The PR200 Signature from Atoll Electronique is a stereo preamplifier designed for a hi-fi system with separate components. It features a substantial power supply, comprehensive connectivity, and can be upgraded with additional options. It replaces the PR200 SE and incorporates the developments of the Signature range. The unit is manufactured in France.
Built to last
The PR200 Signature has a discreet yet assertive presence. Its 4 mm thick brushed aluminum front panel follows the aesthetic codes of the Signature range, introduced in 2018. This front, engraved with the logo and wave-shaped graphic signature, integrates a low-consumption OLED display that indicates the selected input among seven LEDs. The 1.5 mm steel chassis ensures overall rigidity that limits mechanical vibrations. The perforated top promotes heat dissipation, even though a preamplifier runs much cooler than a power amplifier.
At the center sits the motorized ALPS volume potentiometer, a component renowned for its reliability and low noise level. On the right, two buttons allow direct input selection. All settings are also accessible from the optional remote control, identical to the one that operates the other products in the Signature range (integrated amplifiers, CD players, DAC, tuner).
The rear panel reveals comprehensive connectivity: five RCA analog inputs (auxiliary, CD, tuner, tape, DVD), a By-Pass input for an already preamplified source, a Tape output with monitoring loop, two preamplifier outputs (useful for connecting two power amplifiers simultaneously or for considering bi-amping), a 6.35 mm headphone output, and a 12V Trigger output to synchronize power-on with other components in the system.
An oversized power supply serving dynamics
Atoll has deliberately oversized the PR200 Signature’s components. The 340 VA toroidal transformer provides an unusually large current reserve for a preamplifier. This powerful power supply is paired with a 32,914 µF filtering capacity, distributed across low-ESR capacitors.
This robust power supply section ensures sustained dynamics from bass to treble and enables the preamplifier to drive any power amplifier effectively, even on demanding musical passages. The double-sided PCBs with nickel/gold finish host audio stages using discrete components, wired along the shortest possible paths to minimize losses and interference. Coupling capacitors and high-performance heatsinks complete this architecture designed for signal fidelity.
The 357 kΩ input impedance guarantees compatibility with virtually all analog sources. The 100 mV sensitivity allows operation with moderate-level signals without loss of information. The 2.5 µs rise time and 5 Hz to 100 kHz bandwidth ensure a coherent response across the entire audible spectrum and beyond. The 100 dBA signal-to-noise ratio attests to a very quiet noise floor.
Modularity anticipating future needs
The PR200 Signature stands out for its upgradeability. The auxiliary input can accommodate either a P50 (moving magnet) or P100 (moving magnet or configurable moving coil) phono preamplifier board. These modules allow you to connect a turntable directly without using an external phono preamp.
More unusually, the PR200 Signature can house a DA200 digital board (or DA100 depending on your needs), which is uncommon for a purely analog preamplifier. The DA200 includes a Bluetooth receiver, two coaxial inputs and two optical inputs (24-bit/192 kHz), as well as a USB-B input compatible with PCM up to 384 kHz and DSD64/DSD128. The AKM AK4490 digital-to-analog converter and XMOS USB interface, specifically programmed for Atoll, ensure high-quality conversion.
This modular approach lets you build a scalable system: you can start with a conventional analog preamplifier, then add a DAC board as needed, or even combine a DAC board and a phono board. This flexibility prevents premature obsolescence and supports changing usage habits without requiring full replacement of the unit.
From SE to Signature
The PR200 Signature succeeds the PR200 SE in Atoll’s catalog. The move to the Signature range, launched in 2018 for several of the brand’s models (IN50, IN80, IN100, IN200, CD200, DR200, AM200), draws on innovations introduced with the high-end IN300. Atoll’s engineers spent many hours listening to validate each modification and ensure its real contribution to musicality.
While the basic circuit design remains similar, several components have been upgraded: the PCBs are now double-sided nickel/gold, the coupling capacitors have evolved, the heatsinks are more efficient, and thermal protection has been improved. The OLED display replaces the old LED system for better contrast and lower power consumption. The new 4 mm aluminum front panel provides increased rigidity and a more refined finish.
These changes, sometimes modest on paper, contribute to a more accomplished overall result. Users who have moved from the PR200 SE to the PR200 Signature generally report improved transparency, detail, and naturalness of the soundstage.
Practical uses and system matching
The PR200 Signature naturally pairs with Atoll power amplifiers, particularly the AM200 Signature, with which it shares aesthetic codes and technical philosophy. Together they form a coherent separates system, where each component benefits from its own power supply and chassis, for a compact footprint and easier maintenance compared with more high-end solutions.
That said, the PR200 Signature is not limited to products from the Normandy-based brand. Its neutral character and well-designed output stage allow it to drive power amplifiers from other manufacturers without difficulty. The two preamp outputs enable some unconventional setups: connecting two different power amps for comparative testing, feeding an active subwoofer in parallel with the main amplification, or even implementing bi-amping on compatible speakers.
The By-Pass input proves useful in a hybrid hi-fi/home theater system: it lets you connect an audio-video processor while bypassing the preamplifier’s circuits. The processor’s preamplified signal then goes directly to the power amplification, while the PR200 Signature handles the other music sources. The 12V Trigger output simplifies system automation: turning on the preamplifier can trigger the power amplifier and other compatible equipment.
The 6.35 mm headphone output provides a discreet option for late-night or focused listening. While it does not replace a dedicated headphone amplifier for demanding models, it works perfectly well with the majority of home headphones.
