The Cambridge Audio EVO 150SE marks a new milestone in the development of compact amplifier-streamers. It combines British expertise in high-fidelity audio with the expectations of modern digital listening. This special edition builds on the features of the EVO 150, renowned for its design, while introducing refinements to the Class D amplification and overall appearance. With 2×150W of power, an ESS Sabre DAC, and the fourth-generation StreamMagic platform, it targets music lovers seeking a balance between sound quality and ease of use.
A Design Tailored for the Modern Era
The EVO 150SE retains the iconic proportions of its predecessor: a 12-by-12-inch square format, directly inspired by vinyl record sleeves. This dimension is no accident—it makes integration into bookshelves and contemporary audio furniture easy, while creating a symbolic link to the analog world.
The magnetic side panels are one of the device’s major aesthetic assets. Available in real wood for a warm approach or in brushed industrial finish for a more modern style, they allow you to adapt the look to your environment. This modularity is more than a gimmick: it reflects a thoughtful approach to the product’s long-term visual appeal.
The 6.8-inch color display takes center stage on the front panel. Beyond showing album covers and playback information, it features retro-style virtual VU meters that add a hypnotic visual dimension to your listening experience. The dual concentric control knob, now adorned with Cambridge’s signature Lunar Grey finish, offers intuitive handling for volume and navigation.
A Reimagined Class D Amplification
The beating heart of the EVO 150SE lies in its Hypex NCOREx amplification modules, the result of a close collaboration between Cambridge Audio and Dutch specialist Hypex. These modules are not just off-the-shelf components: they have been meticulously “tuned by Cambridge,” as the manufacturer puts it, reflecting hundreds of hours of critical listening and fine adjustments in Cambridge Audio’s London labs.
This particular approach to Class D amplification aims to eliminate the shortcomings traditionally associated with this technology, notably a certain lack of warmth and emotional engagement. The new dedicated operational amplifier achieves ultra-low noise levels, preserving even the subtlest nuances of the musical signal. With 150 watts per channel into 8 ohms, the EVO 150SE is capable of driving most speakers on the market, from nearfield monitors to substantial floorstanders.
The desired sound signature prioritizes musicality over pure technical performance. Cambridge Audio has worked on tonal balance to deliver a sound that is both detailed and coherent, avoiding the pitfall of an overly analytical presentation that could diminish long-term listening enjoyment.
Uncompromising High-Resolution Streaming
Digital-to-analog conversion is handled by an ESS Sabre ES9018K2M chip, renowned for its linearity and low distortion. This architecture supports files up to 32-bit/384 kHz PCM and up to DSD128, covering all high-resolution formats available on the market.
The fourth-generation StreamMagic platform serves as the interface between the user and streaming services. Developed by Cambridge Audio over several decades, it natively supports Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, and Deezer, while also supporting AirPlay 2, Chromecast, and Roon Ready protocols. This versatility avoids compatibility frustrations and ensures seamless access to music catalogs.
Dual-band Wi-Fi ensures a stable connection even in crowded environments, while Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD codec maintains high audio quality for mobile sources. The StreamMagic app for iOS and Android centralizes control, allowing you to manage queues, favorites, and device settings from anywhere in the house.
Versatility That Delights
The EVO 150SE is not limited to streaming. Its built-in phono stage for moving magnet cartridges lets you connect a turntable directly, creating a natural bridge between analog and digital sources. Balanced XLR and RCA inputs offer connection options for high-end external sources.
The inclusion of an HDMI ARC input transforms the device into an audio solution for your TV—a particularly relevant feature in setups where space is at a premium. Preamp and subwoofer outputs allow you to expand to a more complex configuration if your needs change.
This modular approach to use reflects a deep understanding of contemporary listening habits, where sources are multiplying and ease of use takes precedence over technical complexity.
What is the main difference between the EVO 150SE and the original EVO 150?
+
The EVO 150SE features new Hypex NCore amplification modules “Tuned by Cambridge” with an optimized operational amplifier for reduced noise. The design also benefits from aesthetic refinements, particularly in the control knob and finishes.
Can the EVO 150SE replace a complete traditional hi-fi system?
+
Absolutely. With its integrated amplification, high-resolution DAC, comprehensive streaming platform, and multiple inputs, it is an all-in-one solution capable of rivaling much more expensive separate systems.
How good is the built-in phono stage?
+
The phono stage for moving magnet cartridges delivers solid performance for this price range. It is perfectly suited to entry-level and mid-range turntables, though audiophiles with high-end cartridges may prefer a dedicated phono preamp.
Can the EVO 150SE be used as a preamplifier only?
+
Yes, the preamp outputs allow you to connect an external power amplifier. This setup can be useful for driving particularly demanding speakers or for bi-amping.
Are the side panels available separately?
+
Cambridge Audio does offer replacement panels and alternative finishes, allowing you to change the device’s appearance as your tastes or environment evolve.

Initially I had opted for a NAD amplifier. After the seller's opinion and advice and according to my speakers (Quad Revela 2, rather demanding and power-hungry), I let myself be guided toward the Cambridge Evo 150se. The price may seem prohibitive, although maybe not. In 5 minutes it is connected, in 10 minutes after updating I can test the beast. And there, a real slap in the face, my speakers are enhanced, no more need for the subwoofer. The sound is clean and of impeccable quality for me and my style of music. Indeed warm, rounded, the mids are great, the highs not too aggressive especially with the Quad ribbon tweeters. The bass is great. Come on, I push the amplifier to 90% of the volume and the sound remains flawless, no deterioration, really great. I recommend the product, the connectivity is complete: HDMI arc, wifi, bluetooth, RCA, etc...
