Overview
This pack brings together the soundbar Ray, two Era 100 SL speakers, and the subwoofer Sub Mini to create a 5.1 setup with no cables between components. The four devices communicate via Wi‑Fi, are configured from a single app, and work equally well for movies and for multiroom music. Sonos here offers its entry‑level surround configuration, designed for medium‑sized rooms.
A compact soundbar that fits anywhere
The Sonos Ray measures 55.9 cm in length, 7.1 cm in height, and 9.5 cm in depth. It easily slips into a TV stand niche or under a 55‑inch screen. Its matte polymer chassis (black or white) limits light reflections coming from the screen. The honeycomb front grille reprises the aesthetic codes of other Sonos products.
On the audio side, the Ray features four class D digital amplifiers powering two central tweeters and two mid‑bass drivers. A bass‑reflex system completes the package. All transducers are front‑firing, so the Ray can be built into a piece of furniture without any loss of sound quality, whereas other bars that emit to the sides would lose soundstage width.
Connection to the TV is via an optical cable (included). The Ray decodes stereo PCM, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS Digital Surround, but does not handle Dolby Atmos. An integrated infrared receiver allows the TV remote to be used for volume control. Voice enhancement improves dialogue intelligibility; night mode reduces dynamic range for late‑night sessions.
Two surround speakers without microphones
The Era 100 SL share the acoustic architecture of the Era 100 with one notable difference: the complete absence of microphones. No voice control, therefore, but also a lower price and peace of mind for those who prefer to avoid connected mics at home. The suffix “SL” (Speechless) follows the logic already applied to the previous One SL.
Each speaker contains three class D amplifiers, two tweeters angled 90 degrees from each other to create stereo separation, and one mid‑woofer. The format remains compact: 18.2 cm high, 12 cm wide, 13 cm deep, weighing 1.95 kg. The matte finish visually matches the Ray and the Sub Mini.
In a surround configuration, the Era 100 SL are placed behind the listening area, about three meters from the seated position, slightly elevated if possible. They receive the left and right surround channels via Wi‑Fi 6 (2.4 or 5 GHz), with no cable to the soundbar. Bluetooth 5.3 and AirPlay 2 remain available for standalone use.
Without a built‑in microphone, Trueplay calibration requires an iPhone or iPad: the app uses the phone’s mic to analyze the room acoustics and adjust the EQ.
A cylindrical subwoofer that digs deep
The Sub Mini adopts a cylindrical design, 30.5 cm high and 23 cm in diameter. Its shape sets it apart from traditional subwoofers and lets it slide under a desk, next to a sofa, or into a discreet corner. The 6.35 kg weight remains reasonable.
Inside, two 15 cm woofers face each other in a so‑called “force‑cancelling” configuration: the movements of the cones cancel each other mechanically, which reduces unwanted vibrations transmitted to the floor or furniture. A sealed acoustic enclosure limits distortion. Sonos claims a frequency response extending down to 25 Hz, a low figure for a subwoofer of this size.
Connection to the rest of the system is via 5 GHz Wi‑Fi. An Ethernet port allows a wired connection if needed. EQ between the Sub Mini and the other components is performed automatically during pairing; bass level remains manually adjustable in the app.
Assembling the 5.1 system in the app
The four components are configured in the Sonos app (iOS or Android). The Ray is first connected to the TV via optical cable. Next comes the Sub Mini, which is associated with the Ray in the same virtual “room.” The two Era 100 SL are then added as left and right surround speakers: this step is called “bonding” in Sonos terminology. A simple “grouping” of rooms would not produce true surround but a slight time delay.
Once the system is assembled, the front channels (left, center, right) are handled by the Ray, the surround channels by the Era 100 SL, and low frequencies (LFE channel) by the Sub Mini. Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS decoding takes advantage of this five‑channel plus one bass‑channel distribution.
Trueplay calibration optimizes the whole: the user moves around the room with their phone, the app records sound reflections, then adjusts the EQ of each speaker. This process takes about three minutes and significantly improves performance in rooms with difficult acoustics (glass walls, tiled floors, high ceilings).
Music and multiroom
Beyond movies and series, the pack works like a conventional audio system. All four components play music together from Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal or any other compatible service. AirPlay 2 allows sound to be sent from an iPhone, iPad or Mac. Bluetooth 5.3 on the Era 100 SL enables direct playback from any paired device.
The Sonos app offers a “Surround Audio” setting for music: in “Full” mode, the Era 100 SL actively contribute to playback; in “Ambient” mode, they produce a more discreet background. The Sub Mini adds weight to bass‑heavy tracks, particularly in electronic music or hip‑hop.
The system can be integrated into an existing multiroom installation. The Ray and its associated speakers form a single zone, but sound can be sent simultaneously to other Sonos products in other rooms.
Audio formats and connectivity
The Ray accepts only a digital optical input. Recent TVs generally provide this output, often labeled “Digital Audio Out” or “Optical Out.” Models equipped solely with HDMI eARC outputs and no optical out will require an audio extractor, which complicates installation.
Dolby Atmos is not supported: Atmos tracks will be downgraded to Dolby Digital 5.1. For native Atmos playback, Sonos offers the Arc and Beam (Gen 2) soundbars, which support HDMI eARC.
The Era 100 SL feature a USB‑C port on the back. An optional adapter (Sonos Line‑In Adapter) allows you to connect a turntable or another analog device via a 3.5 mm jack cable. A second adapter (Sonos Combo Adapter) adds an Ethernet port for a wired connection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use a single Era 100 SL as a surround speaker?
No. Sonos requires two identical speakers for surround. A single Era 100 SL can join the system as a separate room, but it will not receive surround channels and will have a slight audio delay compared to the soundbar.
Does the pack work with a TV that has no optical output?
Not directly. If the TV only offers an HDMI ARC or eARC output, an HDMI‑to‑optical audio extractor will be needed to connect the Ray. This situation remains rare on models sold since 2015.
Does Trueplay work on Android?
Partially. On speakers equipped with microphones (such as the standard Era 100), Trueplay Quick Tuning uses the built‑in mics and works on Android. On the Era 100 SL, which have no mics, only the full version of Trueplay is available, and it requires an iPhone or iPad.
Can you add a second Sub Mini for more bass?
No. The Sub Mini cannot be doubled. For this feature, Sonos offers the Sub (Gen 3), which is more powerful and can be paired with a second unit in a dual‑sub configuration.
Are the Era 100 SL moisture‑resistant?
Yes, to a certain extent. Sonos describes them as moisture‑resistant, allowing installation in a bathroom or kitchen. However, they are not waterproof and should not be exposed directly to water.
Can you listen to music on the Era 100 SL without turning on the TV?
Yes. The Sonos app lets you play music through the entire system (Ray + Era 100 SL + Sub Mini) independently of the TV. The Ray then operates like a standard wireless speaker.
Can Era 100 and Era 100 SL work together in surround?
Yes. Both models share the same acoustic architecture and are compatible with each other. One Era 100 on the left and one Era 100 SL on the right (or the other way around) will form a working surround pair.
