Denon AVR-X2900HDAB
Overview
Three years after the AVR-X2800H, Denon is updating its mid-range 7.2-channel amplifier. Power remains at 95 W per channel into 8 ohms, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X formats are still included, and the DAB+ tuner is integrated in this European version. The most anticipated new feature is on the acoustic calibration side: the AVR-X2900H DAB is compatible with Dirac Live Room Correction, as an option, while retaining the Audyssey MultEQ XT system.
Seven channels, two subwoofers, and flexible configurations
The amplifier delivers 95 W per channel into 8 ohms (20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.08% distortion, two channels driven) and 125 W per channel into 6 ohms (1 kHz, 0.7%, two channels). Denon applies its “70%” guarantee: when five channels are operating simultaneously, each receives at least 70% of the rated power. This is a point rarely documented by home theater amplifier manufacturers, and it provides a more realistic indication of behavior under multichannel conditions.
The seven amplification channels feed seven pairs of assignable speaker terminals. The basic configuration is a 7.2 system (seven speakers, two subwoofer outputs). For those who want to add Dolby Atmos height speakers, switching to 5.1.2 is possible: five speakers at listener level, one subwoofer, two height speakers. The terminals also support bi-amping and A/B speaker assignment, which leaves room to adapt the installation over time.
Audyssey MultEQ XT and Dirac Live: two approaches to calibration
The AVR-X2900H DAB integrates the Audyssey Silver system, which includes MultEQ XT calibration, Dynamic EQ (maintaining tonal balance at low volume), and Dynamic Volume (attenuating sound peaks in programs). MultEQ XT measures the room’s acoustic response from several listening positions and corrects equalization, with particular attention to low frequencies. This system is operational right out of the box.
To go further with acoustic correction, Denon offers optional Dirac Live Room Correction compatibility. The license, purchased separately from Dirac, provides access to mixed-phase correction and time-domain processing that MultEQ XT does not cover. Dirac Live corrects early reflections, widens the optimal listening area, and allows custom target curves to be defined. On the AVR-X2800H, this option did not exist: it is the most significant contribution of this new generation.
8K video, extended HDR, and gaming features
Six HDMI inputs and two outputs make up the video connection panel. Among the inputs, three support 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz signals. The amplifier handles 8K pass-through and upscaling of 4K content to 8K, with HDCP 2.3 compatibility for protected streams. The HDMI outputs integrate ARC and eARC, which simplifies connection to the TV (a single HDMI cable to send TV audio to the amplifier).
HDR is covered in its current variants: Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, and Dynamic HDR. On the gaming side, VRR (variable refresh rate), QFT (Quick Frame Transport), ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), and AMD FreeSync compatibility reduce latency and display artifacts on compatible consoles and PCs.
Complete audio connectivity and DAB+ tuner
Beyond the HDMI inputs, the AVR-X2900H DAB features four analog stereo inputs, including one MM phono input for turntables. Two optical inputs and one coaxial input complete the digital connectivity. A multi-zone analog pre-out allows an amplifier to be connected in a second room.
The DAB+ tuner receives digital radio stations with the AAC+ codec, without relying on an internet connection. Classic FM and AM reception remains available as a complement.
Streaming, HEOS multiroom, and voice control
The HEOS Built-in platform provides access to streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music, TuneIn) and wireless multiroom streaming to HEOS-compatible speakers and devices. The amplifier manages two audio zones with distinct sources: surround in the main room and another source in a second room, or the same source everywhere.
AirPlay 2 compatibility enables playback from an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV. The built-in Bluetooth transmitter also works in reverse: it can send the amplifier’s sound to Bluetooth headphones, either alone or in parallel with the speakers. Voice control is handled via Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri (via AirPlay 2), and Josh.ai for more advanced home automation installations.
Startup and configuration tools
The Denon Setup Assistant guides the initial installation step by step, with on-screen display on the TV. An integrated web interface then provides access to the amplifier’s settings from a computer or mobile device, without turning on the TV. It is a useful shortcut for quickly changing a setting.
Real-time per-channel level monitoring is displayed on screen: each channel shows its input level, which helps verify speaker configuration and proper signal routing. The Denon AVR Remote app completes the setup for everyday control (volume, source selection, standby) from a smartphone.
What the press says
It’s too early to say if Denon AVR-X2900H can dethrone the Award-winning Sony, but this compelling first outing carries some noticeable audio upgrades to make the upcoming battle of the AVRs even more exciting.[...] Subtle upgrades aside, this AVR remains functional-looking rather than particularly eye-catching.[...] The scene in which the Atreides clan boards an Ornithopter to see the spice fields of Arrakis sounded noticeably richer and larger in scale on the new model, while also remaining agile and exciting in an impressive display of cinematic balance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Audyssey MultEQ XT and Dirac Live on this amplifier?
Audyssey MultEQ XT is built in and works at no extra cost. It measures the room and corrects equalization with an emphasis on low frequencies. Dirac Live, available as an option via a paid license, adds time and phase correction, early reflection processing, and the ability to define a custom target curve. The two systems do not operate simultaneously: you have to choose one or the other.
Does the phono input accept moving coil (MC) cartridges?
No. The built-in phono input is designed for moving magnet (MM) cartridges only. To connect a turntable equipped with an MC cartridge, an external MC phono preamplifier must be inserted between the turntable and one of the amplifier’s analog inputs.
How does the 70% power guarantee work?
When all seven channels are powered, the available power per channel decreases compared with the two-channel measurement. Denon guarantees that with five channels active simultaneously, each receives at least 70% of the rated power (or about 66 W per channel into 8 ohms). This is a specification that is rarely communicated, and it provides a useful benchmark for sizing speakers.
Can the amplifier send sound to Bluetooth headphones without muting the speakers?
Yes. The built-in Bluetooth transmitter offers two modes: headphones only (the speakers are muted) or headphones and speakers simultaneously. Only one set of headphones can be connected at a time. Headphone volume is adjusted from the headphones themselves, not from the amplifier.
