Overview
Four years after the Momentum 4, Sennheiser evolves its wireless on-the-go lineup with a fifth installment that plays on two fronts: pushing sound quality and noise reduction further, and betting on longevity with a user-replaceable battery. The headphone retains the balanced signature of previous Momentum models, gains in practical endurance, and moves to wireless high-resolution audio thanks to aptX Lossless.
A sleek, flat-folding design
The Momentum 5 features a circumaural shell in matte plastic with understated finishes, a fabric-covered headband, and swiveling ear cups. Three colorways are available: black, white, and Denim. The structure folds flat to slip into the included hard case, and the weight stays under 300 grams (290 g exactly), which makes a noticeable difference during long listening sessions. The memory foam ear pads provide decent passive isolation without clamping the head, and removing them gives access to the battery via a simple Phillips screwdriver. This repairability approach extends the headphone’s useful lifespan well beyond the wear of a conventional battery. Sennheiser designs the product in Germany and assembles it in China.
42 mm drivers and balanced signature
Inside, Sennheiser fits a 42 mm dynamic driver in the lineage of the audiophile HDB 630. The signature stays true to the Momentum series DNA: bass that reaches deep with a slight boost in the sub-bass, neutral and clear midrange, natural highs with a few rare resonances in the upper end of the spectrum. The brand announces a frequency response extending to 40 kHz over both Bluetooth and USB, compared to 22 kHz on the previous generation, opening the door to full exploitation of wireless hi-res codecs. The sensitivity level reaches 108 dB SPL with total harmonic distortion below 0.2%.
Hybrid noise reduction and eight microphones
Sennheiser doubles the number of microphones compared to the Momentum 4: four per ear cup, totaling eight MEMS microphones, dedicated to both adaptive active noise reduction and transparency mode. The brand announces attenuation of mid-frequency noise up to three times greater than the previous generation — a range where ANC headphones are generally less effective than with engine rumble or ventilation noise. Transparency mode lets the surrounding environment through naturally, allowing users to catch a station announcement or a quick conversation without removing the headphone. Digital beamforming on the microphones improves voice pickup for calls and voice assistants, across a range of 20 Hz to 15 kHz.
57 hours of battery life and removable battery
Endurance remains one of the model’s strong points: Sennheiser announces 57 hours of listening with active noise reduction, compared to 60 hours on the Momentum 4. The slight decrease is the trade-off for the additional microphones. A full charge takes approximately two hours via the USB-C port, and ten minutes of charging is enough to recover up to seven hours of listening. The real structural change lies beneath the right ear pad: the 700 mAh lithium-ion battery is accessible with a standard Phillips screwdriver. Sennheiser sells replacement batteries separately, placing the headphone in a longevity-focused category that is rare in the premium wireless segment.
Bluetooth 5.4, multipoint, and hi-res codecs
On the connectivity side, the headphone features a Bluetooth 5.4 chip with multipoint, capable of simultaneously managing two sources — for example, a smartphone and a laptop. It is compatible with Snapdragon Sound and supports a wide range of codecs: SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, and aptX Lossless, the latter transmitting CD-quality lossless streams on compatible devices. A 3.5 mm wired input remains available with the included cable, and the USB-C port also accepts digital audio streams.
Personalization via the Smart Control Plus app
The Smart Control Plus app, available on iOS and Android, provides access to an eight-band graphic equalizer adjustable in 0.1 dB steps and a sound personalization system generated from the listener’s listening preferences. It also manages Bluetooth connections and software updates. The physical controls on the right ear cup handle playback, volume, calls, and switching between ANC, transparency, and off modes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the sound difference compared to the Momentum 4?
Sennheiser retains a balanced signature but reworks the bass, which extends lower with a slight perceptible boost, and extends the frequency response up to 40 kHz. The 8-band equalizer with 0.1 dB steps also allows for finer adjustment than on the previous generation.
Does transparency mode allow you to hold a conversation without taking off the headphones?
Yes, transparency mode reproduces outside sounds naturally thanks to the eight MEMS microphones. A short conversation, an audio announcement, or a voice call come through without discomfort, without having to interrupt the current listening.
Is the Smart Control Plus app essential for using the headphones?
No, the headphones work immediately after Bluetooth pairing, without any prior installation. The app remains useful for the 8-band equalizer, sound customization, and installing software updates, which are not available through other channels.
How many devices can be connected simultaneously in multipoint?
The headphones manage two audio sources simultaneously via Bluetooth multipoint. In practical terms, they can stay connected to a computer for a video conference and to a phone for incoming calls at the same time, without interruption or manual reconnection.
How does battery replacement work on a daily basis?
You need to remove the cushion from the right earcup, then unscrew a few Phillips screws to access the 700 mAh battery. The operation is carried out with a standard screwdriver, without any proprietary tool. Sennheiser sells replacement batteries separately.
Is the analog audio cable included with the headphones?
Yes, a 3.5 mm jack cable is included in the box, along with the USB-C cable and the hard carrying case. The headphones can therefore be used in wired mode with a source that does not have Bluetooth, or when the battery is drained.
What’s included in the box upon delivery?
The headphones come with a hard carrying case, a USB-C cable for charging and digital audio, a 3.5 mm analog audio cable, and the user documentation.
