Back Boxes

The back box is the foundation of a successful installation. This PVC or aluminum enclosure is placed within the wall structure before drywall is installed. It creates a controlled acoustic volume for the speaker, optimizing bass reproduction and frequency response. The back box significantly improves soundproofing by limiting sound dispersion behind the driver. Most models include damping material (M1-rated foam, rock wool) to reduce unwanted vibrations. Each manufacturer offers back boxes tailored to its speakers, with specific dimensions according to the recommended volume.

Mounting and Fastening Kits

Mounting kits include everything needed for a stable installation: screws suited to the wall type (BA13 drywall, MDF, wood), adjustable brackets, sealing gaskets, and quick-mount systems. These accessories facilitate installation in hollow partitions and ensure long-term speaker stability. The kit typically includes a cutting template that lets you precisely trace the opening to be made in the wall.

Grilles and Finishes

All in-wall/in-ceiling speakers come with removable grilles, but replacement grilles are available in multiple finishes. Paintable grilles allow seamless integration with your decor: simply remove them, apply paint with a spray can or spray gun (to avoid clogging the perforations), then reinstall them. Magnetic grilles simplify handling and offer screwless, clean mounting. Some models offer interchangeable round and square grilles to suit different layouts.

Adjustable Mounts

For specific setups where the speaker cannot face the listening area, angled brackets allow you to aim the sound precisely. These accessories are installed with in-wall speakers and let you adjust the dispersion angle. Some speakers integrate a pivoting tweeter or driver to direct high frequencies toward the listener without additional hardware.

Acoustic Isolation

Insulation materials (rock wool, acoustic foam, Dacron) are placed behind the speaker or inside the back box to absorb residual waves and prevent unwanted resonances. Proper isolation improves sound accuracy and prevents noise from bleeding into adjacent rooms. The volume and density of the material should be matched to the speaker’s specifications.

Cabling Accessories

Gold-plated binding posts, cable extensions, and banana plugs ensure a reliable connection between the speaker and the amplifier. Banana plugs simplify hookup and prevent screw-type binding posts from loosening over time. They provide solid contact for optimal conductivity, provided you choose the correct diameter and carefully terminate the cable.

Compatibility and Installation

Accessories for in-wall/in-ceiling speakers are generally specific to each product line. Be sure to check compatibility with your speakers (Cabasse, Focal, Elipson, Bowers & Wilkins, KEF, etc.) before purchasing. For new construction, installing back boxes and running cables should be done before drywall is fitted. In renovations, the project requires more extensive work but remains feasible with hollow partitions.

In-wall/in-ceiling speakers are suitable for both stereo setups and multichannel home theater systems. In the ceiling (in-ceiling), they reproduce Dolby Atmos and DTS:X height channels. In the wall (in-wall), they handle the front, center, and surround channels. Choosing the right accessories directly determines the final sound quality and the long-term reliability of the installation.
