perfect for me, all the connections fit, what I’m missing is a left-right balance adjustment. otherwise a great piece of equipment.

The Tangent Ampster BT III represents the culmination of a lineage that has redefined the codes of compact amplification since 2017. This third iteration of the Ampster combines the Scandinavian philosophy of clean design with modern connectivity tailored to today’s audiovisual ecosystem. With the strategic addition of an HDMI ARC input and a dedicated RIAA phono input, Tangent turns its famous compact form factor into the true nerve center of your hi-fi and home theater setup.
The Ampster BT III’s matte black metal chassis continues the visual signature established since Tangent’s founding in 1996. Measuring just 200 mm wide and 65 mm high, this minimalist black box dispenses with all superfluous ornamentation. The side vents, drawn with geometric precision, contribute as much to heat dissipation as to the product’s visual identity. The front panel maintains this formal purity with a single multifunction knob and a discreet row of indicator LEDs. This approach echoes Danish design principles where form naturally follows function without ever betraying it.
The build reveals special attention to practical details. The speaker terminals accept banana plugs while remaining sized to integrate harmoniously into the compact chassis. The rear panel organizes connections with intuitive logic, grouping digital inputs on one side and analog connections on the other. This layout greatly facilitates integration into tight spaces, whether it’s a narrow TV stand or a desktop shelf.
The integration of an HDMI ARC/CEC input is the main evolution of this third generation. This bidirectional interface not only retrieves the TV’s audio stream but also allows the amplifier to be controlled directly from the TV remote via the CEC protocol. This feature radically transforms everyday ergonomics by eliminating the usual juggling between multiple remotes. The signal travels digitally to the CS4344 converter, ensuring lossless transmission of sound from movies, series, and video games.
The RIAA phono input marks a return to analog roots in a format usually dedicated to all-digital. Tangent thus acknowledges the vinyl renaissance among a new generation of enthusiasts seeking compact solutions without giving up the turntable. The built-in RIAA correction circuit eliminates the need for an external preamplifier, significantly simplifying the audio chain. Two RCA line inputs accommodate additional sources such as a CD player or a dedicated audio streamer.
Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX-HD represents a significant step up from the previous model’s Bluetooth 4.0 aptX. This technical evolution results in wireless transmission capable of carrying high-resolution audio streams up to 24-bit/48 kHz with minimal latency. The increased range and improved stability of the 5.1 protocol ensure a reliable connection even through typical household obstacles. The external antenna optimizes reception in challenging environments.
The rated 2 × 50 watts into 4 ohms relies on an amplification topology that remains mysterious but generates enough heat to suggest Class AB rather than pure Class D. This power—identical to the previous model but with better thermal management according to Tangent—is more than sufficient to fill medium-sized rooms with standard-sensitivity speakers. A signal-to-noise ratio above 95 dBA attests to a carefully designed amplification stage that preserves recording dynamics.
The digital-to-analog converter CS4344 handles signals up to 24-bit/192 kHz, an ambitious spec for this price range. This high-resolution decoding capability makes perfect sense with the Toslink optical input, which can receive studio-quality digital streams from a computer or a network player. The frequency response spans 20 Hz to 20 kHz, covering the entire audible spectrum without excessive coloration.
The parametric equalizer offers ±8 dB of adjustment in 2 dB steps, focused on the critical 120 Hz region with a knee point beyond 1 kHz. This configuration allows you to correct acoustic issues related to speaker placement or room resonance modes without distorting the mids and highs. The subwoofer output with a 250 Hz low-pass filter and a 12 dB/octave slope simplifies integrating a sub to extend low-frequency response.
The Ampster BT III fits into a complete family of identically sized components including the preAmp III, the PowerAmpster III, the Tuner III, and the CD III. Stacked together, these elements form a modular hi-fi system occupying less than 21 cm of total height. This modular approach lets you start with the amplifier alone and gradually expand the system according to needs and budget. The included system remote controls all devices in the range, avoiding remote control clutter.
The included external infrared sensor expands installation options, allowing you to place the amplifier in a closed cabinet while maintaining remote control functionality. This attention to practical details reflects Tangent’s approach, which considers everyday ergonomics an integral part of overall quality. Auto power-on functions triggered by detecting HDMI, Bluetooth, or analog signals reinforce this philosophy of seamless use.
The HDMI ARC input is precisely the main strength of this third generation. It automatically retrieves the TV’s sound, whether from built-in streaming apps, a game console, or a set-top box. The CEC protocol even lets you adjust the volume with the TV remote, creating seamless integration.
Beyond the obvious addition of the HDMI ARC input, this new version includes a true RIAA phono input absent from the previous model. Bluetooth moves to version 5.1 with aptX-HD support for superior wireless transmission quality. Tangent also announces optimized thermal management.
The RIAA phono input indeed allows you to connect a turntable equipped with a moving magnet (MM) cartridge. The built-in RIAA correction circuit applies the necessary equalization curve, eliminating the need for an external phono preamplifier. Turntables with moving coil (MC) cartridges will still require a suitable preamp.
The amplifier continuously monitors the HDMI, Bluetooth, and analog inputs even in standby. As soon as a signal is detected on one of these sources, the unit automatically wakes up and switches to the active input. This function requires the amplifier to be in standby, not completely powered off via the mains switch.
Power depends less on speaker type than on sensitivity and impedance. Floorstanders with average sensitivity (87–90 dB) will perform well in rooms up to 30 m². The key is to match listening volume to the amplifier’s capabilities to avoid distortion at the power limit.
This decoding capability mainly ensures comfortable headroom for all current formats. High-resolution files via the optical input will receive optimal treatment, but the audible difference will largely depend on speaker quality and room acoustics.
