Chromecast or Fire TV Stick. The 3.5 mm jack output lets you route audio to an external sound system, while the 12 V trigger can control a motorized screen. The RS232 port meets home automation integration needs.

The built‑in 15 W speaker is fine for occasional use. Its output remains modest compared with the potential image size; an external audio system is a must to take full advantage of the cinema‑scale format.
