The HD100 from Atoll Electronique combines three functions in a compact format: digital-to-analog converter (DAC), headphone amplifier, and preamplifier. Designed and manufactured in Normandy, this device showcases the brand’s expertise to offer a versatile solution for users attentive to audio quality. Its 1.4 W output at 32 ohms, combined with a carefully engineered power supply, allows it to drive a wide range of headphones while ensuring balanced sound reproduction.
Atoll’s philosophy is evident in every detail of the HD100. The audio stages operate in pure class A without operational amplifiers, using TIP31C and TIP32C transistors mounted on heatsinks with an ingenious passive cooling system. This approach ensures linear amplification and minimal distortion, even at high levels.
The digital core is built around the Burr Brown PCM5102 converter, renowned for its excellent value for money. This chip delivers its signals in direct current, a technical feature that requires specific processing but enhances signal purity. High-quality MKP coupling capacitors, specifically ClarityCap models rated at 10 µF/160V, ensure faithful transmission of musical nuances.
The power supply is another highlight, featuring three independent linear transformers and eight separate regulated supplies. This complex architecture prevents interference between the digital and analog sections, guaranteeing optimal channel separation and preserved dynamics.
The HD100 offers generous connectivity suited to modern setups. The USB-B input accepts PCM streams up to 24-bit/96 kHz, while the coaxial and optical S/PDIF inputs handle resolutions up to 24-bit/192 kHz. This deliberate differentiation favors the stability of the USB connection over pure performance.
The two analog RCA inputs allow integration of traditional sources such as CD players or turntables. The variable-level line output transforms the device into a true preamplifier, capable of directly driving a power amplifier or active speakers.
The dual 6.35 mm headphone outputs allow two people to listen simultaneously. The exceptionally low 1-ohm output impedance ensures optimal control of the transducers, even in shared configuration. This rare technical feature in this segment guarantees faithful reproduction regardless of the headphones used.
With its nominal power of 1.4 W at 32 ohms and dynamic capacity of 6.8 W, the HD100 easily drives high-impedance headphones such as the Sennheiser HD800 or planar magnetic models from Audeze. The generous current reserve, unusual for a headphone amplifier, allows fortissimo passages to be reproduced without dynamic compression.
The HD100’s versatility is fully expressed in its ability to evolve with your system. Paired with the MA100 amplifier from the same brand, it forms a compact chain with remarkable performance. This setup takes advantage of the 12V trigger output to synchronize device power-on, creating a coherent and ergonomic system.
For music lovers on the go, the HD100 excels as an external DAC connected to a computer. Its automatic recognition eliminates the need for specific driver installation, simplifying integration into existing computer systems.
The 4 mm thick brushed anodized aluminum front panel reflects the attention to detail. This finish, resistant to scratches and corrosion, maintains its appearance over the years. The steel chassis provides effective electromagnetic shielding, protecting sensitive circuits from external interference.
The user interface prioritizes simplicity, with an ALPS volume potentiometer offering precise logarithmic progression. The source selection buttons and LED indicator allow for intuitive daily use. An optional remote control completes the ergonomics for remote volume and source selection.
Handcrafted in the Brecey workshops, each unit undergoes rigorous quality control. Every device is carefully assembled with components selected for their sonic qualities and reliability. This typically French approach favors durability over mass production.
Absolutely. Its 1.4 W output at 32 ohms and low 1-ohm output impedance allow it to efficiently drive even the most demanding headphones, including 600-ohm models. The generous current reserve ensures preserved dynamics even with power-hungry transducers.
Yes, the variable-level line output allows the HD100 to be used as a preamplifier in a complete hi-fi system. It can directly drive a power amplifier or active speakers, maintaining its sonic qualities in this configuration.
The HD120 includes a Bluetooth receiver and supports higher USB resolutions (24-bit/192 kHz versus 24-bit/96 kHz). The HD100 focuses on wired connections with optimized value for money.
Yes, the two 6.35 mm jack outputs allow two people to listen at the same time. The low output impedance ensures preserved sound quality in shared configuration, with no impact on musicality.
No, the HD100 is limited to PCM formats. This technical limitation reflects Atoll’s design choices, prioritizing stability and musicality over exhaustive format support.
The USB-B input allows direct connection without the need for specific driver installation. The HD100 is automatically recognized by Windows, macOS, and Linux systems, simplifying its integration as an external DAC.

Used so far as a headphone amplifier, I can only be pleased with this purchase. It powers all my headphones effortlessly. The sound is very decent, a bit dry at times, but this is not strictly a flaw; it’s just its character. I’d like to pair it with an MA100 amplifier in the near future to build my main HiFi system.
