Pre-mounted Cartridges
Cartridges mounted on a headshell, also known as pre-mounted cartridges, offer a plug-and-play solution for equipping your turntable. Delivered already attached to a headshell compatible with the standard SME mount (1/2” format), they simplify installation and ensure correct alignment on S-shaped tonearms. This setup avoids the delicate cartridge mounting process and allows for quick replacement without complex adjustments. Learn more
What is a cartridge mounted on a headshell?
A cartridge mounted on a headshell is a phono cartridge pre-assembled on its mounting support (headshell). The headshell provides the link between the cartridge, which contains the stylus, and your turntable’s tonearm. This complete solution attaches directly to the tonearm via a universal SME standard bayonet mount, with dimensions of 8 mm in diameter and 12 mm in length.
Practical advantages
The main advantage of these pre-mounted cartridges lies in their ease of use. Mounting a standard cartridge requires carefully screwing the cartridge onto the headshell, connecting four delicate wires (red, white, green, blue), and precisely adjusting alignment. With a pre-mounted cartridge, these steps are already done at the factory to optimal specifications. You simply attach the headshell to the tonearm, perform the basic settings (tracking force, anti-skate), and you’re ready to play your records.
This configuration is especially appreciated by users who own multiple cartridges for different uses or types of vinyl. Swapping cartridges becomes as quick as changing a lens on a camera: just unlock the bayonet and clip in the new pre-mounted cartridge.
Compatibility and headshell selection
Mounted cartridges are generally compatible with S-shaped tonearms, which are very common on hi-fi turntables. The total weight of the cartridge/headshell pair typically ranges between 15 and 25 grams. It is important to check that your tonearm supports this weight range. On certain models like Technics, an auxiliary weight may be required.
Headshells are made from lightweight, anti-resonant materials: aluminum, magnesium, special metal alloys, or wood. These materials contribute to sound quality by limiting unwanted vibrations. High-end models include pre-wired audiophile cables with gold-plated copper or PCOCC copper conductors to optimize signal transmission.
Pre-mounted MM and MC cartridges
Most headshell-mounted cartridges available use MM (moving magnet) technology, which is more common and less expensive than MC (moving coil) technology. MM cartridges offer an output level above 2 mV, compatible with most phono preamplifiers. The stylus can be replaced at end of life (an average of 600 to 700 hours of listening).
Among the flagship models on the French market, the Ortofon 2M Red pre-mounted on an SH-4 headshell is frequently found, a benchmark for its value for money. Audio-Technica also offers several models from its VM95 series in pre-mounted versions, as does Nagaoka with its MP-110H.
Installation and settings
Installing a pre-mounted cartridge is straightforward but requires some care. After attaching the headshell to the tonearm via the bayonet connection, level the turntable perfectly using a spirit level. Then set the tracking force using the tonearm counterweight, respecting the range recommended by the cartridge manufacturer (generally between 1.5 and 2.5 grams). The anti-skate should be adjusted according to this tracking force.
Fine alignment may be necessary depending on the tonearm and headshell used, but it remains less complex than with a standard cartridge since the cartridge is already correctly positioned on its support.
Upgrades and customization
Cartridges mounted on a headshell do not lock you into a final choice. On moving magnet models, the stylus remains interchangeable, allowing you to upgrade performance without buying the entire assembly again. For example, an Ortofon 2M Red can accept a 2M Blue or 2M Silver stylus to improve reading precision and detail retrieval.
If you want to go further, it is possible to replace the headshell wires with higher-performance audiophile models. Some manufacturers also offer accessories to adapt cartridges with specific mounts (P or SPU) to a standard headshell.
Who is it for?
Cartridges mounted on a headshell are aimed at several user profiles: those new to vinyl who want a simple, hassle-free solution; audiophiles who regularly change cartridges depending on the type of record; DJs using turntables with S-shaped tonearms; and owners of vintage turntables who want to upgrade their system without technical complications.
This solution represents an excellent compromise between performance, ease of use, and flexibility to get the most out of your vinyl collection.
