Why use anti-vibration dampers?

Vibrations are the invisible enemy of any hi-fi system. They come from multiple sources: the external environment, the speakers themselves, the internal components of the devices (transformers, motors), or even the surface your equipment sits on. Without treatment, these vibrations cause distortion, tonal coloration, and a loss of precision in audio reproduction.

The most sensitive devices are analog sources, especially turntables. The cartridge picks up the slightest vibration like a microphone, turning cabinet or floor resonances into audible noise. But digital sources, amplifiers, and speakers also benefit from effective decoupling.

Different types of anti-vibration solutions

Decoupling feet and pads are placed directly under the devices. Easy to use, they suit tight budgets and already provide noticeable improvement. Rubber, silicone, or composite materials absorb vibrations between the device and its support.

Anti-resonance platforms and shelves are more sophisticated solutions. Some combine multiple materials (end-grain wood, aluminum, dense fibers) to trap vibrations at different frequencies. Others integrate ball-bearing mechanisms or magnetic systems for optimal decoupling.

Which materials to prioritize?

Each material has specific properties. Sorbothane and elastomer excel at absorbing high frequencies. Synthetic rubber and silicone offer a versatile, well-balanced compromise. Aluminum and stainless steel act as conductors to dissipate vibrational energy into a massive support. Composite materials (ceramic, graphite polymer) combine several approaches.

How to choose your dampers

Several criteria come into play. The weight of the device determines the load each support can handle. A lightweight turntable needs different feet than a 30 kg amplifier. The type of surface (wooden cabinet, glass shelf, parquet floor) also influences the choice. Finally, your expectations will guide you toward entry-level solutions or high-end systems for audiophiles.

For turntables, prioritize strict decoupling from the support, ideally with a wall-mounted shelf or a heavy anti-resonance base. Tube amplifiers benefit from feet that absorb internal vibrations. Floorstanding speakers gain definition with coupling spikes on a heavy support or with decoupling feet, depending on the setup.
