Phono Cartridges

Phono cartridges transform the physical grooves of records into electrical signals. This crucial link determines your system’s sound quality. The main types are moving magnet (MM), which are more common and affordable, and moving coil (MC), favored by audiophiles. Your choice depends on the tonearm, the phono preamplifier, and the stylus profile: conical, elliptical, or high-end. Read more

The cartridge’s central role

While the turntable usually gets the spotlight when buying hi-fi gear, the cartridge tends to stay in the shadows. Yet it’s the cartridge that converts the diamond’s vibrations into the electrical current sent to the preamp. Beyond a certain quality level, upgrading the cartridge brings more improvement than changing the turntable. A simple cartridge swap can transform your listening and make you rediscover your favorite records.

MM and MC cartridges: two distinct technologies

Moving magnet (MM) cartridges equip most turntables on the market. Their robust design, higher output level (2 to 5 mV), and compatibility with most phono preamps explain their popularity. Their main advantage is the easy replacement of the stylus, with an average lifespan of 600 to 700 listening hours. However, MM cartridges are somewhat limited in frequency response, particularly in the high frequencies.

Moving coil (MC) cartridges appeal to demanding audiophiles. The coil, attached to the cantilever, weighs much less than a magnet, improving transient response and frequency extension. The sound gains finesse and detail. This technology comes in two versions: low-output MC cartridges (around 0.5 mV) require a dedicated preamplifier, while high-output MC cartridges (above 2 mV) work with standard MM preamps. The main downside of MC cartridges is stylus replacement, which requires a factory retip.

Different stylus profiles

The stylus profile determines reading precision. Conical styli, the simplest and most economical, suit entry-level turntables. However, their small contact area limits treble reproduction. Elliptical styli offer a better balance: their larger vertical contact area improves high-frequency tracking and reduces distortion.

High-end profiles (Contact, Shibata, Fine Line) significantly increase the contact area with the groove. They reveal more micro-detail and nuance. At the top, Micro Linear profiles (MicroLine, SAS) provide the largest contact area and the highest level of refinement. These sophisticated diamonds require a matching-quality preamplifier to reach their full potential.

Compatibility and setup

Choosing a cartridge means checking several parameters. The phono preamp must be compatible with the cartridge’s output level (MM, low-output MC, or high-output MC). Cartridge compliance—that is, the elasticity of its suspension—must match the tonearm’s effective mass. A light arm calls for high compliance (above 30), while a heavy arm requires low compliance (between 5 and 20). The arm/cartridge resonance frequency, ideally around 10 Hz, ensures optimal playback without unwanted resonances.

Specialized cartridges

Monophonic vinyl records and 78 rpm shellac discs require dedicated cartridges. 78s, cut with grooves four times wider, would be damaged by a standard cartridge. Some manufacturers like Ortofon offer interchangeable styli in their 2M range, allowing easy switching between stereo, mono, and 78 rpm playback without fully removing the cartridge.

Care and lifespan

A stylus maintains optimal performance for about 1000 hours, provided the turntable is properly set up and records are clean. Beyond that, the first signs of wear include audible distortion and loss of treble. On MM cartridges, the user can easily replace the stylus. MC cartridges require a factory service, with some manufacturers offering a trade-in allowance for the old cartridge.
