The Cambridge Audio Minx Min22 are compact satellite speakers, measuring 78 x 154 x 85 mm and weighing 750 grams. They are designed to deliver sound reproduction suited to their small size. Developed at Cambridge Audio’s research and development center in London, they combine meticulous acoustic engineering with understated design.
They feature fourth-generation BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) technology, which enables sound dispersion up to 180 degrees. This characteristic aims to provide even sound reproduction across different listening areas. The Min22 can be used in a multichannel home theater system or as main speakers in a workspace, ideally paired with a subwoofer.
Balanced Mode Radiator technology marks a break from traditional speaker designs. Unlike conventional drivers whose diaphragm remains rigid and moves like a piston, BMR combines two distinct operating modes. For low frequencies, it works like a traditional speaker with pistonic movement. For higher frequencies, the diaphragm vibrates in complex horizontal modes, creating exceptionally wide dispersion.
This hybrid approach solves a fundamental problem of small speakers: excessive directivity in the treble. The square-shaped BMR drivers in the Min22 offer a surface area 30% larger than a circular driver of the same diameter. The diaphragm, made from a honeycomb-structured composite sandwich, is specifically designed to deform in a controlled way, allowing precise reproduction across the entire frequency range.
The 4th generation BMR drivers in the Min22 bring significant improvements. The larger magnet increases efficiency, while the driver excursion has been increased from 2.2 mm to 4 mm, enriching the lower midrange for better integration with a subwoofer. The more uniform diaphragm movement ensures even greater precision across the audible spectrum.
The Minx Min22 exemplify an uncompromising approach to construction. The acoustically damped ABS enclosure is coated with a high-gloss lacquer available in black or white, treated to resist scratches and maintain its new look over time. This piano finish gives the speakers a discreet elegance that blends seamlessly into any contemporary interior.
The most distinctive design element is the die-cast aluminum exoskeleton that holds the drivers. This metal structure is not just aesthetic: it stiffens the assembly and helps focus the sound forward, minimizing unwanted vibrations. This robust design partly explains why these small speakers can handle up to 200 watts of power without distortion.
Connections are made via high-quality screw terminals, compatible with the supplied banana plugs. A recessed threaded insert allows easy attachment of the included wall mount or one of many optional accessories. This attention to practical details greatly simplifies installation and system upgrades.
The acoustic performance of the Min22 invariably surprises on first listen. The two-way sealed design pairs a full-range BMR driver with a dedicated 58 mm woofer, offering a frequency response from 120 Hz to 20 kHz. While the bass range is limited, the speakers deliver faithful reproduction of mids and highs with remarkable clarity.
A sensitivity of 88-90 dB (depending on sources) allows decent output with modest amplifiers, though Cambridge Audio recommends amplification between 25 and 200 watts. The 8-ohm impedance ensures compatibility with most amplifiers on the market.
The 180-degree dispersion is the Min22’s main asset. This unique feature allows the speakers to be placed in unconventional positions—on shelves, wall-mounted at various heights, or even oriented horizontally—without significant loss of sound quality. Users consistently report a wide, immersive soundstage, with instrument placement precision that rivals much larger speakers.
The Min22 represent the culmination of several generations of development. Compared to the Min21, improvements focus mainly on the quality of the BMR driver and integration with subwoofers. Users who have upgraded report a smoother, more refined sound, with better instrument separation and an even wider soundstage.
Compared to the Min20, which used two BMR drivers instead of a BMR and a dedicated woofer, the philosophy is different. The Min22 favor better low-end management and superior dynamics, especially appreciated for home theater content. This evolution reflects Cambridge Audio’s learning on optimal use of BMR technology in ultra-compact speakers.
Technical improvements also include a reduction of the 8 kHz response peak present in earlier models, resulting in more natural reproduction of voices and acoustic instruments. The ability to maintain sonic coherence at high volume has also been significantly improved.
Using the Min22 requires pairing with a subwoofer, ideally one of Cambridge Audio’s Minx X201 or X301 models. The recommended crossover frequency is between 120 and 150 Hz, allowing the satellites to focus on their comfort zone while ensuring a seamless transition with the subwoofer.
For home theater, a popular setup is to use three Min22s at the front (left, center, right) with Min12s as surrounds. This approach maximizes the quality of the crucial center channel for dialogue, while maintaining perfect tonal consistency. The Min22 can be positioned horizontally under a TV to serve as a center speaker, thanks to the optional table stand.
In a stereo setup for music listening, two Min22s paired with a quality subwoofer create a surprisingly capable 2.1 system. The wide dispersion allows great placement flexibility, especially valuable in tight spaces like an office or bookshelf.
Technically possible, but strongly discouraged. With a crossover frequency at 120 Hz, the Min22 do not reproduce the bass needed for balanced listening. Without a subwoofer, the sound will seem thin and lack foundation, especially for music. Investing in a good subwoofer is essential to fully exploit these speakers’ potential.
The Min12 use only a single BMR driver, while the Min22 add a dedicated woofer. This two-way configuration offers better dynamics, higher power handling, and improved mid-bass management. The Min22 are better suited for medium to large rooms and demanding uses such as the center channel in home theater.
Thanks to the 180° dispersion, positioning is very flexible. For stereo listening, place them at ear height, 2 to 3 meters apart. In home theater, the center speaker can be tilted downward if placed above the screen. Surrounds benefit from being placed higher up, aimed at the listening area. The lack of a precise sweet spot greatly simplifies installation.
Absolutely, this is actually one of their preferred uses. Mounted horizontally on the table stand, they excel at reproducing dialogue thanks to the BMR driver’s midrange clarity. The wide dispersion ensures optimal intelligibility for all viewers, even those seated to the sides.
Cambridge Audio specifies a range of 25 to 200 watts. In practice, 50 watts per channel is more than enough for normal home use. Modern mid-range home theater amplifiers are perfectly suitable. The 8-ohm impedance and decent sensitivity make the Min22 easy to drive.

Beautiful aesthetics, however the sound quality is on par with the size of the product. The main appeal of these speakers is their integration or for an easy to integrate home theater system.
