Turntable Dust Covers

The turntable dust cover protects your setup from dust, accidental handling, and everyday mishaps. Available as a hinged cover or a removable lid, it extends your turntable’s lifespan and maintains its sonic performance. Made primarily from clear acrylic, the cover is an essential accessory for any vinyl enthusiast who cares about their gear. Learn more

Why use a turntable dust cover

Dust is the main enemy of your vinyl setup. Without protection, it accumulates in the grooves of your records and on the stylus tip, gradually degrading sound quality. Dust also acts as an abrasive that prematurely wears the stylus and irreversibly damages your records’ grooves.

Beyond dust protection, the cover shields your turntable’s sensitive components from children’s clumsy hands, your pets’ curious noses, and minor everyday accidents. If your turntable doesn’t come with a cover or in case of breakage, getting one quickly becomes essential.

Hinged cover or removable lid

The hinged cover is the most common solution on turntables. Attached to the plinth with hinges, it opens and closes easily. However, this convenience comes with a downside: mechanically coupling it to the plinth can affect sound reproduction, even when the cover is open. The hinges transmit vibrations picked up by the cover directly to the turntable’s plinth.

The removable lid offers an appealing alternative. Not fixed to the turntable, it rests directly on the hi-fi rack or on the plinth. Removing it completely during playback eliminates any risk of vibration transfer. This solution is particularly suited to audiophile setups where every detail counts. The lid can be stored next to the turntable and put back in place after each listening session.

Use during playback

Contrary to popular belief, the cover should never remain closed while playing a record. The phono cartridge acts like a miniature microphone: it picks up not only the groove’s information but also ambient sounds. With the cover closed, the sound produced by the cartridge gets trapped, creating a resonance effect that disturbs the audio signal.

Vibrations from your speakers also propagate through the room. A closed cover picks up these vibrations and transmits them to the turntable’s plinth, then to the cartridge. The result is a less clear, less detailed sound with reduced definition. For optimal listening, remove the cover entirely or keep it open during playback.

Materials and manufacturing

Clear acrylic (PMMA or Plexiglas) remains the most widely used material. Its transparency lets you admire your turntable’s mechanics while protecting it effectively. Acrylic offers excellent UV resistance and greater clarity than glass, without the weight or fragility. Cast acrylic covers provide the best optical quality.

Many manufacturers offer covers tailored to specific turntable models (Pro-Ject, Rega, Audio-Technica, Thorens, etc.). For turntables without a compatible reference, several French artisans make custom dust covers. Custom manufacturing ensures a perfect fit to your turntable’s exact dimensions.

Compatibility and installation

Before buying, check your turntable’s dimensions and the available space for the cover. Turntables equipped with factory hinges require a cover compatible with their mounting system. Some models use standardized hinges, others proprietary systems.

For a removable lid, measure the width, depth, and required height precisely. Allow space for the tonearm in its rest position and for the platter in rotation. A cover that’s too tight risks contacting moving parts.

Installing a hinged cover is generally straightforward. Most attach with screws to inserts provided on the plinth. Some replacement covers include their own hinges if the originals are damaged. Removable lids require no installation: simply place them on the turntable.
