HDR10+

HDR10+ is an open, royalty-free HDR format standardized by SMPTE. It enhances 4K video with dynamic metadata transmitted scene by scene, sometimes frame by frame, whereas static HDR applies a single setting to the entire film. The TV adjusts luminance and contrast for each shot, preserving detail in both highlights and dark areas.

The signal is based on 10-bit encoding and the BT.2020 color space, for an extended dynamic range and a wider palette than SDR. HDR10+ remains backward compatible: a standard HDR10 display reads the stream while ignoring the dynamic metadata, with no loss of picture. The format was initiated by an industry consortium and is a free alternative to licensed HDR solutions.
