The MA100 is a stereo amplifier manufactured by Atoll Electronique, based in Normandy. It measures 320 × 230 × 83 mm and weighs 4 kg. Two 6,800 μF filtering capacitors, providing a total capacity of 16,600 μF, ensure substantial energy reserves. This high capacity enables the amplifier to respond instantly to transient demands in the musical signal, particularly in the bass where current requirements are significant. The 2 μs rise time is evidence of this responsiveness, ensuring faithful reproduction of instrumental attacks.
The rear panel of the MA100 includes two RCA inputs and two RCA outputs, allowing several amplifiers to be daisy-chained or a subwoofer to be driven. The four gold-plated speaker binding posts are located at the upper left and right corners of the rear panel. This layout makes wiring easier by keeping speaker cables away from sensitive circuits.
A 12 V trigger input in mini-jack format allows the amplifier to be switched on and off automatically together with a compatible preamplifier. This feature is particularly useful with Atoll’s HD100, HD120, and MS120, all of which provide a trigger output specifically designed to control the MA100. This saves the user from having to perform multiple operations each time they use the system.
A selector on the rear panel allows you to choose between standard stereo mode and bridged mono mode. In the latter configuration, the amplifier uses both channels to power a single speaker, raising the available power to 150 W into 8 ohms. This option opens the door to vertical bi-amping setups, where each speaker is driven by its own MA100 configured in mono.
The MA100 was originally designed to be paired with the HD100 and HD120 preamplifier/DAC/headphone amplifiers. These compact units, with the same width, form a complete stereo system with the MA100 that fits on a single shelf. The HD100 provides analog and digital inputs up to 24-bit/192 kHz, while the HD120 adds Bluetooth connectivity. The MS120 network player, also in compact format, is another natural source for the MA100. This device incorporates a high-resolution DAC, multiple digital inputs, USB ports, and network connectivity for access to streaming services. Beyond these “official” pairings, the MA100 can of course be used with any preamplifier that has a line output. Its high input impedance and suitable sensitivity make it compatible with the majority of preamplifiers on the market. In home cinema setups, it is well suited to powering surround speakers or height channels, bringing Atoll’s characteristic musicality to these often-overlooked channels.
Active bi-amping configurations deserve special mention. By using two MA100 units, it becomes possible to power the bass and treble sections of a pair of speakers separately, provided the speakers are designed for this purpose. This approach removes the internal passive crossovers from the speakers, allowing more direct control of the drivers. Some users go as far as employing three MA100 units for active tri-amping, which then requires an external active crossover to split the frequencies.
Yes, the MA100 is particularly well suited to bi-amping. You simply need one MA100 per speaker, each configured in mono mode via the rear selector. One channel powers the bass range, the other the treble range. This setup requires speakers designed for bi-amping and, ideally, an active crossover upstream to split the frequencies.
In bridged mode, the amplifier delivers 150 W into 8 ohms. It is then advisable to avoid speakers with an impedance lower than 8 ohms so as not to overload the output stages. In standard stereo mode, 4-ohm speakers pose no problem.
Like any amplifier that operates partly in class A, the MA100 reaches its optimal operating state after about fifteen minutes. The components achieve thermal stability and the bias of the output stages becomes constant. You can, of course, listen immediately, but a slight improvement can be heard after this period.
Yes, internal protections prevent damage to the circuits in the event of a short circuit on the speaker outputs. The amplifier automatically goes into protection mode if an anomaly is detected. It is still important to check cable quality before powering the unit on.
The amplifier can remain powered on continuously, and its standby consumption is moderate. The trigger function allows it to be controlled automatically from a compatible preamplifier. For occasional use, however, it is preferable to switch it off completely using the rear power switch.
The 10 watts in class A correspond to a fairly substantial listening level in a medium-sized room with speakers of standard sensitivity (86–88 dB). Most domestic listening takes place within this range, thus benefiting from the low distortion characteristic of class A.

Excellent “little” amp given its size.
Hooked up to the front channels of a Yamaha Dolby Surround amp and there’s no question or hesitation: you go from a rather ordinary sound by comparison to a completely different level of listening. More lively, full from top to bottom, realistic. (Here on B&Ws)
