Overview
Two compact speakers and a subwoofer in a single pack: this 2.1 setup is the most affordable entry point into a Sonos hi-fi system. The Era 100 SL share the same acoustic architecture as the Era 100 but without microphones, while the cylindrical Sub Mini delivers the low frequencies that speakers of this size cannot reproduce on their own.
A stereo system designed as a whole
The main strength of this pack lies in the complementarity of its elements. The Era 100 SL, with their two angled tweeters and mid-woofer, deliver clear stereo separation and precise mids. But their compact form factor naturally limits bass reproduction. The Sub Mini takes over below a certain frequency: its two 15 cm woofers go down to 25 Hz.
This division of labor has an interesting consequence. When a subwoofer is added to the system, the main speakers can focus on the high and mid frequencies, while the sub handles the bottom of the spectrum. The result: clearer mids and a better-defined soundstage, even at moderate volume.
Era 100 SL, the microphone-free version of Era 100
The “SL” suffix stands for “Speechless”: the Era 100 SL delivers the same finely tuned stereo sound and rich bass as the Era 100 speaker, but without the built-in microphones. Sonos presents this model as the spiritual successor to the Sonos One SL, the compact speaker that offered a more affordable alternative to the Sonos One by removing integrated voice control.
In practice, the absence of a mic has two implications. First, no built-in voice assistant, which suits those who prefer to avoid always-listening devices. Second, the Era 100 SL cannot perform Quick Trueplay, which uses internal microphones to automatically calibrate the sound. Classic Trueplay calibration remains available, but it requires an iOS device.
The acoustic architecture is identical to the Era 100: three class-D digital amplifiers power two angled tweeters and one mid-woofer. The angled tweeters create stereo reproduction from a single speaker. This configuration is a qualitative leap compared with the Sonos One generation.
Sub Mini and its force-cancelling design
The subwoofer has a cylindrical shape with a through-opening in its center. Inside, two drivers are placed face to face to create a force-cancelling effect that prevents unwanted vibrations. This technique, borrowed from the larger Sub Gen 3, keeps the subwoofer stable even during music passages with very heavy bass.
The structure is sealed (closed-box), with no port. Standing waves are cancelled, bass is tighter, and the subwoofer can go lower in frequency. Sonos specifies a response starting at 25 Hz, which is notable for a subwoofer of this size (23 cm in diameter, 30.5 cm in height).
Perhaps the most impressive aspect is the total absence of distortion when the bass kicks in. Placing your hand on the Sub Mini while playing, you feel only a slight vibration, even on particularly demanding passages.
Connectivity and integration into the Sonos system
The Era 100 SL connect via Wi-Fi 6 (2.4 and 5 GHz) and support Bluetooth 5.3 as well as Apple AirPlay 2. A USB-C port lets you add the optional Line-In adapter to connect a turntable or an external audio source.
The Sub Mini has an Ethernet port in addition to Wi-Fi. As with the main Sub, the Sub Mini operates wirelessly (using 5 GHz for a robust connection) aside from the power cable. When paired with a Sonos soundbar, audio sync with picture is latency-free.
The whole system is configured via the Sonos S2 app. Once the three elements are paired, the system behaves as a single unit: volume is controlled globally, and the equalizer lets you adjust bass, treble, and the subwoofer’s relative level. Trueplay calibration analyzes the room’s acoustics and optimizes the overall response.
Use in home cinema or music setup
This pack can be used in two ways. In standalone configuration, the two Era 100 SL form a stereo pair complemented by the Sub Mini: a 2.1 system for music listening. This is the main intended use of this bundle.
The other option: use the Era 100 SL as rear speakers in a Sonos home cinema system. Paired with an Arc, Arc Ultra, or Beam soundbar, they add the surround channels. If you pair multiple Era 100 SL speakers with a Sonos soundbar equipped with voice control, you get a surround system with voice control only where you need it. The Sub Mini then reinforces the system’s overall bass.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use the Era 100 SL with a standard Era 100 to form a stereo pair?
Yes. The two versions are compatible with each other. If you already own an Era 100 with microphone, you can add an Era 100 SL to create a stereo pair. Voice control will be available via the speaker equipped with the mic.
Does Trueplay calibration work on Android with this pack?
No. The Era 100 SL does not support Quick Trueplay (which requires internal mics). Classic Trueplay calibration, performed from the app, requires an iPhone or iPad. Android users will not be able to use this feature with the Era 100 SL, but can adjust the equalizer manually.
Can the Sub Mini be laid horizontally under a piece of furniture?
No. Unlike the Sub Gen 3, the Sub Mini must remain in a vertical position. Its built-in feet ensure stability and allow cables to pass underneath.
What’s the difference between the Sub Mini and the Sub Gen 3?
The Sub Gen 3 uses 25 cm woofers (versus 15 cm for the Mini) and delivers more low-frequency power. Sonos recommends the Sub Gen 3 for large rooms or pairing with the Arc, while the Sub Mini is suited to small to medium spaces and compact speakers such as the Era 100.
Can you plug a turntable directly into the Era 100 SL?
Yes, via the Sonos Line-In adapter (sold separately), which connects to the speaker’s USB-C port. If your turntable does not have a built-in phono preamp, you will need to add one between the turntable and the adapter.
