Dolby Atmos

Dolby Atmos is an object-based spatial audio format developed by Dolby Laboratories. Up to 128 sound objects can be positioned freely in a three-dimensional space, including height, independently of the number of physical speakers. The processor decoder calculates in real time the playback suited to the installed configuration.

Dolby Atmos systems are denoted x.y.z, where z refers to ceiling speakers or Atmos-enabled modules reflecting sound toward the ceiling. A 5.1.2 configuration is the recommended minimum for a compatible home theater, while 7.1.4 fully takes advantage of spatial sound with a uniform height layer above the listening position.
