TCL 65C7L
Overview
Eight generations of Mini LED backlighting have allowed TCL to refine its formula: more dimming zones and more light, with fewer halos. The 65C7L applies this latest evolution to a 164 cm diagonal, with a panel capable of reaching 3,000 nits spread across 1,152 independent zones. Contrast benefits, color reproduction expands, and gamers get equipment that rises to the occasion.
Mini LED backlighting moves to the eighth generation
TCL calls its technology SQD Mini LED, for Super Quantum Dot. The principle: a large number of small diodes grouped into zones that the TV switches on or off independently. On the 65-inch version, this segmentation reaches 1,152 zones, each capable of turning off completely in dark scenes or pushing up to 3,000 nits on a metallic reflection or a summer sky.
This density directly serves contrast. The more zones there are, the sharper the boundary between a lit area and a black part of the image remains. The technique still has its limits: around a very bright object set against a black background (movie credits, a star, a subtitle), a slight halo may remain. This is the accepted compromise of Mini LED compared with OLED, and TCL reduces it with condensed micro-lenses and a tighter optical distance (Micro-OD) that bring the light closer to each diode.
On the color side, the panel claims 100% coverage of the BT.2020 space, the widest reference used today for cinema and HDR content. The Super Quantum Dots, nanocrystals that convert the blue light from the diodes into very pure reds and greens, explain this range. The signal is encoded in 10 bits (native 8 bits supplemented by FRC), enough to limit banding in skies and shadows.
The HVA 2.0 Pro panel facing ambient light
The panel comes from CSOT, TCL’s display division, in its HVA 2.0 Pro version. Two strengths stand out for daytime use. First, an anti-reflective treatment that reduces reflections from windows and lamps, where many glossy panels show the reflection of the living room. Second, a viewing angle rated at 178°, which preserves color and contrast accuracy when looking at the screen from an angle, from the armchair next to it rather than straight on.
The VA type from which this panel is derived prioritizes high native contrast, at the cost of viewing angles historically less good than on an IPS panel. The wide-angle treatment of the 2.0 Pro corrects part of this flaw, without matching the perfect stability of an OLED panel. In return, brightness remains beyond OLED’s reach, and the issue of permanent burn-in does not arise.
Image processing and HDR compatibility
The in-house processor, called TSR AiPQ, handles the upscaling of lower-definition sources to the panel’s 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, and adjusts brightness and colors frame by frame. Motion compensation (MEMC) running at 120 Hz smooths tracking shots and fast pans, useful for sports and action movies.
The 65C7L supports the main HDR formats on the market: HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision in its IQ variant, which adapts rendering to the room’s light via a sensor. IMAX Enhanced certification completes the package for compatible content. Seven picture modes cover everyday uses: Filmmaker Mode disables unnecessary processing to respect the original grading, Game mode reduces latency, and the Cinema, Sport, PC, and Standard profiles adjust the rest.
A favorable ground for video games
This is probably the area where the 65C7L stands out the most in its category. The panel displays natively at 144 Hz in 4K, above the usual 120 Hz, and VRR (variable refresh rate) covers a range of 48 to 288 Hz to eliminate screen tearing. This 288 Hz figure is only accessible at reduced definition (1080p), however, via the Game Accelerator function: in 4K, the limit remains 144 Hz, which is more than enough for current consoles.
The gaming equipment is comprehensive: AMD FreeSync Premium Pro compatibility, support for Dolby Vision in gaming, a Game Master menu to adjust settings on the fly, and HDMI 2.1 inputs ready for the functions of recent consoles. Low latency and high frequency benefit PC gaming just as much as long console sessions.
Sound tuned by Bang & Olufsen
Audio remains entrusted to the Danish manufacturer Bang & Olufsen, which handles the tuning of the integrated system, a 2.2-channel configuration combining two speakers and two bass drivers. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are supported for overhead and three-dimensional sound reproduction.
The 65C7L is among the first TVs to natively support Dolby Atmos FlexConnect. This function wirelessly connects additional speakers that the TV automatically places in the sound field, whatever their position in the room. At this stage, FlexConnect works with TCL’s compatible wireless speakers (Z100 range, supplemented by a Z100 SW subwoofer), a point to keep in mind before considering a sound expansion.
Google TV and connection options
The Google TV system controls everything: familiar interface, wide catalog of streaming applications, centralized recommendations, and Google Assistant with hands-free voice control. AirPlay 2 compatibility enables streaming from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, a useful addition in an Apple-equipped household.
On the connector and wireless connection side, the TV includes Bluetooth 5.4 (recent and energy-efficient), HDMI CEC for controlling connected devices from a single remote, and the HDMI 2.1 inputs already mentioned. One downside concerns Wi-Fi, limited here to the Wi-Fi 5 standard: it is sufficient for 4K streaming but remains behind the Wi-Fi 6 found on other recent models, with no real consequence if the TV is connected via Ethernet.
Format, adjustable stand, and wall mounting
The design reprises TCL’s premium thin line and almost non-existent bezel (“Virtually ZeroBorder”). Placed on its central stand, the 65C7L measures 1,444 mm wide by 896 mm high and weighs 19.9 kg. A practical detail: this stand adjusts to two heights to slide a soundbar under the screen without masking the bottom of the image.
For wall installation, the TV adopts a 300 x 300 mm VESA standard, compatible with most mounts on the market. Removed from its stand, the chassis is only 56 mm thick and weighs 18 kg.

Frequently Asked Questions
What screen sizes does the C7L series offer?
The range comes in 55, 65, 75, 85, and 98 inches, all using the same eighth-generation SQD Mini LED technology. The number of dimming zones and peak brightness increase with screen size: the 55-inch version starts at 800 zones and 2,700 nits, while the 65-inch and larger models reach 3,000 nits.
What distinguishes the 65C7L from the 2025 65C7K?
The move to the eighth-generation SQD Mini LED brings more local dimming zones, higher peak brightness, and the new HVA 2.0 Pro panel with anti-reflective treatment and a wide viewing angle. The rest of the features (Google TV, Bang & Olufsen audio, 144 Hz gaming) remain in line with the previous model.
How many HDMI 2.1 inputs does the television offer?
The 65C7L has a total of four HDMI inputs, including two that meet the 2.1 standard and can handle 144 Hz. These are the two ports to reserve for a recent console or a high-end graphics card; the other two are suitable for a player, a set-top box, or a soundbar.
What cabinet width should be allowed for to install it?
The central stand rests on a footprint of about 386 x 369 mm, so the TV fits on a piece of furniture noticeably narrower than its 144 cm width, provided it is centered. Above all, make sure the surface can easily support the 19.9 kg of the unit mounted on its stand.
Can it be used as a PC monitor?
Yes, a PC mode is provided and the 144 Hz panel is well suited to PC gaming. 144 Hz is available in 4K via an HDMI 2.1 input; 288 Hz, meanwhile, is only available in 1080p.
Do you need a subscription to use Google TV?
The operating system and its app store are free, as are a number of channels and services available at no cost. Paid platforms (Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, and others) keep their own subscription, independent of the television.
