Overview
Four years after the Momentum 4, Sennheiser is evolving its portable Bluetooth lineup with a fifth installment that works on two fronts: pushing sound quality and noise cancellation further, and betting on longevity with a user-replaceable battery. The headphones retain the balanced signature of previous Momentum models, gain useful endurance, and move to high-resolution wireless audio thanks to aptX Lossless.
A discreet design that folds flat
The Momentum 5 uses a circumaural matte plastic shell with understated finishes, a fabric-covered headband, and swiveling earcups. Three colorways are available: black, white, and Denim. The structure folds flat to slip into the included hard case, and the weight stays under the 300-gram mark (290 g exactly), which is noticeable during long sessions. The memory foam earpads provide decent passive isolation without squeezing the head, and removing them gives access to the battery using a simple Phillips screwdriver. This repairability approach extends the useful life of the headphones well beyond the wear of a conventional battery. Sennheiser designs the product in Germany and assembles it in China.
42 mm transducers and a balanced signature
Inside, Sennheiser uses a 42 mm dynamic transducer in the lineage of the audiophile HDB 630. The signature remains faithful to the Momentum series DNA: bass that extends low with slight reinforcement in the very low end, neutral and clear mids, and natural highs with a few rare resonances in the upper spectrum. The brand announces a frequency response extending up to 40 kHz over Bluetooth as well as USB, compared with 22 kHz on the previous generation, which paves the way for full use of wireless hi-res codecs. Sensitivity reaches 108 dB SPL with harmonic distortion below 0.2%.
Hybrid noise cancellation and eight microphones
Sennheiser doubles the number of microphones compared with the Momentum 4: four per earcup, for a total of eight MEMS, dedicated both to adaptive active noise cancellation and transparency mode. The brand announces attenuation of mid-frequency noise up to three times greater than that of the previous generation, a range where ANC headphones are generally less effective than on engine hum or ventilation noise. Transparency mode lets the surroundings come through naturally so you can follow a station announcement or a quick conversation without removing the headphones. Digital beamforming on the microphones improves voice pickup for calls and voice assistants, across a range of 20 Hz to 15 kHz.
57 hours of battery life and removable battery
Endurance remains one of the model’s strong points: Sennheiser announces 57 hours of listening with active noise cancellation, compared with 60 hours on the Momentum 4. The slight drop is the trade-off for the additional microphones. A full charge takes about two hours via the USB-C port, and ten minutes of charging is enough to recover up to seven hours of listening. The real structural change is under the right earpad: the 700 mAh lithium-ion battery is accessible with a standard Phillips screwdriver. Sennheiser sells replacement batteries separately, placing the headphones in a longevity-oriented approach that is rare in the premium wireless segment.
Bluetooth 5.4, multipoint, and hi-res codecs
On the connectivity side, the headphones feature a Bluetooth 5.4 chip with multipoint, capable of handling two sources simultaneously, for example a smartphone and a laptop. They are compatible with Snapdragon Sound and support a wide range of codecs: SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, and aptX Lossless, the latter transmitting lossless CD-quality streams on compatible devices. A 3.5 mm wired input remains available with the included cable, and the USB-C port also accepts digital audio streams.
Customization via the Smart Control Plus app
The Smart Control Plus app, available on iOS and Android, provides access to an eight-band graphic equalizer adjustable in 0.1 dB steps and to a sound personalization system generated from the listener’s listening preferences. It also manages Bluetooth connections and software updates. The physical controls on the right earcup handle playback, volume, calls, and switching between ANC, transparency, and off modes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference in sound compared with the Momentum 4?
Sennheiser retains a balanced signature but reworks the bass, which reaches lower with a slight noticeable boost, and extends the frequency response up to 40 kHz. The 8-band equalizer with 0.1 dB steps also allows finer adjustment than on the previous generation.
Does transparency mode allow you to have a conversation without taking off the headphones?
Yes, transparency mode reproduces outside sounds naturally thanks to the eight MEMS microphones. A short conversation, an audio announcement, or a voice call comes through without inconvenience, without having to interrupt the listening in progress.
Is the Smart Control Plus app essential for using the headphones?
No, the headphones work immediately after Bluetooth pairing, with no prior installation required. The app remains useful for the 8-band equalizer, sound customization, and installing software updates, which are not available through other channels.
How many devices can be connected simultaneously in multipoint?
The headset manages two audio sources simultaneously via Bluetooth multipoint. In practical terms, it can stay connected to a computer for a video conference and to a phone for incoming calls at the same time, without interruption or manual reconnection.
How does battery replacement work on a daily basis?
You need to remove the cushion from the right earcup, then undo a few Phillips screws to access the 700 mAh battery. The procedure is done with a standard screwdriver, with no proprietary tool required. Sennheiser sells replacement batteries separately.
Is the analog audio cable included with the headphones?
Yes, a 3.5 mm jack cable is included in the box, along with the USB-C cable and the hard carrying case. The headphones can therefore be used in wired mode with a source that lacks Bluetooth, or when the battery is dead.
What’s included in the box upon delivery?
The headset comes with a hard carrying case, a USB-C cable for charging and digital audio, a 3.5 mm analog audio cable, and user documentation.
